Food technology – Short bread Elephants / Easter Egg

Ingredients

  • 200g/7oz unsalted butter, at room temperature, cut into small cubes
  • 100g/3½oz sugar, plus extra for sprinkling
  • 300g/10½oz plain flour, sifted, plus extra for dusting

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 160C/140C Fan/Gas 3 and line a baking tray with baking paper.
  2. Mix together the butter and sugar, either by hand or using an electric hand whisk, until pale and smooth. Gently mix in the flour until completely incorporated (try not to work the flour too much or the biscuits will not be so crumbly). Using your hands, squeeze the mixture together into a ball of dough. (See tip for additional fillings)

Gently roll the dough out to about 5mm/¼in thick (dust the work surface with a little flour if the dough sticks). Cut into shape using a biscuit cutter. If you have an elephant cutter shape you are lucky!!! 😉

3. Or you can make Easter Egg shapes. Use your imagination! Be creative.

4. Transfer the biscuits onto the baking tray and chill in the fridge for 15 minutes to rest. (See tip for alternative method)

5. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until pale golden-brown.

Paint the donuts cut from recycled cardboard. Use glitter, piece of card, cut magazines, seeds, stickers… Use your imagination to make different “flavours” and “topics”. Make them nice and yammy! “Sell” them to your family in the house.

Remember to take part at tidying up time, you know the song.

Outdoor learning – Pam thought it would be a good idea to start a “Going on a bear hunt” walk.  Check Gina’s post about the bear hunt.  How many bears will you see when you go for a walk today?  Do you know … I saw a bear at my window, have a look .

HWB – You know how important it is to wash your hands. Let’s find out, how germs spread, and why it is important to wash hands with soap?

For this activity, you will need the following:

  • Glitter
  • Access to a sink
  • Soap and water
  • Optional: lotion
  • Optional: sheet of white paper

Ask your child to use water or lotion to get their hands damp. Note that the hands should be damp but not soaking wet.

Then sprinkle a healthy amount of glitter onto your child’s palms and have your child rub their palms together. Explain that the glitter represents germs, and your child’s hands are now covered in germs.

Ask your son to give a handshake to a person next to him/her.

(If you don’t have a second person to pass the “germs” on to you, your child can also just place their palms onto a white sheet of paper and observe how many “germs” are left behind when they remove their hands.)

Now look at the other person hands and see how they are now covered in “germs” as well.

Then ask your kid to go into the bathroom and wash their hands with water only (no soap).

Despite rinsing well, your kid still have some “germs” on his hands. He/she will learn that washing with water alone doesn’t get hands very clean.

Then ask to wash their hands again, but this time to use soap.

Can you see how easily germs can spread from person to person, and why washing our hands with soap is so important? Washing with water alone just doesn’t do the job! Only by washing with soap was it easy to get all the “germs” off their hands.

Literacy – Try to find in your house between 2 – 10 things that start with letter “M”. Ask mum or dad to hide 3 of those objects and go find them. Parents can give you some clues. Use the code “hot” if they are getting close to the object, “cold” if they are moving away from the object. You can make teams/pairs to have extra help.

Art – Make a Garden Art Box

The garden is full of inspiration for budding artists.

Find an empty shoebox. Cut out plant pictures from old seed and plant catalogues I(if you don’t have any you can draw some or even paint directly on the box. Feel free to use your imagination) and then glue them to the box for decoration.  Cover the box with clear contact paper.  Although it won’t be waterproof, this will make it more durable.

Science – Do you know which solids dissolve in water? Here you have a fun and easy experiment that you can make at home.

You will need:

  • Water (hot and cold)
  • Transparent containers
  • Substances to try and dissolve (sugar, salt, sand, pepper, coffee…)

Method:

  1. Add a tea spoon of whichever you are testing to a glass of cold water and a glass of hot water, stir and observe the difference.
  2. Look to see if the solids dissolves in the cold water and hot water and if one is better than the other.
  3. Can you take pictures to record your observation?

Image result for dissolving experiments ks1

The Science bit: Things like salt, sugar,= and coffee dissolve in water. They are soluble. They usually dissolve better and faster in hot water. Pepper and sand are insoluble. They do not dissolve even in the hot water.

HWB  – can you name and find some parts of your body. You can do it pointing to your body or you can have fun and sing and dance with “head, shoulders, knees and toes” so familiar for you and I know you love it.

If you would like to explore a little bit further why not try it in Spanish. Have fun J

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlYpkpAB8k8

I hope you have a lovely day. Keep safe, stay happy!!! Always remember, I am right here, just on the other side of the screen! 😀

24th March – Afternoon

Hi everyone,
I hope you are all well and safe.
For this afternoon, regarding to your timetable, here some activities that you can make:

Gardening – Have fun making a mud pie in your garden

They feel sticky in your fingers when wet and clump to the point that you can’t see an individual particle without a microscope.
All you have to do is take a small clump of soil and add water until it makes a moist ball. Begin to shape the ball into a pie. You can extend your imagination and “decorate” your pie as you wish (using little stones, sticks, plants, flowers….)
If you have sand you can explore the different textures, colours and smells. Compare how different “pies” you can make.
For some children, you can show that soil properties can also impact how well the plants in our garden grow. Show them that plants can’t grow on the sand.
*note: if you don’t like to touch the mud with your hands use some gardening tools or toys cutlery to make it.

HWB – Watch this little video why you need to wash your hands and use this guidance to wash it properly

https://www.google.co.uk/search?source=hp&ei=wvV5XpfhMcnBlwT0upHgBg&q=how+to+wash+your+hands+for+kids&oq=how+to+wash+your+&gs_l=psy-ab.3.0.0i131j0l4j0i3j0l4.994.5696..8705…0.0..0.143.1269.16j1……0….1..gws-wiz.Vcx2Eg2hNJk&safe=active&ssui=on

Have fun and take care 🙂
