The Great Outdoors / Music

During the week P6 went on their third outdoor learning walk to Ladywell Park. Our focus this time was on what lives in our local area beside the water.

Each group took a magnifying glass and sample jars to examine what they found. Using i-Pads they photographed different species and identified what they were using an App we installed called I-Seek.

They loved the den they found among the trees and bushes. Next week we will make a Bug Hotel to see what lives in the grounds of the school and try den making too.

Back in school the class continued to develop their skills and knowledge in Music by learning an African lullaby.

The Light on Dumyat / The Great Outdoors

Primary 6 and Primary 7 participated in a walk up Dumyat on Friday organised by Stirling Council and SP Energy.

The project began with the pupils reading The Light on Dumyat and undertaking related activities at school.  Throughout the walk the children were entertained by actors, who performed aspects of the story, and who gave the pupils clues to solve a code.

As part of our Great Outdoors topic my class had to record the wind speed at various points, using anemometers they made in school, photograph the landscape and record what they could see on their journey.

The weather was glorious and the views breathtaking as we made our way to the top. A great day was had by all!

P6 Active Learning

Another busy week in P6.

Outdoor learning continued with a joint nature walk with P1 to explore the plants and flowers in Bluebell Wood .

Learning angles and how to use a protractor aided our measuring of the speed of wind using our home made anemometers.

At the end of the week a circuit ensured the class became more confident in speaking and writing in French.

Maths: Transferable Skills

Mrs. Collington has been teaching the class coordinates, in particular 4 point grid references, to both plot and describe the location of a point on a grid.

Using a map of the world the class identified grid references for different countries, played grid reference games on the i-Pads, identified letters on given grid references to spell a message and at the whiteboard identified a grid reference for a symbol or placed a symbol on a given grid reference. Some children even managed to look at 6 point grid references.

The class are working hard on their mapping skills in preparation for their forthcoming walk up Dumyat and to aid us as we venture out in our local area and explore the ‘great outdoors’.

Netball Tournament

Well done to the P6 Team who participated in a Netball Tournament at Bannockburn High tonight. The team did really well displaying the skills they have developed over the past year and super sportsmanship. I am sure Mrs. MacDougall , your former coach, will be pleased to hear you are continuing to play and  proud of what you have  achieved.

Congratulations! Amazing Journeys Competition: 2nd Place

I was really pleased to hear from Helen Gorman that one of the groups from P6 won second place in the ‘Amazing Journeys’ competition the class recently entered.Their project presentation showed “good scientific knowledge, interesting ideas and was clearly presented.”

The Magnetic Levitation Train group recorded their learning journey, using the Book Creator App, as they worked on their science project for Science Week. I am so pleased for them as I know how much research and hard work they put into the design and the building of the train.  Well done!

Their reward, £50 for STEM materials for the school and public recognition as their presentation will be available to view on the STEM network.

Outdoor Learning: Mapping Skills

Primary 6 were outdoors this week and created a map of the school using the orienteering symbols they had learned with Mrs. Collington. The next day they had to use a map of the school to locate hidden letters as part of a treasure trail. Once all letters were found they rearranged them to identify the location of the treasure. All the class succeeded and they were rewarded with their treasure, a chocolate lolly!

The class visited the STEM room and were given the instruction to identify resources to support our topic, The Great Outdoors. Everyone in each group collected one item and returned to the classroom to explain their choice. Next week we shall decide what we need to take as we go on our first nature walk.

The Expressive Arts/The Great Outdoors

This week the class designed and created stained glass windows and a card to celebrate the season of Easter.

Miss White, the music teacher, introduced African instruments to the class. They particularly enjoyed plying the African drums.

Our new topic is The Great Outdoors. Everyone identified in their jotter what they thought ‘Outdoor Learning’ is and we collated the information in a giant mind map.

Electrical Circuits

The class were given the challenge this week to build electrical circuits using a bag full of electrical parts. Each group had to work together to create a series circuit and/or a parallel circuit, introducing switches when appropriate. Every group managed to build a working circuit as a team. They then explained how they did it, the knowledge and understanding behind each type of circuit and finally the skills required for the task.
