Ancient Egyptians

Primary 3 are working hard learning about the Ancient Egyptians.  This week, we have been learning about mummification, and we have been creating beautiful sarcophagus designs.

We have written letters to Mrs Wallace about a trip to the Museum in Edinburgh, and we are planning to visit the new Ancient Egyptian gallery there next week.  We have created a large pyramid in our class.  It has blocks on the outside, and hieroglyphics on the inside.

We have been learning to play a game from Ancient Egyptian times.  It is called Mehen,  and it is quite tricky but a lot of fun.

Last day of term.

There are monsters in Primary 1 and 1/2!!!!!

This week we have been busy learning all about shape. We have been sorting shapes in lots of different ways.

Finlay- It was cool. You had to match the shapes together.

We even used the shapes we knew and our amazing folding skills to create the most fantastic shape monsters!!!!

Charlie- It was really fun making the shape monsters. I added lots of sharp teeth , they were triangles and one big circle eye.

Lucy- Mine only has two teeth…….it is a baby monster.

Aayan- I got a fright the first time I saw them after Mrs Walker put them up. I think they look great though.

This week we have been focusing on the sound ‘z’. We really enjoyed making our zig-zag zebras.

Lexie- I really enjoyed making them and learning the sound ‘z’ because it is my favourite sound and starts my favourite place… the Zoo!!!!

Charlie- I am really proud of mine, I tried really hard.

Fatoumata- I like zebras……alot!

Arthur- I liked writing z with chalk in the playground. I liked how messy it was!

Lexie- I wrote ‘was’. I was really happy because  I remembered it wasn’t an o in the middle but a.

Sophie- I wrote ‘my’. It is a tricky trickster word. It sounds like it has an i ….but it doesn’t.

We really enjoyed drama this week. We used puppets to retell the story of the Rainbow fish. We had to be really careful to get it in the right order or it didn’t make sense.

Darby- I loved being the Rainbow fish. I really liked giving my scales away to all the other fish.

Levente- It was fun. It was like being in a movie!

We have had fun with our new dressing up materials. From super heroes to ballgowns. We have amazing imaginations.

Sophie- I love it… we pretended we were in Frozen.

Finlay- I liked being the Queen’s guard.

Lucy- They were a bit too long so we asked Mrs Cochrane to cut them up. That meant that more friends could play!

Lennon brought his fantastic truck in for ‘Show and Tell’ on Friday.  He showed us the recycle symbol on the side to remind us to reduce, reuse and recycle.  Lennon- I just love trucks!

We have been learning how to use tally marks in our data handling.

We tallied our favourite pets and discovered that the pet we liked the most was dogs. The least favourite was snakes. We had great fun interviewing our friends and counting up the tally marks.

We have VIP friends in primary 1 and 1/2. These are friends that are displaying our school values. Their friends share compliments about their friend and these are recorded on a special VIP certificate.

Finlay- I felt special. I got to go in the front of the line, make lots of class decisions. My chair was very cool!

Daniel- I loved hearing all the compliments…they made me happy.

Homework Stars-

Lexie has been working really hard on her numbers and created a fantastic Spring poem that she shared with the class. Well done Lexie!

Calvin and Harrison also made a spring acrostic poem and were super confident when reciting their poem to the class. Well done!

Georgia created these fantastic owls using recycled materials. We think they are very cute. Well done Georgia!

Maths Fun

We have been working hard in maths, and are enjoying using some of our new resources.

We have colour coded baskets of maths resources including dice, dominoes, cubes and counters.

We have been using our problem solving skills to make pyramids.  We tried using cubes, and we also had a challenge using some cardboard.  It was great fun – we managed to create some square based pyramids and a triangular based pyramid.

Fractions in P5/6

In P5/6 we are learning about equivalent fractions.

Today we made posters to show our understanding of them!

We had to choose from 3 fractions to make a poster – 1/2, 1/3 or 1/5.

We had to think about the different patterns made with the numerator and denominator when coming up with equivalent fractions.

Family Learning

On Friday we held our first aid family learning course. Parents and children learned what to do if they found somebody unconscious, how to put them in the recovery position, how to give CPR and how to bandage a casualty who is bleeding from a wound. Alan from The Lowport Centre was a great teacher and taught everyone a special mnemonic checklist to follow upon finding somebody unconscious:

Danger – check for danger at the scene

Response – is the person able to respond? Are they conscious?

Shout – shout for help

Airway – is their airway clear?

Breathing – are they breathing?

CPR – if they are unconscious and not breathing, begin CPR

All parents and children involved thought this was a valuable learning experience, although they hope to never have to put their new skills to the test!

Gala Day Poster competition

It is only a few months now until the Deans Gala Day (on 15th June) and the support group- who organise the events- are asking all the local primary schools to create posters. The purpose is to advertise the variety of activities and events that happen in the run up to the gala day, and on the day itself.

With all children invited to take part, we thought we should begin by looking at “What makes a good poster?” P6/7 discussed this and agreed on certain things that should be in a poster and created their own “Best Poster “examples.

We also used copies of previous Gala Day  programmes to find information and to create a factfile of information that classes could use. A number of children then took their posters to each class to display ,and explained the competition.

Classes began by watching a clip of a previous Deans Gala Day Crowning Ceremony – much to the delight of the children who then saw themselves on the screen! Children then discussed ideas , looked at how to make a great poster and then set about their task- while listening to Scottish bagpipe music from a local World famous pipeband.

I think you may agree we are off to a great start already ….
