We had a great session with the Glasgow Science outreach service. They came to teach us about the whole process of digestion from start to finish!
We started with a cream cracker challenge, which showed the importance of saliva. Frankie and Lily Jane just couldn’t get those two crackers eaten in 2 minutes.
We saw how the food we eat gets mushed up in our mouth, stomach and intestines and watched Ms Scanlan catch the end product!!!
It was good to see everyone back after the holidays and lovely to hear about all the fun things that we’ve been doing during the holidays.
Emma Chittick came to do her second STEM session and we all had fun programming the space satellite to do a few more things.
It was great to get our emails from Olenguruone this week and we have been busy putting together our replies and making little gifts for our friends. Ms Scanlan is going to post them this weekend and hopefully they will arrive in Kenya soon.
It was really good to receive our certificate in the post this week. We’re still feeding the birds 🐦 everyday and seeing lots of spring migrants and breeding birds coming through.
All the class have now received their emails from their 🇰🇪 Kenyan pen pals. We are busy getting ready replies to send to them at the end of the week.
The P 6/7 s have been working hard on their reading this term. Some of the bairns have made a super effort to read more frequently, or more difficult books, or read books by unfamiliar authors. Ms Scanlan had a really difficult job deciding which two pupils should get a £10 book voucher. In the end she had to put several names in a hat and the two well-deserved winners were Michaela Christie and Jemima Budge. Well done to all the excellent and enthusiastic readers in P6/7!
Joy Duncan has worked with all our classes this term and what a treat it was today to hear and watch all the different drumming, singing and dancing from all over Africa.
Every class performed something quite different and the audience loved it. It was clear by looking at all the children, that they really enjoyed their learning too.

Today we had the first of our STEM sessions. Emma is going into schools in Shetland to promote an interest in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
We could pair up or work on our own and we had an iPad and a lego vehicle and we had to programme it to do several things. It had to move in an orbit ( just like a satellite), use a sonic sensor, react to an object (space debris) and capture and move space debris.
P6/7 we’re really quick at learning to do this and we had a lot of fun programming the vehicles 🚗. We are looking forward to Emma coming back in the summer term. Let’s hope this inspires a few of the P6/7s to think about working in some of the STEM subjects in future. 🚀 💻 👩🔬
Primary 7 has a fantastic John Muir day. The weather was perfect for March, flat calm and dry, so Pete decided to take us to Bressay.
We walked from the Noss car park down to the shore, where we had watched an otter feeding in the seaweed on fish.
We walked south, past the broch and had fun, climbing, jumping and exploring the coastline.
Really excited to see last year’s Primary 7 class are on the front of the John Muir Spring newsletter. Just in time to get us excited about our trip on Monday!
