Busy week in P5/6

What a busy week in P5/6!

We have been very busy preparing for the Christmas fayre this week! Come and see our crafts for sale this afternoon between 1pm and 3pm.

In maths we have been learning about angles, their different names and estimating their size.

In literacy we have been discovering the features of newspaper articles in preparation for creating  our own news paper article about The Titanic disaster next week.

Read, Write, Count

Primary 2 and Primary 3 had a very busy afternoon at our Read, Write, Count event! There were lots of activities to try out, such as, writing a book review, playing lots of fun numeracy games, playing on Education City on the laptops, giant snakes and ladders, enjoying reading on the bean bags, completing a word-search and playing Boggle.

All pupils also got a free bag of literacy and numeracy activities to take home to play with their parents/carers and other family members.

Thank you very much to all the parents and carers who made it along to this event, we were delighted you could join us!

P3 prepare for the Christmas Fair

Christmas Fair Week.
We have been busy all week preparing for the Christmas Fair on Friday.  We have made some posters to advertise the event.  They are on display all around the school and on some of the windows.

Reindeer Brooches

We have had fun decorating little wooden reindeer and adding some sparkle.  We have added a pin so they can be worn.  We think they look great.

 Yule Log Table Decorations

We have been working hard to create unique wooden yule log table decorations.  Every one has helped, and each yule log is different.

Christmas Tree Decorations

We have been adding sparkle to make decorations for the Christmas tree.  Our classroom is very glittery now.

We have also been doing Christmas Fair maths this week.

At the fair on Friday, we will have a guess the teddy’s birthday competition – if you guess his birthday correctly he’s yours. too.
We hope you will come and see our table at the fair.

Mindfulness by Teegan

Today Primary 6/7 tried out some mindfulness with Mrs Moyes. Teegan enjoyed it so much that it inspired her to write her own mindfulness story. This is it:

Water Fall

Close your eyes, be very still and imagine that you are standing in crystal clear water at the top of a waterfall and you are leaning over the cliff that the water fall is on and the wind is holding your body up.

Imagine the wind blowing through your hair, breathe in the mountains fresh air; in through your nose and back out of your mouth (X3) repeat in your head.

“I am calm and gentle” now open your eyes and breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth (X3)

Teegan is going to visit The Den tomorrow to read this to the children at mindfulness time, we know they will really enjoy it!

P2 Arts and Crafts

P2 have been working like little elves this week! They have been hard at work creating lovely hand made planters to sell at our Christmas Fair this Friday. We collected in lots of milk cartons and cut them in half. We then painted and decorated them with lots of sequences, glitter and stick on shapes to make these planters look beautiful! On Thursday we are going to learn all about the life cycle of a plant. We will  use compost and pot some lovely flowers into our crafty planters ready to sell. They are also recyclable which is another reason to buy them!

P3 Try Coding in ICT

This week we have started to learn about coding in ICT.  We were programming simple instructions to get the angry bird to go and get the pig.  “It was amazing.”   “It was awesome”.  Everyone was able to work at their own pace and we all had fun.

Maths
We have been learning about friendly numbers, such as 10 or 5 and we have been using them in our number talks to help us to  add 2 digit numbers.  We also learned to play a new game.

Road Safety Week
It is Road Safety Week this week, and we have been looking at the Green Cross Code and writing about how to cross the road safely.  We were sequencing instructions in the correct order.

As part of our senses topic, we have been focusing on the sense of hearing this week.  We have been on outdoor and indoor sound walks and we even managed to play sound bingo.

Christmas Fayre 1-3pm

Come to our Read, Write, Count Event!

Read, Write, Count is a new campaign to support parents of children in primaries 1 to 3 who want to take a more active role in their children’s learning.

Read, Write, Count’s website gives lots of simple ideas for working fun reading, writing and counting activities into your daily life. These are things you can do while shopping, on the way to school, at bedtime or mealtimes. You can have fun and help your child get the best start in life!

We would like to invite you to our Read, Write, Count event on Thursday 29th November

P2 parents – 1:30-2:15pm

P3 parents – 2:25-3:10pm

This will provide an opportunity for you to take part in and enjoy activities linked to the free family bag you will receive with your child and also to explore the school library.

Primary 4

Thank you to everyone who sent in teddy bears and toys for P4 to use for the Christmas Fayre. We have enough now to keep us busy and we really appreciate your help.

This week we have been continuing to work on our comparison of Scotland and Malawi. Pupils have completed a second piece of information text about elephants and we hope to build on this writing skill next week. They also drew some really effective pictures of giraffes and elephants to add to our information display. Next week we will be comparing the weather in the two countries and developing our skills in finding information from graphs.

In maths we have been improving our skills in doing column addition sums and have worked on carrying across the digits.  Pupils have been using partitioning and number lines as part of their Number Talks sessions. We have also been learning about rounding to the nearest 10 and on Monday we will extend this to rounding to the nearest 100.

Next week will be very busy preparing our goods for the Christmas Fayre which we hope will be just as successful as last years.
