This week in Primary 3

P3 are Telling the Time!

This week in Numeracy and Maths we have been focusing on Time. We have been looking at O’Clock, Half Past, Quarter Past and Quarter To. We made our own clocks and have been using these to help us. We enjoyed creating our own designs on the clocks. We have been working hard to learn our times and Mrs Hillan will be asking us our times often throughout the day. Some of us have been matching written times to the clocks and some of us have been recording times in digital and analogue.  As a class we have been using some interactive games to test our knowledge and also help us learn something new. We will continue to consolidate the times we have learned so far, as well as trying new ones next week.

“When the big hand is pointing to the 9 it means quarter to”– Ryley

“When the big hand is at 9 on analogue, on digital you would write 45 for quarter to” – Summer

“When the big hand points to the 3 and the small hand points to the 8, it is quarter past 8″– Olivia

“When the big hand goes from one number to another number that means it’s been 5 minutes” – Erin

“When the big hand gets to the 6 that means half past” – Lewis D

“When the big hand points to the 12, it is o’clock” – Shay

P3 Filming with P3/4

This week we filmed our TV adverts to encourage people to visit Glasgow. We were working with P3/4 in mixed groups. We had to create a script as well as a piece of drama. We had lots of fun and had a few laughs along the way! We gave feedback to each group as we watched and filmed. A lot of similar feedback came up for our next steps, such as projecting our voices more and not having our backs to the audience. There was also a lot of positive feedback such as good acting in our dramas, sharing good information and some of us spoke loudly and clearly.  Unfortunately we can’t upload the videos as the files are too large!

Primary 2/1 Weekly Update.

Let’s start off our blog with our learning highlights this week from the children.

Elkie – My highlight was making my Highland cow because  I loved making it.

Sai liked making his fact file about highland cows, his favourite fact was that their hair is so long it goes over their eyes, but it is there to protect them.

Jordon – I liked drawing Nessie because she goes under water.

Nathaniel- I liked learning about the sound x because it was easy to write!

Tadas – I like the daily 5 because it is easy for me!

Robyn – I liked learning all of our sounds, every Monday I look forward to seeing all the new letters for the week.

It’s been another busy week where we have been learning all about the Loch Ness Monster! We watched the Nessie cam but unfortunately didn’t catch a glimpse of her this time, why not have a look for yourselves at home!

Use this link       https://www.lochness.co.uk/livecam/

This led to a very interesting discussion about whether we thought Nessie existed or not….. Most of us are believers! We made our own Nessie to decorate our Learning Journey wall. We had to use our scissors very carefully and we came up with some amazing Nessie designs.

In writing this week we wrote postcards to Nessie, telling her all about ourselves and the things we like to do. We all wrote at least 3 sentences all by ourselves. After reading the story, Hamish the Highland Cow by Natalie Russell, we also designed and wrote our own fact files about Highland cows and created a pastel drawing using a smudging technique to create a ‘hairy’ effect!

We are still working on the topic of Time in Maths. This week we have been looking at how we measure time. We talked about seconds, minutes, hours, days and weeks. We discussed how long we thought it would take us to complete certain activities. We had a team work challenge where we had to match up activities with how long we thought they would last.

Lennon thought this was a good challenge and Erica said it was lots of fun.

We have also been discussing the seasons and which season we like the best!

Euan’s favourite season is Summer because that’s when his birthday falls.

Jordon loves Winter the best because the snow comes out.

Ethan loves Autumn  the best because you can collect all the leaves.

Kayden loves Spring because you can start to play outside.

We designed some posters to show different changes  which take place in each season.

As part of our numeracy we have been examining how to double numbers. We are getting really good at doing this mentally and talking about our answers. One of our focuses this week has been how to use a number line to help us solve addition calculations by counting on. Its really easy when you know how!

Just a little reminder for the children to bring their red homework folders to school every day with their reading books. Many thanks!

P3 ‘Touring’ Scotland

This week we have been continuing to focus on ‘Oor Wee Tour of Scotland’ topic. We have been working individually and collaboratively with our class members as well as the pupils in P3/4 to complete our leaflets, factfiles and group posters; all of which provide information on a different city in Scotland. We have had to use good communication skills in order to gather and record our facts, as well as being mindful of the feelings of others and taking everyone’s opinions on board. We used our ICT skills as well as our skills in researching and recording of information. We discussed as a whole group how our work had to be ‘presentation perfect’, which means neat writing, colourful pictures and completed tasks. Our work is now getting to the completion stages and ready to be displayed for everyone to see! We are looking forward to ‘visiting’ another city soon, and this time we are going to be using our skills in drama to create a TV advert to tell others about our next city!

“I have enjoyed doing the poster because we got to work in groups and we could do pictures and writing.”  commented Erin

“I enjoyed doing the leaflet because of all the writing we could put in and it helped me spell words that I didn’t know” said Joseph

“I liked doing the poster because it was nice working with people on this. We weren’t all doing the same but we did it together so it was all of our work!” commented Maisy

“I liked doing the group poster because it had four boxes that we could fill with lots of stuff.” said Daniel

Primary 2/1 Weekly News

First of all thank you to all the parents and carers who attended last Friday’s Scottish assembly. We very much value all of your support.

Let’s start off our blog this week with a Homework Superstar. This wonderful model of Edinburgh Castle has been created with such attention to detail that all of Primary 2/1 think it deserves pride of place at the start of our blog. There are so many wonderful details which reflect all of our fabulous learning, from stained glass windows, the Scottish Thistle to Mons Meg the famous cannon! I think you will all agree that it is simply fantastic!

We have had an incredibly busy week in Primary 2/1 with all of our continued learning surrounding Scotland and our little friend Hamish. This week we got our thinking caps on and wanted to send Hamish off on another adventure. We all used our imaginations to think of places in the world that Hamish might like to visit.

Robyn wanted Hamish to visit Disneyland.

Ethan wanted him to visit the cinema to see Toy story.

Kayden wanted him to visit Legoland.

Here are some examples of our wonderful work. We are really getting to grips with writing extended sentences using full stops, capital letters and finger spaces and also being able to sound out the trickier words all by ourselves.

We have been working on a few new sounds, h, g and v. The boys and girls are all very eager to lead our learning when we are focusing on a new sound. We take it in turns to stand up beside the smart board and sound out each letter to help each other blend them together to make a word.

In maths we have been learning to tell the time to the hour and half past. Mrs Stevenson set us a challenge to make our own clocks to use. We worked together to position each numeral in the right place and to arrange the minute and hour hand correctly. We then had to change the hands to reflect the time which was called out.

Euan was happy with this activity because he took turns with his team mates, everyone having a go at writing the numbers and changing the time.

We then had a go at playing a whole class Time bingo game, it got quite competitive in the end, but it helped us to read the time with more accuracy and speed!

Robyn loved this game because everyone took turns.

This week we have also been busy applying our artistic skills. Lennon articulately shared the story behind the Thistle becoming Scotland’s national emblem. We had a go at creating our own thistles using chalk and a picture on the smart board as a stimulus. The end result looks fantastic and they are now proudly displayed on our classroom wall.

Elkie said that she loved her thistle once she had made it.

Ashley commented that she loved hers too and felt proud of her work.

Keeping with the same theme, we tried our hand at weaving to create a mini kilt effect. It was super tricky and really required us to use our fine motor skills and concentration. We really enjoyed the challenge and found that it was actually not that difficult. Some of us even created a pattern with the colours.

Sai found this task very very hard, but in the end he did a great job! Well done Sai!

Lastly, we have enjoyed joining in with  Primary 1 this week to take part in some Health and Wellbeing and some emotional literacy. We have been discussing ‘Success’ and what it looks and feels like. We all happily shared our own successes with each other and talked about how we can reflect this in the classroom. One of the main messages that came across was that we should never give up! We watched the story of Robert the Bruce and the spider who kept trying to build her web, it took her 7 attempts! It really made us think about when we find something tricky we should keep going and see it as a challenge! We then moved on to learn the Fischy Music song ‘Encouragement’ we enjoyed singing along and performing the actions. We were able to suggest ways in which we can support or encourage our own friends in the classroom.

Making Shortbread in Primary 3!

As part of our writing lesson we created recipes for making shortbread. This also linked nicely with our ‘Wee Tour of Scotland’ topic. On Wednesday the children in P3 were very lucky to get to make shortbread with Mrs Wood.

We started off by talking about the equipment we would need and checking we had it all, then we did the same for the ingredients. The pupils were very focused and engaged in the discussion. Mrs Wood picked 3 helpers to help her make the shortbread and the other children had the job of supporting these children to ensure they did everything correctly. We had to use our communication skills, our numeracy skills for adding and taking away as well as telling the time for the cooking time. We also used our maths skills for measuring out the ingredients.

After the shortbread had been made and was put in the oven, Mrs Wood selected some more helpers to help her clean and tidy up. Afterwards, once we had taken the shortbread out and left it to cool, we all enjoyed eating a bit!

Here are some comments from the class:

Kayleigh says “It was fun!”

Olivia said “If you want to make shortbread you use butter, sugar and flour.”

Ryley said the dough was “Really sticky!”

“I washed the dishes and then cleaned all the bubbles out” said Kullyn

“When I was tidying up it was very sticky!” commented Summer

The children gave the shortbread a big thumbs up!!!!!

Hamish McHaggis visits P2/1

What a mysterious week we have had!  Late last week our friend Hamish McHaggis unexpectedly disappeared without a trace. It was the most peculiar thing. Nobody knew where he had gone to!!!

We made lost posters using fancy adjectives to describe him….but still no Hamish…..

We were beginning to get worried when all of a sudden Mrs Stevenson got an email from him. What a relief!

It turns out he’d been off on an adventure to Edinburgh…lucky Hamish. He sent us loads of pictures which helped us learn about some famous Edinburgh landmarks.

We especially loved the story of the Greyfriar’s Bobby dog. Some of us even decided to write our own stories about the little dog.

All of this drama has helped us to prepare for our class assembly. We have also been learning our national anthem ‘Flower of Scotland’ and have come up with some very imaginative actions to go alongside the words. As well as a song we have also learned to perform a Scottish country dance, it was great fun. We can’t wait to share it all with you tomorrow.

Update from Primary 3

This week P3 have been demonstrating how well they can read to Mrs Hillan by reading their group readers to her. We have some very fluent readers in P3, as well as some children experimenting with using expression. Keep it up Primary 3!!

In Numeracy this week we have been looking at counting on and counting back. We used some Interactive games online to support this. We had to use our communication skills and collaboration skills in order to work together on these games.

As part of our ‘Wee Tour of Scotland’ we have looked at Edinburgh and Stirling this week. We have worked collaboratively on the laptops to find information to create factfiles and leaflets. We will work hard to complete these next week as well as hopefully looking at another city in Scotland.

Next week we will be making shortbread with Mrs Wood after us writing our own instructions for how to make shortbread last week.

Primary 3 have been enjoying Zumba during our PE time. The pupils were great at following the routines! The children had the opportunity to select which Zumba tracks to follow. Hopefully next week we can maybe try individuals leading learning through our own freestyle Zumba!

Busy Times in Primary 3!

This week in Primary 3 we have introduced our mini topic ‘Oor Wee Tour of Scotland’. We have been working alongside P3/4 which has seen us using the elements of our Social Intelligence Skills – collaboration, communication, leading learning within our groups and being aware of the feelings of others within our groups when listening to and accepting everyone’s answers. We created mind maps of what we already know about Scotland and then came together as a whole group to discuss what we would like to find out Scotland. P3/4 then helped us to locate the main cities of Scotland on a map. We used an atlas to help us.

We also all decided on our own New Year’s Resolutions which have now been displayed in class. It will be good to look back on these to see if we have managed to stick to them!

This week in Number Talks we have been looking at Making Ten. The pupils came up with lots of different sums to do this again this week. We were also very lucky to have Jemma from Nationwide in to visit us during our Numeracy time. She talked to us about her role within the Building Society and spoke to us about saving money. We got to see some of the fancy 50 pence pieces that have been in circulation too! Jemma very kindly brought each of us our own little piggy bank which we got to paint and take home!

Happy New Year from Primary 2/1.

Happy New Year everybody!

It’s been a quick and busy break but we are all back to school and raring to get learning. We’ve had a hectic first week back in Primary 2/1 and have packed lots of exciting learning into our days.

One of the topics we have been having a focus on, is developing our 4 social Intelligence skills which are, leading, communicating, feeling and collaborating. These are essential skills for everyday life and will provide us with the appropriate skill base for entering the workplace, which is a little while off for us but its good to make a start early!

Primary 2/1 have become something of experts at leading number talks, so much so that we don’t even need Mrs Stevenson to help! We are able to discuss and share with the class how we see the number patterns and can confidently record our calculations using the correct symbols, all whilst talking to the class and writing on the board. We really enjoy taking on the role of the teacher and helping our friends learn. Here are some photos of us in action….

We have also started investigating the concept of time in maths this week. We  explored different calendars and found out how many days in total were in each month as well as how many Monday, Tuesdays etc there were. It was tricky at first but we soon got the hang of it. We also discussed why it is helpful to have a calendar and how it can help us remember to important dates and get organised. We decorated our very own calendar to take home, not forgetting to circle the most important date of the year….our birthdays! Just so nobody forgets!!! Here are some examples of our work.

With Burn’s Night fast approaching we have decided to start a mini topic featuring a special visitor to Mrs Fleming’s on Wednesday……Hamish McHaggis. It was all very mysterious indeed. We got a note to tell us that a visitor was hiding somewhere in the class. After a frantic search we found Hamish wrapped up in a tartan scarf. He had brought a number of books with him to help us with our learning. The first book he introduced us to was called the ‘Edinburgh Adventure’. Here we saw lots of famous landmarks in our capital city, like the Edinburgh castle and the Forth Road Bridge. There was also lots of funny Scottish words which Mrs Stevenson couldn’t pronounce, so we helped her out! We are looking forward to learning lots more about our beautiful country with Hamish and his friends.

We had a big think about all the things we already know about Scotland and what we would like to learn about in the next few weeks, we enjoy planning together and having a say in what we would like to learn about.

P3 Topic – Scotland focus

This week Barnaby Bear is in Scotland.  We are learning all about Scotland.   On Tuesday, we made porridge, and we all had the opportunity to taste the porridge when it was ready.   In our writing, we have been learning how to write instructions, and check we have sequenced each thing in the right order.  We have all written instructions for making porridge.

We have been exploring the Scottish flag, and have used different techniques including using wax crayons and water colours to create a wax resist effect.  We have also tried used a range of different textured papers to create flags making a collage effect.

We have also tried some Scottish dancing.  It was great fun!
