Christmas is arriving in P4B

We are getting very excited in P4B and now only have a week to go. In Maths this week we did an assessment on Subtraction to finish off our block on this and we’ve gone onto multiplication. We all seem to love learning our tables and have enjoyed playing games to revise them and learn new ones. We now have a tables booklet which we’re enjoying working on but want to fill the whole book!! I’ve reminded them it’s to be done gradually.
In writing we have written another explanation text and had the choice of explaining the life cycle of a frog or a moth. We all did very well and also added a diagram to reinforce our explanation.
We used oil pastels for our Christmas cards and are looking forward to bringing them home in this next week.
Our PowerPoint presentations on volcanoes have begun and have been brilliant so far. Looking forward to the rest next week.
We really enjoyed watching P1 and 2 performing their Nativity songs on Friday and are only sorry we missed the dress rehearsal in the church due to the weather. They were brilliant with fantastic dance moves. Well done P1 and P2.
So we are looking forward to our last week. Our Christmas Party is on Tuesday so if the children bring their party outfits in a bag to change into for the afternoon.
Love from P4B and Mrs.Burton

Good Friends in P3A

We are still working away in P3A, trying to keep as much normality as possible in these last two weeks before Christmas.   We have been continuing our learning of column addition, focusing on carrying this week.  To begin with we all sat together and worked through some addition problems, helping each other if we got a little stuck.  We have really enjoyed the challenge of these sums and by the end of the week we all got it.

‘Kindness’ was the theme for both our health and our writing lessons.  We watched the animation – Giraffes Can’t Dance and then went into groups to discuss how the animals reacted to Gerald, how Gerald felt, what advice we would give to the animals and possible solutions to make Gerald feel better about himself.   We then worked individually to draw a picture of ourselves and Gerald dancing, we then wrote some sentences of encouragement for Gerald.  The encouragement P3A gave him was fantastic!  For writing we wrote a ‘Recipe for a Good Friend’. On Tuesday we wrote grafitti walls of words about what qualities we look for in a friend. We used these words to make our own word banks. On Wednesday, we wrote our recipes, choosing the qualities we like most as our ingredients – almost as though we were baking a gingerbread friend. For the method we used ‘bossy verbs’ to give instructions. I’ve put a couple below so you can see what they’re like. They’re such lovely recipes and the children know what positive traits our friends should have.

We worked in groups to paint large pictures to decorate the school hall for the Carols Around the Tree event next week.  Each group could decide to paint any Christmas image they wanted – but they all had to agree on what it was, there was some compromising to be done but we got there and the pictures are looking really good.

On Wednesday, Mrs Kennedy’s neice came to visit. She lives in Saudi Arabia and she showed us a little film she made about her life there. We asked her lots of questions about living in a different country. She also taught us some Arabic. P3A were very welcoming, polite and kind and although she was pretty nervous she had a lovely afternoon and thought our school was great 🙂

I can’t believe it’s just a week until the holidays! We’re looking forward to our last week in school, the children’s excitement, although loud 😉 is lovely and we get carried along with it.

Have a good weekend, P3A and Mrs Kennedy

Primary 5/6 week ending 13.12.1.9

Maths-

This week we have been learning to use the grid method in times tables to multiply two digit numbers by two digit numbers.  On Monday we did tessellation. After revising which 2d shapes tiled , we used a square or rectangle to then create our own patterns by cut out shapes and sticking then to the opposite side. They worked really well.

On Thursday afternoon we had a visitor called Jody who did Ninja Maths. This involved doing tricks using numbers. He was a real Magician! We hope to use some of the tricks that we were taught with people at home!

Writing-

We were learning about apostrophes in contractions. We also had to correct sentences with apostrophes. Can’t = can not etc

Comprehension-

We were learning about inferring. We looked at a Christmas story called the Mystery Present to do this.

Science

We were learning about electricity and we were predicting whether or not ever day items were conductors. We set up an investigation to find out.

ART-

We were using oil pastels, black pencils and paper to create a seasonal calendar. They will be home soon!

PE-

For PE we continued Scottish dancing and were practising the Canadian Barn dance, the Grand Old Duke of York, the Gay Gordon and the Dashing White Sergeant.

Music-

Some of the P5’s went to the day-care centre in Linlithgow to sing to elderly folks. With Ms Bain we are continuing to learn to play the recorder.

Primary 6 visited the Scottish Parliament on Monday and got to hold artefacts and see round the building. We ad a great visit and learned a lot.

Today we got to hear the infant nativity songs and see their dances . We thought they were amazing.

Sorry we have no photos this week.

Busy, busy, busy P7a

A very busy few weeks in P7a and we are finally catching up on the blog.

We have been having Christmas songs rehearsals with the Nursery, we will be joining them on Monday afternoon when Linlithgow Day Care visit us.

For our Christmas Singalong we will be singing Feliz  Navidad, please join us in the hall  on Friday morning, 9.40am, if you can.

Roger, from Scottish Opera came to see us yesterday in preparation for our technical rehearsal next month. P6 and P7 have been working very hard on learning these songs and Roger said we were superb!

Our F1 challenge work is going well, we have designed our logos, tried out TinkerCad and started to finalise our portfolios. AB-S’s dad is going to visit in January to talk about being a racing driver.

Our Christmas Party is on Thursday from 1pm-3pm. We can bring party clothes with us to change into at lunch time. We are also allowed to wear Christmas Jumpers all next week ( we do need to wear school uniform as well though!)

Instead of presents from Mrs Newton this year we have asked her to donate some toys to Forth FM’s Mission Christmas appeal. We all think it is better to give to those who may not get anything from Christmas.

Have a lovely weekend, 5 school days until the holidays 🙂

Lights, Camel, Action! (P2B)

This week we performed our nativity ‘Lights, Camel, Action!’ to our families and friends. We went down to St. Michael’s Church on Tuesday for our dress rehearsal in the morning and then we had our first performance in the afternoon. On Wednesday night we had our final performance. Everyone was incredibly proud of us. Our nativity was amazing and it was a huge production for such little people!

To celebrate the success of our nativity, we had a party on Thursday afternoon. We had some party food, listened to music, played party games and watched a film with popcorn.  Miss Harrison said that it was very well deserved.

In Numeracy this week we have been learning to find different ways to make 20. We have also been revising all of our number facts to 20 and we have been learning to add three numbers. When adding three numbers, we added the first two numbers, kept that answer in our heads and then added on the third number. Some of us were also learning to add numbers to 100.

In Literacy this week we have been revising our common words. We have been creating our own sentences containing some of our common words, playing common word board games, making our common words with play dough and playing common word games on our Promethean board.

In our Short Read lesson this week, Miss Harrison read us a very funny story! On Wednesday afternoon, we listened to the story, ‘The Dinosaur That Pooped Christmas’! We explored the rhyming words in the story and answered questions about the text. Afterwards, Miss Harrison put some parts of the story on the Promethean board but there were some words missing! We had to work out what words should go in the empty spaces and when we were finished, we read over the text to make sure that it made sense.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

Christmas has arrived in P1B!

Wow, what a fun-filled Christmasy time we are having in P1b! Christmas fayre, Nativity, parties…
We’ve even found time to finish learning all our initial sounds a-z. No new sounds next week, use homework time to revise all of the initial sounds and common words learned, focusing on the ones children are less confident with. It’s important we know all our initial sounds so we can move on to new sounds in January.
In Numeracy we have been working on addition facts to 10 (number bonds). We are getting good at recognising switchers, eg, 8+2 and 2+8. It’s OK not to know number bonds off by heart by now, it’s more important to learn strategies to solve addition sums, such as counting on fingers, counting out loud or using concrete materials. We all learn differently, we will find strategies that work for us.
We were all stars in our Nativity and should be very proud of ourselves for performing on the stage in the church 🌟🐪
We had great fun at our Nativity party this afternoon, we played party games with P1a, had juice and treats and watched Nativity 3.
We’ve been so busy Mrs Bell has forgotten to take photos… so here are some festive photos from our Nativity party to make up for it!

Christmas party on Monday afternoon, remember to bring your party clothes!

 Have a lovely weekend… 13 sleeps…

Love P1B and Mrs Bell x

Lights, P2A, Action!

What an extra busy week we have had in P2A. It has flown by, must have been all the singing and dancing we have done!

Look below at what we have been doing in our play based learning…

This week we showed our Nativity: ‘Lights, Camel, Action’ twice in one week. The church was such a special place to perform in. We acted, danced and sung our hearts out. We loved wearing all our costumes, it got us into character! Miss Muir was very proud of us all and thought we were all stars. Thank you to everyone who came and for being so kind with your donations at the end of the performances. You were so kind in fact that we did get our special party! We played lots of fun games and had some food as well. Even though we were Nativity mad in P2A we were still learning as much as ever.

In Literacy, we have been revising our P2 common words. We were able to create some fantastic festive sentences, played common word board games in pairs and used play dough to make our words. Miss Muir noticed how kind we were when playing the board games. We were taking turns and helping each other out if we weren’t sure about a word. We could even spot common words in festive sentences on the board.

In Numeracy and Mathematics we have been recalling our number facts for 20 and adding 3 numbers (2 digits and 1 digit numbers) up to 20. Some of us have even been challenged to solve number facts up to 100 and adding 3 numbers up to 100 as well! To help us with adding 3 numbers we played a game called ‘Dice Addition’. This is where we rolled three dice, wrote the sum on a whiteboard then solved it by ourselves or with a partner. We were even giving each other clues as to what the answer could be. We enjoyed it so much that we were filling our whiteboards full of calculations! Miss Muir couldn’t believe how many we had solved. We were very proud of our work so we showed the class.

We have had a fun week this week but are definitely needing a well-earned rest. We hope you have a relaxing weekend and see you next week ready for a busy last week of term.

P.S. Please remember party clothes for Monday!

P2A and Miss Muir 🙂

P1a’s Christmas Fun

P1a have been very busy over the last few weeks. We have now learnt all of our initial sounds from a-z. Mrs Gordon is very impressed with how well we have been able to write, read and say them all. We have also learnt a few more common words was, no, saw, want and no. We now have 12 common words on our word wall. In writing we wrote about what we would do with a stickman, that was a lot of fun.

In numeracy we continued to work on our addition to 10. We have enjoyed doing addition problems in our number talks. This week the main focus has been on number bonds to 10 (all the different ways you can make 10). We are really good at finding switchers eg 2+8=10 and 8+2=10. Here you can see us busily adding using blocks, number lines and our fingers.

Christmas fun has been had by us all. We loved the Christmas Fayre last week, and here we are enjoying our Christmas dinner! Christmas party on Monday!

We were superstars in our nativity “Lights, Camel, Action” this week. As a treat from your very generous donations we got to have a party today! We played party games like pass the parcel and Christmas corners, and we had lovely snacks. We also watched a Christmas movie with popcorn. What fun!

Have a wonderful weekend, and don’t forget we need our party clothes to change into on Monday afternoon for our Christmas party.
