Congratulations! Amazing Journeys Competition: 2nd Place

I was really pleased to hear from Helen Gorman that one of the groups from P6 won second place in the ‘Amazing Journeys’ competition the class recently entered.Their project presentation showed “good scientific knowledge, interesting ideas and was clearly presented.”

The Magnetic Levitation Train group recorded their learning journey, using the Book Creator App, as they worked on their science project for Science Week. I am so pleased for them as I know how much research and hard work they put into the design and the building of the train.  Well done!

Their reward, £50 for STEM materials for the school and public recognition as their presentation will be available to view on the STEM network.

Outdoor Learning: Mapping Skills

Primary 6 were outdoors this week and created a map of the school using the orienteering symbols they had learned with Mrs. Collington. The next day they had to use a map of the school to locate hidden letters as part of a treasure trail. Once all letters were found they rearranged them to identify the location of the treasure. All the class succeeded and they were rewarded with their treasure, a chocolate lolly!

The class visited the STEM room and were given the instruction to identify resources to support our topic, The Great Outdoors. Everyone in each group collected one item and returned to the classroom to explain their choice. Next week we shall decide what we need to take as we go on our first nature walk.

The Expressive Arts/The Great Outdoors

This week the class designed and created stained glass windows and a card to celebrate the season of Easter.

Miss White, the music teacher, introduced African instruments to the class. They particularly enjoyed plying the African drums.

Our new topic is The Great Outdoors. Everyone identified in their jotter what they thought ‘Outdoor Learning’ is and we collated the information in a giant mind map.

Electrical Circuits

The class were given the challenge this week to build electrical circuits using a bag full of electrical parts. Each group had to work together to create a series circuit and/or a parallel circuit, introducing switches when appropriate. Every group managed to build a working circuit as a team. They then explained how they did it, the knowledge and understanding behind each type of circuit and finally the skills required for the task.

Science Showcase

SCIENCE WEEK 2019

 OUR SHOWCASE

Throughout Science Week each class undertook a project based on the theme of ‘Journeys’. St.Mary’s pupils showcased their learning in the school to family and invited guests.

P5 & P5/6: Safely over the Sea

P6: Travelling by Train

P6/7 & P7: Round the Racetrack

We know everyone  enjoyed sharing in our learning experience today. We loved Science Week and our Showcase.

Mrs. Kellas would like to take this opportunity to thank Alistair Grant, a Science lecturer at Edinburgh University for his continued support. His guidance and practical skills have enabled numerous school projects to be undertaken over the past 3 years.

Finally I would like to thank all the staff and the children for their enthusiasm and commitment throughout Science Week. It was a pleasure to see pupils and family members engaged in educational discussion and having fun.

Science Week

Over the past week the class have had visitors with an expertise in Science, undertaken their ‘Journey’ project, carried out experiments, researched inventors and inventions and used i-pads to record all the learning that has taken place. They are looking forward to sharing their learning with others during our Science Showcase on Monday the 18th between 2pm and 4pm.

Making Slime

Primary 3/4 were learning the chemistry behind the making of slime.  Mrs. Horne discussed the molecules involved using visual aids before she assisted the class in making slime using a variety of ingredients.

These young scientists managed to produce 4 types of slime successfully.  They will showcase their slime on Monday, as we celebrate the end of Science Week, and share the learning that took place.

Great fun was had by all!

Pancake Tuesday

Sharing halves.
Joseph, Nathan, Freya, Oliver and Ruby tucking in..

P3/4 enjoyed Pancake Tuesday as a prelude to Ash Wednesday.  Many of the class are preparing for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Communion so we enjoyed throwing, catching and eating delicious pancakes before the start of Lent.

Joe and Kenzie enjoying themselves.
Jack the first to catch the pancake. Well done!
Cream or chocolate? So hard to decide for Jennifer and Tamia.
Here we go! Cerys is ready to catch the pancake.

Science Week 2019 : Theme : Journeys

Thank you for the kind donations of materials requested to support us during Science Week.

I would like to invite you, on behalf of the school, to our SCIENCE SHOWCASE on Monday the 18th of March in the Assembly Hall. The completed projects and a selection of children will be there to share their learning with you and to answer any questions you may have. Drop in and see what we have all been up to anytime between 2p.m. and 4p.m. Hope to see you there!

Fair-trade Fortnight

Thank you for supporting our 90kg Rice Challenge. To date we have sold 60kg of the rice we purchased to support Fair-trade. The rice will be sold until the end of term so please continue to place an order stating which type of rice you prefer.

On Tuesday the children from the Fair-trade Group put on a wonderful assembly to promote and educate the children in the school on how chocolate gets from the bean to the customer. This highlighted the people involved in the supply chain and why we should pay a fair price for our goods. The audience were then rewarded with a sample of Divine Chocolate that was kindly donated to the school.

I would also like to say thank you to Tate and Lyle who donated some bags of Fair-trade sugar and caster sugar which we have used to bake and in general throughout the school.
