P3 Class 26.08.2024

What a brilliant week we have had.  ELF is up and running in our class now. We worked extremely hard to get back into our reading and writing routine.

We are getting to know more about each other through games, art and group work.

This week we have been inspired to paint using paper as our medium.  This is inspired by an artist called Henri Matisse.

We have been working on recognising place value of a 2 and 3 didgit numbers as well.  We also wrote a recount as we had a baby dragon come to visit us this week.

This Week in Primary 3

  • Literacy

    In writing this week, we were learning about the features of an explanation report. This is where we write about how to do something or how to make something. This week, we wrote a detailed explanation about how to make a sandwich.

    Numeracy

    In numeracy this week, we were learning about money. We have been identifying the value of coins and notes. Additionally, we have been using money to calculate totals by adding various amounts.

    Moreover, we have been playing money games on Educatuon City to support our understanding.

    We also enjoyed the opportunity to meet our new class teachers and classmates on meet the teacher day.

Primary 3 Toy Sale

Dear Parents/Carers

Primary 3 are having a sale of toys, jigsaws, games and books to raise money for plants to put in the planters at the shops in Deans. The sale will be this Friday, the 10th of June from11:15am -11:45am in the Primary 3 classroom.

You are very welcome to come to school from 11:15 and join your child at the sale. This then gives you the opportunity to attend the coffee morning at 11:45 in the hall to meet The Support Squad (Parent Council).

This Week in P3

Literacy

This week, we have been continuing to develop our vocabulary during Word Boost. We have been learning the meaning of 6 words within our text and if they are a noun, verb or adjective. When we hear these words we have to put our finger on our nose.

 

In writing this week, we continued to develop our note taking skills when watching a video about the Eiffel Tower. We only wrote down key facts and words as we were taking our notes. Then, we used our notes to write an information report on the Eiffel Tower. We had make sure to include our core writing targets and genre writing targets within our text.

 

Numeracy and Maths

 

This week, we were developing our critical thinking skills and looking at missing number division equations. We had to rewrite the equation to calculate the missing number.

In maths this week, we were measuring classroom objects in centimetres. We had to use the ruler carefully to get an accurate measurement. Additionally, we were learning to make sensible estimations before measuring objects.

 

IDL

For our animal topic, we were learning about endangered animals. An animal is endangered when the population of that animal is low and there is a possibility of the animal coming extinct. We were researching the possible causes of an animal becoming endangered.

Additionally, we had to work in groups to complete a STEM challenge. We were given wooden pegs and lolly pop sticks and we had to design and build an enclosure for a toy animal.

This Week in P3

Literacy

In reading this week, we were reading a non-fiction passage. We had to use our decoding skills to sound out unfamiliar words. Then, we had to answer questions about the text. We had to look for key words and phrases to find relevant information to help us answer the questions.

In writing, we continued to develop our skills when writing an information report. We read over our feedback and had to up level our writing. This week, we were writing a report about a British landmark.

 

Numeracy  

In numeracy this week, we continued to develop our skills when solving more challenging division equations. During Number Talks, we were discussing different strategies we could use to solve the equations.

 

IDL

For our animal topic this week, we were learning about food chains. We were learning that all food chains start with a producer. Additionally, we were looking at animals that were herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.

This Week in P3

Literacy

In writing this week, we continued to develop our skills for information report writing. This week, we were writing a report about a Scottish landmark. After we had written them we had to peer assess our elbow partners writing using the genre targets.

In reading this week, we continued to develop reading with fluency and expression. We use echo reading to develop our expression. An adult reads the text first and we have to echo back and add the expression.

 

Maths

In numeracy this week, we were looking at division. When dividing we need to share equally. We have been learning to use different strategies to help us calculate the answer.

IDL

For our animal topic, we have been learning about life cycles. A life cycle is different stages of life for a living thing.  We have been learning about the life cycles of a frog and butterfly.

This Week in P3

Literacy

In writing this week, we continued to develop our skills for information report writing. This week, we were writing a report about a wild animal. We used the laptops and non-fiction books to research information about wild animals. Then we used our plans to write an final information report.

In reading this week, we were given a passage about a dragon. We had to read through the passage and underline all the descriptions. Then, we had to draw a picture of the dragon using the information we had underlined.

Maths

In maths this week, we were learning about bar graphs. We conducted our own survey in P3. We had to use the tally marks to record the information for the bar graph and then had to answer questions about the data.

Health and well-being

In P.E. this week, we were learning about football. We were developing our dribbling skills. We had to keep the ball close to our feet to maintain control when moving around the space.

Last Week in P3

Literacy

For writing this week, we started learning about information reports. A person would read an information report to learn facts or information about a particular subject. We read through an example of an information report and then we peer assessed the piece. Then we had to write an information report about a pet.

For reading we continued to develop our summarising skills when reading a variety of different texts.

Maths
For maths this week, we were learning about pictographs. This is a data handling method used to make information easier to read. We them conducted a class survey about our favourite Scottish food.

IDL

In RME, we were learning about the Jewish celebrations of Shabbat. Shabbat is the Sabbath day and it is celebrated on a Saturday. To celebrate Shabbat, there is a family meal and a blessing takes place before the meal. 

This Week in P3

Literacy

For reading this week, we have been focusing on developing our summarising skills. We have been using the hand model to help us develop our skills. We have to write or say key details of the story in about 5 sentences. The hand model gives us 5 questions to answer during a summary.

 

Numeracy

 

This week, we were focusing on multiplication word problems. We had to use our critical thinking skills to help us understand what the question was asking. Additionally, we have been discussing different strategies to solve multiplication equations during Number Talks.

 

IDL

 

It was World Earth Day on the 22nd of April. We were learning about the things that we can do to help protect planet Earth. Then, we had to pick at least five things we that we would to contribute to preserving the planet.

Outdoor Learning

 

Deans Primary are trying to create a suitable and exciting outdoor learning space within the school grounds. Unfortunately, we are being hampered by vandals who destroy our newly planted trees, take apart out new Willow shelter and continually damage our bug hotel and newly erected structure that will be part of our area of biodiversity. On the last occasion some of the nursery items were also destroyed. The children and staff of the school would like to ask the community to support our endeavours.
