I have already posted a number of activities that are suitable for whole families to support our Health and Wellbeing. But how do we know what works well ?
There are 5 ways identified by the NHS to support our Wellbeing, and below is a short cartoon (filmed before Lockdown!) to explain.
Hope you all enjoyed your weekend and you’re ready for another week of learning! Remember to check your packs for which activities you can do this week.
Find a set of instructions for planting a seed or a bean – try Google or this link – https://www.science-sparks.com/bean-in-a-jar/.
Read the instructions out aloud and then write them out (perhaps in your own words!).
Can you then follow the instructions and plant a seed? Remember to keep watering it! If you don’t have a seed you could maybe try a clipping from another plant you have in your garden – ask permission first of course!
(Remember to allow adobe flash player if it doesn’t work first time, any issues you can always try to find another game online to help)
Look in different rooms in your house and go on a number hunt. How many items can you find that have numbers on them? What is the largest number you can find (maybe something like a barcode?)? What is the smallest number you can find? Note these down.
IDL
Find out what the flag of Saint Patrick looks like and look at how the union flag altered when the flag of Saint Patrick was added. Write this information down in your own words as best you can.
You could then use what you have at home to recreate the Saint Patrick Flag in whichever way you like. If you can, take a photo of what you create!
I hope everyone had a great weekend and you are bright and ready for another week of home learning. There will be new packs issued this week so don’t worry if you are running out of activity sheets.
Why not start the week off with a Fischy Music assembly. Below is the link for last week (week 7) if you follow the link it will take you to week 8.
I hope you enjoyed that, sometimes singing is a great way to lift your mood if you are feeling a little blue or sluggish.
Reading
Visit Oxford Owls ebooks to access the new book for this week.
With the help of an adult read the story ‘Leek Hotpot‘. Before you start, can you make a prediction as to what you think might happen in the story? This story should help us revise the sound ‘ee‘, how many times can you spot it in the story?
You will need to use your ‘decoding‘ skills to tackle any tricky words you come across. To be successful at this remember to,
Look at the first sound
Chunk up the word -(is there a word within the word?)
Use the pictures for clues
Read around the word (miss it out, can you think of a word which might fit in and make sense?)
Once you have read the story you can have a go at both of the accompanying activities one and two, focusing on reading ee words and matching them with their rhyming partner and secondly listening for sounds within the words.
Good luck and remember you can choose an activity from the guided reading Home learning grid also.
Have a go at this online game to help with reading and writing CVC words.
Visit Topmarks.co.uk – ‘slides’ – Here you have to choose the last letter to complete the CVC word.
I have added a new game on the Home Learning section of our Educationcity class area, it’s called ‘Snug as a Bug in a Tub’ – it focuses on using the middle ‘u’ sound to complete CVC words.. have a go, can’t wait to see your scores!
Phonics
New sound /sh/ this is a green sound formed by using the flat middle section of your tongue! Have a look at your mouth in the mirror whilst you make this sound. Think about what your tongue is doing. Is it a loud or quiet sound? shhhhhhhhhh… it’s a quiet sound and stretchy sound (like our snake).
Can you think of any words which contain the /sh/ sound? Write down as many as you can think of, even look around your house for inspiration. Here is our trusty friend Geraldine to help us out if we are stuck thinking of some /sh/ words.
Here is a list of /sh/ words.
Ask an adult to read them out to you and have a go at writing them down.
Sh -e -d sh -ee- p sh- o- p sh – i -p
f -i- sh c -a- sh d -i -sh m -a -sh
If you don’t get them first time, keep practising, use the spelling grid in your home learning pack to give you some different practise ideas. For example, rainbow writing, pavement chalk writing…there are an endless amount of ideas. I’ve added a copy of the grid below for convenience.
Finally have a go at writing your own silly sentence containing as many /sh/ words as you can think of! The sillier the better! If you can’t think of one, here is mine. Have an adult read it to you and you can copy it down. Don’t forget to listen carefully and sound out all the words and of course don’t forget the capital letter, full stop and finger spaces.
The sheep had a dish from the fish shop.
Numeracy and Maths
Daily 10
Let’s continue with working on adding on ten. To warm up, here is a clip from Miss Swanson’s favourite you-tuber, Jack Hartmann. You can join in once you are feeling confident.
Here are your questions for today. I have added the 100 square below to help you out if you need it.
Today I thought we could have a making a ‘money animal’. Ask an adult to lend you any loose change they have and you can fix them into the shape of your desired animal. I really like the giraffe.
This is a great activity for getting you used to handling different coins, thinking about their size, shape, colour and of course how much they are worth! If you fancy a challenge can you add up how much your animal is? I wonder who can make the most expensiveanimal and I wonder who can make the least expensive animal?
Please email any pictures of you coin animals, I’d love to see them.
Music
I thought I would remind you all of this song from last term when we were talking about ‘Build up’s’, have you built anyone up lately? Have a think about what it means to build someone up and to tear someone down. Try and give at least one build up to someone in you household today!
Have a great day boys and girls, enjoy all your tasks and I will see you tomorrow back here for some more home learning.
Don’t forget to visit Sum Dog and Education City for lots of games added into our class areas.
Good Morning Primary 2! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Your new packs of work will be available to collect from school on Wednesday. If there are any issues with this, please let us know at wldeans-ps@westlothian.org.uk. In the meantime, here are some fun learning activities for the day!
Today, we are going to revise what we know about place value to 2 digits. Remember we have tens and ones in 2-digit numbers. Can you remember which number is which?
Watch this video to give yourself a reminder of the tens and ones in 2-digit numbers.
Can you identify the tens and ones in each of these 2-digit numbers?

Nonsense Words
I have come across an interesting picture and I need your help! There are lots of words here and I am not sure if all of them are real words. I would like your help to decide which of these words are real and which are nonsense! In your jotter, split your page in half and at the top write real and nonsense. Write each word from the picture in the correct column.
Extra Challenge – can you use a dictionary to find the meaning of the real words? If you do not have a dictionary at home, follow this link to an online dictionary: https://www.dictionary.com/
Special Activity
Your special activity today is to show us your best dance moves! Oti Mabuse and Marius Iepure have choreographed a special dance to a song from ‘The Greatest Showman’. Join in with them to learn the dance and then perform it for everyone in your house! Remember to stay hydrated when you are exercising and have a snack afterwards.
Have a great day and I will be back tomorrow with some more fun activities!
I am going to copy each day’s “Daily Plan” ( I have changed the name from “Read Me First”) document from Team’s “Files” into the blog as some of you have been having difficulties accessing it. I hope this helps. However it seems as though I can not put in some materials into the blog that I can into Teams. I don’t think that your issues have been about accessing Teams, more about downloading stuff? I don’t think I am going to show this part of the message after this week.
Spelling activity: choose a list of Fry’s words that is appropriate for yourself. Create a Word document with a table of 2 columns and 25 rows. Write your chosen 25 words in the first column. Using a dictionary, on-line or book, put a definition of the word in the second column next to it. I have created an example to support you if you are not sure how to do this. I have created a dedicated folder in “Files” for this work. Please include your name as part of the file name to differentiate it from the others. Thomas and Ethan thank you for the work you have done. Please try to do another set of more challenging words. I have also created the first in a series of “HotPotatoes” activities, generated from the spelling work Thomas, Ethan and Gemma had produced. Please try it and tell me what you think. Some of you have already tried to experiment with making your own “HotPotatoes” quizzes. Here is a link https://hotpot.uvic.ca/ to where you can download the program and here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3pMWXqeqdo is a tutorial on how to use one of the applications in it. I think we could also use it for maths
The use of Teams went really well last week, thank you. I have tidied up “Files” and, I think, made it easier to use and find things. Please let me know if you have any issues with it.
Keep your personal projects going- you still have the folder to post them into – please check out the work Thomas, Ethan and Zoey have already put in there.
Topic – Read Ethan’s “Broons” story and Thomas’s “Oor Wullie” and “Broons” stories. Challenge: can you do better? Think about interesting ways to present these stories. Please post any ideas you have so we can discuss them. What about making a film? Do you have Windows Media Player on your computer? If not please try to download and install it. Is there any other way we could film it? I have created a dedicated folder for this work in “Files” as well.
Has anyone finished their work on measure yet? If not, finish money first and then move onto measure. This will help progress your work on decimals to 3 places.
