Cardio to Music

On Wednesday morning P5, P6 and P7 children were offered the opportunity to take part in a Cardio to Music exercise class that I ran in school from 8.30 until 9.00. The feedback was very positive and I look forward to seeing how many children will join us this Wednesday. These 2 taster sessions will determine if I shall continue this style of class after the Easter Holidays. Why not try it out?

Back to Normal

Now we are back in school full time the children have been working hard as usual.

The class have been calculating amounts of money using coins and matching amounts of money written in a variety of ways; £1.25, one pound twenty five, 125p.

Mr Grant was in to continue our experiments on recording heart rate. Having looked at ways to eliminate error, when using the sensor, the children came up with some super ideas. The photographs show one of the ways; place your hand on a table and place a finger on top of the sensor.

St. Mary’s Theme Park

As part of our Disney project each animation group is going to design a theme park ride. The ride your group will design shall relate to the animation film you are currently filming e.g. Star Wars, Harry Potter etc. On a blank sheet of A4 paper, or in your homework jotter, draw a draft design of you ride. Give it a title, the age range/height it is appropriate for, how the ride works, how long it lasts and the price you will charge people. Add more information if you want as we prepare to design our own theme park. You can base your design on all the fun things you would like to do at a theme park or have experienced. Have fun!

World Book Day

Normally we celebrate World Book Day by dressing up as a character from a book and we look for photographs to be handed in that show unusual places to be ‘caught reading’.

If you are dressing up today at home, as a character from a book, take a photograph and try and find an unusual place to read your book!

I know P4/5K have Dr Seuss costumes they could wear again; have a fun day whatever you do.

Snow and the Engineer Challenge

As the weather has been so bad roads around Stirling have closed and people are being advised not to travel in the car. Can you think as a design engineer and overcome this problem? What could you design to help people continue to travel in these conditions? Something to help cars cope with the conditions or another form of transport that would make travel easier; looking forward to seeing and hearing what you come up with. Keep me posted.

School closed: Have fun in the snow and the cold.

SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS/SNOW SCULPTURES

Looking for something to do in the cold weather and snow?

Creating a frozen bubble:

Find an area that is sheltered from the wind. Even the slightest breeze will carry your bubble.
Blow the bubbles high in the air so that as they float to the ground they have time to freeze.
Depending on your temperature/weather ~ it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a few moments for the bubbles to freeze and start forming crystalline patterns.

Try blowing bubbles early in the morning or in the evening. This is the colder part of the day and will help your bubbles stay frozen.
Wave your wand instead of blowing into the wand to make bubbles. The warm air from your lungs causes the bubble to take longer to freeze.

Keep trying and see how it goes!

Snow Volcano Science

Snow Volcano
Materials

A cup or plastic bottle
Baking soda
Vinegar
Food colouring (if colour is desired)
Method
To make a snow volcano you will first need snow.  Take a plastic cup and set it on the ground in the snow. Then,  pile snow up and around the cup to form “the volcano”.

Once the volcano is formed add baking soda and food colouring to the cup which is now acting as the volcanoes core. Now, it is time to make it erupt! Pour in vinegar and then step back.

Or make some Disney snow sculptures for fun……….

Take a photograph to record your attempts!

The Latest in P4/5K

Over the past week the class have continued their Health and Wellbeing investigations on heart rate. By attaching their finger to a sensor machine, built by Mr Grant, and viewing the results on a computer screen the children could see what their resting heart rate was. This sensor reading eliminates the errors that can occur when trying to take your own or another person’s pulse.

Our topic lessons saw the children working in their groups to design a logo, a company name and a poster to advertise their forthcoming short animation films. Filming shall begin this week as the scripts are now complete and the role each member shall play allocated.
