Good morning P1! Wednesday 13th May 2020

Good morning everybody!

OXFORD OWLS LOG IN: Just a quick apology and to say that the password for Oxford Owls for P1a and b is My books not My Books, if you have any problems getting logged in, let us know 😀

I hope you are having a nice week. I have been enjoying learning some Swedish on an app called duolingo – do you know where Sweden is? My brother lives there with his wife and their little baby boy, Rory. I have been very impressed with some of the pictograms you have been sending me this week – do you remember when we made a giant pictogram in our classroom with all the colourful chairs? I enjoyed that a lot!

In our learning grid this week, we encouraged you to have a think about nice, healthy breakfast choices. Here is a short video about some of the ways that you can keep healthy. You can talk about the different bits with an adult and maybe try and find out more about the bits that interest you.

There is a little challenge at the end for anyone who would like to do it, but remember these are all just suggestions, just do what you can, there’s no pressure to do everything!

We love hearing about what you are getting up to each week – we would really appreciate hearing from you each week; you can share what you have been getting up to with us, or just say a quick hello to let us know you are safe and happy, or let us know if we can support you in any way. We really love feeling connected to our classes – we miss you all so much!

Take care,

Your P1 Teachers

Good afternoon P1! Tuesday 12th May 2020.

Bonjour P1!

I hope you have had a nice start to the week. I hope that this afternoon, or whenever you have some time, you can practise a little more French, using a great website that we now have access to.

Watch this video. Can you guess what our learning focus is today?

ONZE!

Here is a little game that I like to play to practise saying French numbers out loud and in a sequence. You will need to gather your family members and stand them in a circle. You will all need to listen carefully so you are ready to play when it is your turn.

If you need more people you could even video-call someone else and keep them on a laptop screen for added tech points!

  • Stand in a circle and each person in turn calls out numbers in sequence, i.e. un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf, dix, onze.
  • You may choose to call out one number, two numbers or three numbers on your turn, but you have to continue the sequence.
  • Whoever calls out onze has to sit down.
  • The game continues until only one person is left standing!

Linguascope Numbers 1 to 10 User Guide

Now use the above guide to access linguascope, a great website to practise French vocabulary through fun games. It has recordings of all the words so you can improve your pronunciation too.

I hope you have a nice time practising your French numbers – how high can you count?

Au revoir!

Good afternoon P1! Monday 11th May 2020

Good afternoon everybody!

I hope you all had a nice weekend out in the sunshine. I was busier than normal this weekend. I had my quiz-master hat on this weekend – I wrote a quiz for all my family on Friday and then a different one for some friends on Saturday. Have you taken part in any quizzes? Maybe I should write one for children that you could do with your families – would you like that?

I also found some oil pastels hidden away when I cleaned out a cupboard, and I have been enjoying seeing your beautiful art work so much recently that it inspired me to draw a picture. I tried to use all the brightest colours, a bit like all the nice rainbows I have been seeing on my walks.

SumDog Challenge!

Usernames, passwords and the school code for SumDog were emailed out recently and lots of people have started or finished the diagnostic assessment questions (the first questions which come up automatically when you first log in) which helps set future learning at the right level of difficulty.

Please remember: these first questions/games are designed to set future questions at the correct level, so children should complete them without help (although you can read them aloud) so that they don’t end up with questions/games that are too tricky for them to work on independently!

For anyone who has completed the diagnostic questions, I have set up a challenge on SumDog to help practise measuring height, length and weight, as well as a little bit more on fractions (halves and quarters). The goal is to answer 50 questions in the challenge correctly between now and next Monday to earn 50 coins. Let us know how you get on – have fun!

Have a fabulous week and stay safe,

Take care,

Yours P1 Teachers

Good morning P1! Friday 8th May 2020

Good morning P1!

Here is a fun video to start the day off right – you can practise skip counting by 2, 5 and 10 and have a think about odd and even numbers, all while working out and following the instructions.

As we come to the end of another week of home learning, I just want to say a huge well done to all our incredible children for all your hard work these last few weeks and a big thank you to all parents/carers – you are all doing an amazing job!

One of the things that really brightens my day and makes me smile is hearing about all the great outdoorsy, creative, fun things you are doing at home and all the fab family time people are enjoying. I have heard about people camping in the garden, planting flowers and vegetables, taking on art and craft projects, cooking up a storm and inventing games/treasure hunts/quizzes for their families.

What are your plans for this weekend? If the sun stays out, we are going to take Bennie on some nice walks along an old railway track near our flat. We also have to try and give him a bath, which will be very tricky because he HATES water. Usually I end up getting more soaked than he does! Here he is this morning playing with his toys.

Have a fantastic weekend when it comes,

I miss you all very much P1B, I’m so proud of you for working and playing at home and keeping everybody safe,

Mrs Jamieson

Good afternoon P1! Thursday 7th May 2020

Good afternoon everyone!

I hope you are enjoying this lovely weather today and have been outside as much as you can. I like sitting at the window in my living room and looking out at the garden – we live in a first floor flat so we are at the perfect height to see right into a big tree where lots of little birds like to come and sit. I think I will have to start looking online to see which type of birds they are, I will let you know if I find out. Have you seen any interesting wildlife recently?

Some of you included some of the nice Spring wildlife you have seen recently in your acrostic poems. Thank you for sending us them – we were so impressed at your creativity and writing skills. Look out for them on twitter tomorrow!

This afternoon I thought I would share a short lesson about measuring length and height with you – there is an activity you could try at home now or on another day.

I hope you have fun doing exploring measure – we would love to hear about any measure related activities you get up to this week.

Take care and enjoy the sun,

Your P1 Teachers

Good morning P1! Wednesday 6th May 2020

Good morning everybody!

We hope you had a lovely long weekend. Let us know in the comments some of the nice things you did this weekend? I made some cookies (chocolate chip and almond) and they were very tasty.

I have attached this week’s learning grid and some resources that you can use to support what we are learning about. Remember – just do what you can and please don’t feel you need to print everything off, you can do these activities verbally or on paper/in your jotter if it is easier! Let us know if we can help with anything.

Home Learning week 5 P1

Phonics Sound Hunt Activity (Mrs Chisholm will be providing some more information about our phonics tomorrow morning)

Spring poem template PDF (Mrs Memuir will be providing some more information about this writing challenge later today)

Measure Challenge Cards PDF (Mrs Jamieson will be providing some further measuring activities tomorrow afternoon)

Measuring Dinosaurs (can be done on screen if you prefer not to print)

Have a lovely week and remember to keep sending us photos of all the lovely work and play that you are doing at home, we love being able to keep in touch with you.

Take care,

Your P1 Teachers 😀

Good morning P1! Friday 1st May 2020.

Good morning everyone!

Today is a special day because it is the very first day in a new month. Last month was April, can you remember which month comes next? You might have to think back to when we explored calendars or to the months of the year songs that we often sing together.

Here is one of them in case you need a clue:

Remember to check out the school twitter page today to see some of the lovely photos people have been sending us in a celebration ‘Sway’. If you sent me some photos today, thank you so much – we’ll pop them into next week’s celebration ‘Sway’ post so everyone can see your hard work!

Everybody should have a username and password for the SumDog website now, why not have a go at logging in today and explore the site a little.

An important reminder about SumDog is that the first set of games/questions are part of a diagnostic assessment tool that is used to set future learning at the correct level for your child to work at, so please only help children to read the questions, not to answer them, or it will set the level too high for them to play independently!

I hope you have a lovely weekend – remember that Monday and Tuesday are special holiday days. I wonder if anyone is planning a really fun activity for the holiday weekend? Our learning grid and activities for next week will be posted on the blog/website on Wednesday.

Take care and remember – just do what you can and make plenty of time to play!

Miss Jamieson

Good afternoon P1! Thursday 30th April 2020

Good afternoon everyone!

I hope you are having a nice day. I have a little art activity for you that I saw online and thought was nice.

Remember when we explored the visual elements in class? We talked a lot about the one called LINE. We experimented with different types of lines – wavy, straight, vertical, horizontal, broken, thick, narrow, etc.

This art activity is based on using straight lines, both vertical and horizontal, to create a tartan background; a bit like we did in Scottish Week.

Here is my tartan background – I used five colours. Can you spot all the patterns? Patterns are important when you create a tartan.

Next, we draw and colour the outline of any shape that reminds you of Scotland. I drew a thistle. Do you know why I chose this flower? Stick your drawing on top of your tartan background and HEY PRESTO, you have a lovely Scottish piece of artwork!

You could choose a different picture – like somebody doing some Scottish dancing, a stag, a highland cow, a squirrel, a Scottie dog, or something else that you think of.

Last night I was playing my violin for the first time in a while and I thought I would play a Scottish song for you to link in with our Scottish art. I hope you like it. It is called The Rowan Tree. You might have to plug your headphones in because the volume is not very high.

Take care everybody and have a great afternoon. We miss you all very much and love hearing from you. Remember to check out our school twitter tomorrow to see photos of all the fantastic work and play children in our school have been getting up to!

From your P1 Teachers!

Good morning P1! Wednesday 29th April 2020

Good morning everyone!

I hope you have had a nice start to the week. We have been hearing from lots of you all about the great things you are doing at home. Please keep sending us emails and photos and comments – we love hearing from you.

Today, or at some point when you have time, I would love it if you could do a wee activity with a grown up that I hope will remind you of how special you are.

All you have to do is look at the sheet here (I am AMAZING) and ask a grown up to read the start of each sentence to you. Your job is to tell them (or just think about it inside your head) how you could finish the sentence. You don’t need to print it or write anything down, it is just a nice chance to reflect on how unique and wonderful you all are.

We are so proud of you all; for all your super learning but also, and especially, for all the lovely things we hear that you have been doing, like helping around the house, playing with your brothers and sisters, being kind and making your families smile. You are all wonderful, never forget it!

I found a list of LOTS of fun things to do indoors for the days when the weather isn’t as nice as it has been lately – I will leave the link to it here (Fun Indoor Activities) for you to have a look at. You can try some of these if you want, but remember that you don’t have to. You might have already thought of some even better ideas yourself!

Please feel free to get in contact with us if you need help with anything at all – we are here to support you however we can.

Take care and have a lovely day,

Your P1 Teachers

Good afternoon P1! Tuesday 28th April 2020

Salut P1,

This afternoon I thought we could practise some of the French we have learned this year with our French teacher and in class. Let’s watch our French Greetings song and sing together to get us warmed up.

Bennie says SALUT everybody! Can you remember what that means?
Silly Bennie has forgotten to colour in the French flag – can you help him? What colours should he have used?

Memory Challenge!

Can you think back to what you have learned in school? See if you can tell a grown up how to say these common greetings in French. I bet they will help you look them up online if you have forgotten any.

Hi!     Good morning/day!     Good afternoon/evening!     Good night!     Good bye!     See you soon!

Check Bennie’s picture to see if you were right:

Here is a short video to help you with the pronunciation.

Did you spot a tall landmark on the laptop in the first picture? It is very famous. Here is a little information about it:

Perhaps you could research some other famous landmarks in France. If you get stuck, I have attached a PowerPoint all about France that might give you some hints!

All About France PowerPoint

Let us know in the comments how you got on if you tried this activity or if you found out anything new about somewhere nice in France.

Take care and have a lovely afternoon and evening,

Au revoir!

Home Learning Grid 27.4.20  Week 4 Resources Diamonds   Week 4 Resources Stars

Good morning Primary 1,

We hope you had a lovely weekend in the sun. Perhaps you could ask an adult to help you add a comment to this post sharing what the best part of your weekend was? My best part was trying a new recipe which turned out pretty tasty and sitting in the garden to read a great book.

Our weekly learning grid and resources can be found on the school website in the Home Learning part of the Parent Zone, but I have also attached them at the top of this post for ease. Here are some related activities that you might like to explore at some point if it fits in with your routine.

Literacy:

Visit the website www.phonicsbloom.com and explore some of the word building games to help your reading and writing. In class, we have played ‘Fishy Phonics’, ‘Odd and Bob’ and ‘Odd Sound Out’ but it is worth exploring some more of the available games and phases as there are lots of ways to challenge yourselves.

Numeracy:

This week we are focusing on fractions and on splitting whole objects into smaller parts of equal size.

Why not watch the following BBC Bitesize song about halving and quartering – https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z6bq6sg – it has a nice focus on sharing!

If you want to take this further, you could give try sharing a some objects equally between two people, or splitting them in half. Tell an adult how you can make sure that sharing is fair and see if you can explain to them why halves must always be equal parts.

STEM:

We are continuing to learn about living things and their life cycles. Here is a song that you can join in and move to, while the words talk about some features of living things: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzN299RpJHA

We are looking forward to hearing about and/or seeing photos of any visual representations of life cycles that you make this week at home. You are all so creative, I am sure you will impress us!

Thank you for sending us lots of news, photos and questions – we are enjoying hearing and seeing what you are up to. We miss you all very much.

Take care and please remember – only do what you can; you know best how to organise home learning around your commitments and schedules, so please don’t feel under pressure and let us know if we can support you in any way.

Have a wonderful week,

Your P1 Teachers

Friday 24th April 2020

Good morning everybody,

Thank you so much for all your emails, photos and comments this week. I miss you all very much and so I am really enjoying hearing from you and seeing pictures of the fabulous learning and playing you are doing at home, and I am delighted to be able to answer any questions and support you however I can.

I have seen so many examples of your hard work, as well as hearing beautiful stories about the memories you are creating at home during this difficult time; cooking together, creating family quizzes, gardening, treasure hunts, going on walks and enjoying the Spring weather and flowers.

I saw a lovely picture yesterday that I wanted to share – it shows lots of everyday activities that are not only necessary and/or fun, but that contain a great deal of opportunities to learn and develop new skills too. I imagine you probably do lots of these already, so well done!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend – have you got anything nice lined up? I am planning on making a couple of new recipes, so I will let you know after the weekend how they turned out.

Take care and have fun,

Love Mrs Jamieson

Thursday 23rd April 2020

Good afternoon P1,

I hope you have had a nice morning. Thank you for sending us so many lovely photos of you learning and playing. It is great to see the creative things you have been doing at home. Have a look at the school twitter page tomorrow to see what children in the rest of our school have been doing too.

I wonder if any of you tried an activity to practise throwing and catching. Let us know in the comments if you did. I took my little dog Bennie down to our garden at lunchtime and tried to play a throwing game with him – the only trouble is that he won’t bring anything back! Here is a little video of us playing ‘fetch’ just for fun!

Take care and have a wonderful afternoon and evening,

Your P1 Teachers

Earth Day 2020 – Climate Action

Good morning Primary One,

I hope you had a lovely day yesterday and managed to make the most of the beautiful sunshine. We have really enjoyed receiving some photos of the amazing learning and playing you have been doing at home – well done and keep up the great work!
Today is a special day – it is Earth Day 2020 and it is the 50th anniversary of this day. Earth Day is a day where we try to take some time to think about how amazing our planet is and the things that we can do to help it.
If it fits into your routine today, you could look through this Power Point with an adult and have a chat about the parts that interest you or that you would like to know more about.
The Power Point talks about the importance of recycling – I wonder if you could try to make something new out of old packaging material to give it a second life? Send us a photo or let us know in the comments what you have learned about Earth Day or what you decided to create!
Our planet is truly amazing – look at this beautiful Spring blossom near my home,. It made me smile!
Our learning grid/resources for this week are still on the LPS website and if you scroll back a little you will also find a PowerPoint with more related learning activities. We understand that everyone’s situation is different just now, so find a routine that works for your family and please don’t feel any pressure! Let us know if we can support you in any way.
Take care and have a great day,
Primary One Teachers 🙂

Ladybird Doubles to 10  Ladybird Doubles to 20

Good afternoon everyone,

We hope you have had a lovely morning and perhaps managed to get out into the sunshine to create a symmetrical picture. Send us a photo if you would like us to have a look at yours!

Did you know that the spots on a ladybird’s wings are symmetrical, though a ladybird can have an “odd” spot which actually spans both wings?

You can find out more facts about ladybirds on this website if you are interested: http://www.storybug.net/kids.html

I have attached two challenges for you to explore if it fits into your routine sometime this week – count the spots on one side of each ladybird on the sheet, tell an adult how many you think will be on the other side and see if you can work out how many spots each ladybird will have altogether.

Remember that ladybird spots are symmetrical and use what you know about doubles to help you!

Please don’t feel you need to print this sheet off – it can be a verbal activity!

Good luck 🙂
