Happy Thursday Primary 1/2 28.5.20

Good Morning Everyone!

Good morning boys and girls, I hope you all enjoyed yesterday’s Wellbeing Wednesday activities and managed to spend some time outside in the sunshine. Keep working through your home learning packs and here are some additional activities for today.

Before we start… remember this…have a little dance to start off your day the right way!

Reading

This week we are reading ‘Everyone Got Wet‘ on the Oxford owls website –  https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/      username deans12    password mrsstevenson

Re read the book again with the help of an adult and you can choose either another activity from your home learning guided reading grid or you can choose to complete the activity below.

This is a great activity for those of you who like to draw. I would like you to have another go at creating a story map  for Everyone Got Wet. Once you have re read the story, think about the main events which happened. Now draw them out in order. We have completed an activity like this before for Little Red Riding Hood, in class.  Here is a story map for the story of The Gruffalo, for some inspiration.

I hope you enjoy this activity, remember to colour in your pictures and you can use your finished picture to help you retell the story in your own words. Have a go at reading it out to an adult.

Finally, I have added a game called ‘Kuko Run‘ to our class home learning section of Education city. You have to read the sentence and find the missing word. Good luck.

Phonics

This week we introduced the new sound th. It can be a bit of a tricky one and you have to think carefully about where the sound is coming from. Watch the following clip to help you recall this sound and use it to make some words.

Next, have a go at putting these words into the correct order to make the sentence make sense. First read all the words and think what the sentence should say. Use the words to write out your sentence. Always read over your sentence when you have finished to check it makes sense.

2.

3.

Finally, I have added another game to Educationcity called ‘Three Paths‘ to help you practise reading and recognising this new sound.

Numeracy and Maths

Here are your daily ten for today, again we are focusing on topics covered so far this year.

  2. What season comes after summer?
  3. How many Tuesdays are there in May?
  4. How many Sundays are there in May?
  5. Double 4
  6. Double 3
  7. 2 + ____ = 10
  8. 6 + ____= 10
  9. 9 + ____ =10
  10. 10 + ___ =10

Number talks

We looked at using a rekenrek on Tuesday. Here is another game to play using a rekenrek. Can you say what number is being shown on the rekenrek without counting? You can either write it down or shout it out!

https://youtu.be/V6qogjw4UAc

Dot patterns – here are today’s dot patterns. Just like we have worked on in class through our number talks. How do you see the dots? How many ways can you write a calculation to go with the dot patterns. Don’t forget to use the – += in the correct place.

Story Time/Art

Grab a drink of milk or your water bottle and let’s pretend we’re in class. I’m really enjoying stories by the author Eric Carle, I especially love all the illustrations. Here is another of my favourites.

The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle

In this story the little seed travels through all the seasons. Can you design a seasons poster showing what happens in each season? Here are a few ideas which I love, but you can come up with your own!

I hope you have enjoyed all of this week’s learning tasks. Remember you can email any photos of work you have done into the school – wldeans-ps@westlothian.org.uk

Mrs Lockhart will be here tomorrow posting some more activities for you and I will be back on Monday. Have an amazing weekend and stay safe in the sun!

Deans Den- Thursday 28th May

Good Morning!! I hope you are all safe and well and enjoying the beautiful weather. Have you remembered some of the sun safety rules? I think whilst the weather is good,  we should continue to explore the outdoors. Mrs Morrison has been busy planting flowers in her garden!! I have attached instructions on how to make a twig necklace, ask your grown up to help you.

Primary 2 – Thursday 28th May 2020

Happy Thursday everyone! I hope you had a wonderful Wellbeing Wednesday! Here are some activities to go along with your learning packs for today. Remember to stay safe in the sun!

The first thing I would like you to do today is to watch this video all about sun safety. It has been so lovely to spend time in the sun over the past few days and there are more sunny days to come! Sunny days are wonderful for being outside but we need to remember to stay safe as the sun can be dangerous. Watch the video and discuss the key messages with someone in your home.

Writing

Mrs Anderson has set you a writing task for today! Write a story about the picture below.

Start your story …There was a loud bang and to my surprise, a door appeared on the garden wall.

Learning IntentionWe are learning to write an imaginative story.

Success Criteria – I can give my story a suitable title.

– I can describe a setting and character for my story.

– I can describe what happens in my story.

– I can use capital letters.

– I can use finger spaces in between words.

– I can use full stops at the end of my sentence.

– I can draw a picture to go with my story.

Numeracy

Today, we are going to practise what we know about adding 2 digit numbers together. During number talks in class, we were thinking about the most efficient strategy to add 2 digit numbers. Some people used the strategy of rounding up, and others used the strategy of adding the tens together and then adding the units together. Have a look at the picture for some different strategies to add 2 digit numbers.

Your task is to answer the following questions using one of the strategies above. Discuss your strategy with someone at home.

  • 32 + 23
  • 17 + 12
  • 45 + 13
  • 28 + 41
  • 10 + 37

Extra challenge – 55 + 27

Art

Today, I would like you to draw a picture of a room in your house which has lots of detail. When you have drawn your picture, I would like you to colour all of the 2D shapes blue and all of the 3D shapes red. Remember, 2D shapes are flat shapes and 3D shapes are solid shapes. Can you use different types of lines in your picture?

French

Let’s practice our French colours. Have a look at the rainbow below and colour each arch the correct colour. Once you have finished, you could stick it in your window for everyone to see! I have attached a PowerPoint reminding you of all the colours.

French Colours Powerpoint

 Special Activity

As it is so sunny today, let’s complete a task which uses the sun! I would like you to draw a shadow picture. Take a piece of paper outside and choose an object from your home (this could be any toy or item you like). Position your object so that it’s shadow is on the paper like the photo below. Draw around the outside of the shadow and then move the object so you can see your drawing. Decorate your picture any way you like! Send us a picture of you completing your drawing to wldeans-ps@westlothian.org.uk!

Extra challenge – can you use more than 1 object on the piece of paper?

Personal Project

There were so many great suggestions for our new topic that I think it is best that you complete a personal project instead. Ideas suggested included – dinosaurs, capital cities and flags, World War 1, Wildlife and food! Unfortunately you will not be allowed to do a project on Fortnite. (I double checked with Mrs Wallace!) So all I want you to do for now is think about choosing something to research. This project will take up quite a lot of time so choose wisely. Think of all the work that went into our project on World War 2. You need to pick something that you will enjoy. Also a topic that will allow you to find out lots of interesting information. Maybe chat with someone at home? It should be something you can do by working a few hours each week (average: ½ hour each day) for 4 weeks. Obviously I will give you time during afternoons on TEAMS.

When you are ready the first thing you will need to do is complete your research and make notes in your own words, in your jotter. You can use reference books, for example, encyclopedias and atlases, the internet, newspapers and magazines or personal interviews. Then, after a week of research we will discuss the way forward and what you would like to do in order to present your findings.

Please let me know what you have decided to do when you have committed to an topic.

Practical Science – If you have the equipment and/or maybe someone to help you choose one of the following activities.(Or save them for a rainy day.)

Tornado in a Bottle  (uses simple equipment)

Bright as a New Penny  (uses simple equipment)

Glasgow Science Centre-If you are enjoying the suggestions for practical science there are lots on here – if you scroll down-you can even make homemade ice-cream! Ask permission at home first!

Thursday 28.5.20

Hello boys and girls, I hope everyone has had a good week and you are ready for Thursday’s home learning tasks.

Let’s start with some dancing!

https://youtu.be/FP0wgVhUC9w

R.E.

Today there is a powerpoint for you to look at. We have watched it before but we didn’t complete the activity it suggests. It is a good reminder about all the artifacts you would see in a church. This time watch the powerpoint and complete the activity suggested on slide 11. I’m looking forward to seeing some lovely leaflets.

t-t-252557-ks1-christian-churches-powerpoint_ver_1

Literacy

This week we are going to have a look at adjectives. They describe the nouns. I know you have been using them to help make your writing more interesting. Look at the following powerpoint which shows how useful adjectives are in descriptions. Now follow the instructions in slide 8 and make some super sentences.

t-l-4876-adjectives-powerpoint-_ver_1

Maths

We are continuing our work on fractions. In this powerpoint we can see how we can have fractions of numbers too, not just shapes.

t-n-2544795-fractions-warmup-powerpoint_ver_2

L.I I am learning to recognise fractions in a number.

S.C. I can identify half of a number

Complete the worksheet.

Finding half of a number

Health & Well Being

Today we are going to revisit our topic of friends and what that means.

Draw your friends. Write their names beneath them.

Then think of words to describe them, this ties in nicely with our adjective work.

Look at the example I made ( I think your one will be much better!).

Let’s finish with a story. This is another one of my favourites.
