As part of their Seaside topic, P3 visited Western Ferries to learn about how these big boats work, and visited the beach.
Lots of us have been on Western Ferries to go ‘across the water’, but we don’t normally see the huge engines and all the machinery in the engine room at the bottom of the boat, or the control room where the captain sits right up at the top! The Sunshine Room Nurture Group at Parklands School held a special reunion for all the pupils past and present to celebrate receiving The Marjorie Boxall Quality Mark Award from the Nurture Group Network. The reunion allowed Adele and Fiona, the nurture group staff to find out how the pupils have been getting on since completing their time at Parklands. There was also time for fun and games and also a special healthy picnic.
Over the past three weeks, we have been meeting each Friday morning at Scabby Knowe, near to Kirn School for Outdoor Learning with some of our parents and also some of the Childcare students from Dunoon Grammar School. Each week we planned what we would do when we arrived next time.
Engineering was big on the agenda at St. Joseph’s this year with Mrs McLean leading developments in Technologies throughout the school. The children loved the creative aspect of engineering and were enthralled by the visits of many parents who are engineers giving presentations to the children about their jobs. Mrs McLean then took on the challenge of affording every pupil in the school the opportunity to apply for the STEM leadership award.
Primary 1 and Primary 2/1 have been reading ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’. They had to make a model lighthouse and gather their own materials – Pringle tube, stones and driftwood. They spent an afternoon making beautiful lighthouses. Zena Coffield, Trust Manager of South Kintyre Development Trust kindly judged the lighthouses. There were eight winners and they each received a ‘Lighthouse Keeper’ story book. The winning lighthouses are on display in Zena’s shop window.
The pupils in Primary 1, 2 and 3 at Rothesay Primary are football fanatics after six weeks of training and skills development through the SFA and the Tesco Bank Football Challenge. Martin Rae was very pleased with how the boys and girls worked across the sessions and the support he had from all the staff. Rothesay Primary thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and would like to thank Martin for organising a local Festival of Football for us as a finale to the whole experience. Six lucky players also had their footballing dreams come true when they got surprise tickets to the Scottish Cup Final!
Minard held their annual Duck Derby on Friday the 29th. Thankfully the weather held while the races were on. There were 17 races with 20 ducks per race. The winners of each race then took part in the grand final! The prize, lunch for two at the George Hotel, was won by Heather Miller and the runner-up was Adam Barclay. He won a £30 voucher for Dewars store in Inveraray.
Furnace children joined them for the afternoon.

Primary 6/7 at Rothesay Primary School have been working on a top secret challenge over the past few weeks. They have been receiving challenges and tasks from a secret organisation called MSB – Making Scotland Better. These tasks were to encourage the class to learn about elections and Scottish Parliament, to work with the local community to identify areas of Bute they wished to improve or change and to set up political parties to get these changes put in place.
There were celebrations today as Parklands School were presented with the prestigious ‘ The award is in recognition of good practice within nurture classes, awarded by the Nurture Group Network. Parklands School is the first school in Argyll and Bute to receive this accolade and joins only another 100 schools in the UK to be accredited with the award.

The Atlantic Islands Centre on the Isle of Luing was open to visitors for the first time on Monday 25th May. Ukulele Luing – all the pupils from Luing Primary School – visited the centre and held a rehearsal (much to the delight of other visitors) of their performance for the official opening ceremony on 13th June. The children then had a wonderful time exploring the centre and were thrilled to recognise many friends and relatives in the interesting display by Luing Historical Society.
The pupils from The Sunshine Room Social Skills Group had a fantastic expedition to Inchcailloch Island, Loch Lomond to hunt for trolls. The boys and girl met with Fiona, the park ranger to look for signs of trolls on the island, while searching for trolls Fiona told them lots about the other animals, birds, insects, plants and flowers that live on the island. The group also had time for some toasted marshmallows on a camp fire (a trolls favourite treat) before playing some magical games on the beach.

Last term, one of the Golf professionals from Helensburgh Golf Club, Matt Burt, gave golf lessons to P6/5 children at Garelochhead Primary School. This course was part of the Active Schools initiative using amenities in the area to get children more involved in sport. On Good Friday, five of the children who took part in the lessons went to Helensburgh Golf Club to participate in a fun golf competition against some other local schools. They had to show off the skills they had learned by scoring points while putting, chipping and hitting golf balls at targets.

Last term, as part of a whole-school enterprise overarching theme, Primary 7s at Park decided to enter the Blythswood Challenge, for the second year running. This enterprise challenge gives a £20 starter fund and 4 weeks to make it grow. The class decided to organise fundraising activities and settled on a Cutest Pet Competition, a Parent/Child Netball Tournament, Lunchtime Challenges, a Sponsored ‘Stay Awake’ and they also sold items on eBay. In total, these activities raised a staggering £1067.15!

P7 pupils at Dalintober have taken on the roles of Young Leaders to develop and lead a wide range of Lunchtime Clubs for all other classes in the school. The clubs are Football Skills, Dance, Space Activities, Chess, Cartoon Drawings and an Art Club. At the Technology Showcase event at Dunoon Grammar School on Saturday 23rd May, pupils from Dunoon Primary School showcased a new powerful coding game called Project Spark. Using this software, children are able to build and play on their own worlds, stories and games.

Cardross Primary held their annual sports day yesterday. After the tradition races, Commander Riches OBE from HMNB Clyde cut the ribbon and opened the new school sports courts.
The courts were funded by a successful community covenant bid and have been named after naval ships, boats and colleges that are significant to our armed forces pupils.

Primary 6 and Primary 7 were treated to learning about the bass guitar from a former Dunoon Primary pupil Phillip Stewart! Phillip has been busy studying for an Honours Degree in Professional Musicianship at the British & Irish Modern Music Institute.
Phillip explained to the class how the bass guitar is built and the importance of a bass guitar in a band. He also told the class how he began his musical journey. Some were surprised to hear that it actually began in Dunoon Primary School playing the chanter with Mr Campbell!

A great day was had by all recently when representatives of St. Joseph’s Pupil Council and Staff attended the opening ceremony of a new housing development in Helensburgh.
Last year the children of the school took part in a ‘Name the Development’ competition. Linked to the local community, St. Joseph’s pupils were always keen to take part – and to our delight, the winning entry came from a pupil at St. Joseph’s!

Primary 1 and Primary 3/2 at Garelochhead primary have been looking after butterflies. They watched them grow from very tiny caterpillars, to huge big ones, before they turned into chrysalises. The butterflies took their time turning into butterflies and then they were set free. Primary 3/2 collected lots of natural things from the garden to make the butterflies at home in their habitat. The classes were very excited to see that the butterflies liked to eat fruit. Both classes enjoyed exploring the life cycle through observations of the real thing.
