P7 Survived!…

WE SURVIVED!

What a week P7 had at Loch Insh. We’ve arrived home safely – 34 extremely tired pupils and 4 staff plagued with fatigue who can’t wait for the weekend to begin.

We hope you all rest over the weekend, and we’ll see you back on Monday, rested and raring to go for the next 6 weeks!

P6 had a great week with Mrs MacLeod and are excited to get all of the Loch Insh stories on Monday.

Have a great weekend!
Mr.Cook, Mrs.MacLeod and Mrs.Prentice

WOW-EEE!

Bravo! Bravo!

Roger was very most impressed with your singing this afternoon. Remember his advice – Don’t let a little problem grow into a big problem. If you’ve not learnt your words yet, spend some time over the next week learning them. Our final performance is on Wednesday 29th May.

Loch Insh – P7 pupils going to Loch Insh, you are reminded that you will need to bring a packed lunch for Monday, and should wear your school uniform to school. We will change when we arrive at Loch Insh.

We’ll still be collecting tinned potatoes and biscuits for the Highland Foodbank next week – any donations will be appreciated.

Have a great weekend!
Mr.Cook, Mrs.MacLeod and Mrs.Prentice

Where the next meal’s coming from!

REMINDER: NO swimming tomorrow – we have Scottish Opera in the afternoon

Lochardil Primary School is supporting the Highland Foodbank. We have been asked to support the Highland Foodbank by donating tins of potatoes and biscuits. We’ve got until next Friday, 17th May, to make a donation. Let’s see if P6/7 can really make a difference.

Well done to the Netball team – you all performed excellently at the tournament yesterday. It was great to see you in with your medals today.

Loch Insh rooms – find images of the room plans below. Please note that some of the rooms will have different furniture (e.g. bunkbeds) which may not be on the floorplan.

Keep rehearsing those Scottish Opera words – Roger is here tomorrow!

P7 end of term disco – Thursday 27th June 2013

To the parents of P7 pupils,

I can hardly believe our kids are at the end of P7 already – where have the last seven years gone?

To help make their last days at primary school even more memorable, it falls upon us parents to organise their last school disco/party.

If you would like to help I’m organising a get together next Wednesday at 7.30pm (15.05.13) at my house. Please text me if you can attend on 07990803584.

With many thanks,

Suzanne Kane

May Weekend!

With Monday off school for May weekend, we hope that you have a fantastic long weekend.

Here’s some blogging homework for Tuesday. The question you need to answer and post your response to on the blog is:

What is Biodiversity and Sustainabilty?

The following website may give you a helping hand – but REMEMBER, we want the answer in your OWN words.

CALENDAR

Since term 4 is a little, what might we call it, chaotic in P6/7 in terms of events and excursions, we’ve sent home a calendar with all of the important dates for May and June. You’ll see that the calendar still has to add Sports Day, End of Term Service and the Talent Show. These dates will be confirmed at a later date. You can find a PDF version of the calendar below in case it has  gone walk-about.

ECO ECO ECO ECO ECO!

Today we had another successful afternoon for our Biodiversity and Sustainability topic. Our Garden Party date has been set for Monday 24th June 2013 – keep this date in your diary to see our showcase of our hard work.

The ECO Art group busied away on doing their floral paintings. We’re well on our way to having them finished for the big day.

The ECO Gardeners were busy planting, weeding, raking and tidying. The garden is looking fantastic.

Mrs MacLeod’s science group found that the seeds actually germinated better in the DARK rather than the sunlight.

Mr Cook’s science group found that soda water provides seeds with excellent nutrients. Our seeds that were ‘growing’ in vinegar unfortunately died.

Check out our fantastic pictures below:

See you tomorrow – with your PE kit!
Mr.Cook, Mrs.MacLeod and Mrs.Prentice

Notices!!!

In preparation for our Garden Party, can the ECO Cairns, ECO Bedding Plant and ECO Planting groups please ensure that they have clothes that they don’t mind getting dirty, and shoes/wellies that are suitable for the garden tomorrow (Wednesday). We will be continuing our work from last week.

Bikeability (P7) – starts tomorrow (Wednesday). You need to make sure you bring your bike and your helmet with you. This week will be the safety check.  Miss Shimmield has been extremely busy sorting it out – thank you again Miss Shimmield.

Loch Insh – Remember that over the next week and a half, you should start bringing in any medicines you have, along with the medical slip. That way we can ensure that we’ve organised the medical resources in advance. We are awaiting confirmation from Loch Insh regarding the different room sizes we have this year. Once we have got this, we will be able to put the groups together.

Reports 2013 – This week in writing you’re writing YOUR section of the report. The three titles are ‘My Curricular Learning’, ‘My achievements’, and ‘My next steps’. Have a good think tonight if there’s anything that you want to add to your final draft tomorrow.

We think that’s everything on the ‘notice-board’!
Mr.Cook, Mrs.MacLeod and Mrs.Prentice

Perimeter Perimeter…

Perimeter – the length of the outside edge of a shape . . .

The Perimeter Song – Watch it two or three times, you’ll know the words, and you’ll never forget what perimeter is again.

The Perimeter Song – Click Here!

Within our measure topic, we need to be able to calculate the perimeter of different shapes and objects. The game below will test your perimeter knowledge. Level 1 is quite simple, but it gets harder as you move through the levels. Let us know how you get on playing the game.

See you tomorrow – for some more work with “Perimeter . . . Perimeter”
Mr.Cook, Mrs.MacLeod and Mrs.Prentice

Bio-Ability!

This week in our Biodiversity and Sustainability (Bio-Ability) topic; we’ve managed to:

  • Begin our art work, inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe

  • Learn how to create a science report: using the words ‘hypothesis’, ‘apparatus’ and ‘method’

  • Planting our bedding plants, vegetables and making insect cairns in our garden

We’ll update you on progress next week. We need to choose a day for our Garden Party – which we’ll decide on next week.

The projects are looking fantastic – We can’t wait to start reading them.

See you on Monday! Have a great weekend!
Mr.Cook, Mrs.MacLeod and Mrs.Prentice

Reading Scales!

REMINDER: Personal Projects are due tomorrow! (Friday 26th April 2013)

REMINDER: P7 Flag Football – GROUP A tomorrow – REMEMBER your PE kit!

As part of our measure topic in maths, something we need to be able to do is read scales.

Some scales are simple to read; but what we’ve found out are that others are a bit more tricky.

Play the games below to see how you are at reading scales:

Rock Challenge DVD!

Today we gave each pupil a copy of our Rock Challenge performance on DVD. We’d like to thank Mr Nairn for his assistance with the copying of the DVDs!

We had originally planned to put on a performance for parents/carers; however due to a lack of space within the school, and the fact that the lights and staging lifted the performance, we felt it was better to give you a copy which you can watch time and time again.

Play the DVD from 7 minutes – this will take you to Georgia’s introduction before the performance.

Following on from our Sonnet 18 blog post yesterday – here’s a video showing that children really CAN learn and recite the sonnet to an audience:

William Shakespeare

April is ‘Poetry Month’.

Yesterday we studied William Shakespeare’s use of old English in Sonnet 18. We learned that a sonnet has 14 lines, and the two final lines rhyme. Today we begun developing ways to learn the poem. We will continue to work on learning this by heart over the next few weeks. Our aim is to perform this at our Summer Garden Party.

You’ll find the poem in both written and audio form below:

SONNET 18

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm’d;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature’s changing course untrimm’d;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander’st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou growest:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this and this gives life to thee.

Earth Day – 2013

Today is Earth Day – a day in which people around the world not only celebrate the living things on our planet, but also campaign to protect our world from Global Warming. The videos below deliver the message that we need to act NOW, before it’s too late. Hopefully with our biodiversity and sustainability work this term, we will have a positive impact on the world.

Football Success!

Very well done to the Lochardil P6/7 A team who qualified for the National Finals of the SSFA Primary Schools Cup yesterday in Dundee.

Great performances all round yesterday in very windy conditions overcoming teams from Dundee, Aberdeen, Falkirk, Avoch and Scone. Well done to the players Ryan, Danni, Charlie, Leon, Bradi, Ewan, Scott and Cameron; and to the coaches Tim and Iain – a fantastic achievement.

The finals will be played in Glasgow on Monday 22nd April so good luck to them all.

It was great to get outside in the sunshine today during maths, reading and french. Here is hoping the good weather continues!

Have a great weekend!
Mr.Cook, Mrs.MacLeod and Mrs.Prentice

Build a shed…

P7s  – Bring your PE kit tomorrow!

Over the next four weeks, our topic in maths is ‘Measure’. In measure, we’ll be looking at length, weight and volume; in addition to perimeter and area. Multiplying and Dividing by 10 – 100 – 1,000 are crucial skills when converting the different units.

Ever fancied building a shed? Well you better get your multiplication and division skills brushed up. Play the game below; answer the 15 questions correctly, and you will complete your shed. (You can click the shed to take you to the game also)

Pupils of the Month

Let’s find out who P6/7’s Pupils of the Month were for March

Aimee – Aimee is conscientious, giving 100% in every task that she puts her mind to. She was a crucial part of the technical team in our Rock Challenge performance last month, operating the spotlights – Well Done Aimee!

Lewis – Lewis has been demonstrating excellent sportsmanship during our orienteering unit in PE. He has supported and encouraged his team to succeed – an excellent quality witnessed by pupils and staff. Great effort Lewis!

Anna N – Anna always offers a helping hand to her peers and her teachers. Her enthusiasm shines through in every task she puts her mind to. One of our readers at the Easter Service – working hard to perfect her pace and volume. Excellent work Anna!

Well done to the three of our Pupils of the Month. They have modelled the qualities that we like to see in our Lochardil Citizens.

Our Summer Garden Party…

Tomorrow the preparation begins for our Summer Garden Party – it’s going to be quite the ECO-Extravaganza.

The ECO Art group tomorrow will begin to design Georgia O’Keeffe style art work – an American artist who created iconic flower designs.

Your task: Research Georgia O’Keeffe flower art work by TUESDAY 23rd April 2013. Either print out your favourite flower design, or create your own design inspired by O’Keeffe using coloured pencils. You will then begin your flower canvas whilst working with Mrs Prentice. If you’re in the art group tomorrow, have a look at her art work tonight to get some ideas.

Those people working in the ECO Planting, ECO Bedding Plants and ECO Cairns groups should bring shoes for working out in the garden, and preferably a change of clothes as you may get dirty.

We look forward to getting outdoors tomorrow!

Mr.Cook, Mrs.MacLeod and Mrs.Prentice

Welcome Back!

Welcome back P6/7. It’s our final term altogether before the P7s depart and we gain a shiny new P7. We’ve an exciting term ahead between our Scottish Opera performance and Loch Insh (P7).

Talking of Scottish Opera… It is that time of year again. This year we’re doing ‘The Legend of Slim McBride and The Lost Tribe’. It’s going to be an excellent link to our ‘Biodiversity and Sustainability’ topic.

Let’s find tell you a bit more about our new topic…

Our Aim

Children will prepare for and organise a Summer Ecological Garden Party for the Lochardil community. At the garden party learners aim to: sell vegetables which they’ve grown in the garden, have summer snacks, sell eco-themed art work, and present on the work they’ve done in biodiversity and sustainability.

Our sub-topics and questions

‘We Go Eco’
What can we do to make our school more ecological?

 ‘Here, There, Everywhere’
If we do something here, how can we have an impact globally?

‘Plant Attack’
When planting, what factors do we need to consider?

The skills we want to develop

If you’ve got green-fingers, or have any knowledge or expertise on ‘Biodiversity and Sustainability’ – please feel free to give us a phone or pop in to see us; your contribution would be appreciated.

See you tomorrow,
Mr.Cook, Mrs.MacLeod and Mrs.Prentice

Happy Easter!

Another full on term in P6/7 has reached an end; it only seems like yesterday we arrived back after the Christmas holidays. We hope that you have a fantastic Easter break – don’t go gorging too much chocolate (Mr Cook will be once lent is over on Sunday).

Easter will be a great time for you to put your project together – It is due on Friday the 26th of April. Hopefully the Sir Walter Scott project showcase spurred you on on Monday.

Project guidelines can be found below:

P6 Personal Project- GUIDANCE

P7 Personal Project- GUIDANCE

Reference and Bibliography- GUIDANCE

We’re looking forward to a busy next term – kicking off with our Biodiversity and Sustainability topic! See you April 15th!

Mr.Cook, Mrs.MacLeod and Mrs.Prentice

Let’s get ready to wordle…

An excellent Easter Service today – many thanks to Rev Slack and Rev Nimo for their service and hospitality. Well done to Anna and Finlay who read their passages perfectly.

Alone on a Wide Wide Sea - Michael Morpurgo

When Mr Cook’s reading group finish a book, each person is to write an evaluation on our Glow wiki. This is a way of sharing what we’ve read with the class.

The Empty Frame - Ann Pilling

However, a way of sharing what we’ve read with everyone else is through a word cloud. We’ve had a word cloud on our blog for a while – a way of displaying key words about a topic or subject.

My Friend Walter - Michael Morpurgo
My Friend Walter - Michael Morpurgo

Here are three word clouds for the novels we finished last week. We aim to use these next term to record information. Have a go at creating one by clicking the link below:

See you tomorrow for the LAST DAY OF TERM!
Mr.Cook, Mrs.MacLeod and Mrs.Prentice

What’s your alternative?

Remember – The Easter Service is tomorrow afternoon. You will need sensible shoes and a jacket for walking to and from the CCC

Tomorrow we’ll continue to write our Alternative Fairytales, after spending last week planning our ideas. Roald Dahl’s ‘Revolting Rhymes’ are an excellent way of using humour and rhyme to grab the reader’s attention.

Last week we saw how Little Red Riding Hood dealt with the wolf. See what happens to the wolf in the Three Little Pigs. Think about how Roald Dahl gives each character their own distinct voice. Even written down, you could work out which character was talking.

Hockey Team Success

Well done to the Lochardil Hockey Team who took part in the tournament on Saturday.

See the message from Mrs Campbell below:

The hockey team played really well on Saturday at the hockey tournament. They finished 5th out of the 12 teams that were competing, in extremely cold conditions. They played 6 games of a straight 12 minutes and had 2 wins, 3 draws and only 1 loss. We did have to “borrow” two girls, Alisha from Cauldeen and Katrina from the Inverness Hockey Club as we had no girls able to play, and the rules require two girls to be on the pitch during all games.

Earth Hour

Tomorrow, Saturday 23rd of March 2013, is the day which the world gets together for ‘Earth Hour’.

Tomorrow night, countries around the world will turn their lights off at 8.30pm for one hour – to show their support for action on climate change and a sustainable future.

As part of our climate change topic, we encourage any support which you can give tomorrow night by popping off unused lights and electrics for an hour.

Find more information on the following link – there are some cool games in the ‘Fun Stuff’ section:

Have a fantastic weekend!

Orienteering!

Cardio exercise (exercise which gets the heartrate going) is excellent for your body when done in moderation. Orienteering is a skill which not only increases the heart rate using short running bursts with small rest breaks; but also develops groups being able to work together, supporting one another, reading maps.

It’s great to see the real team ethos building up within the group over the past two weeks. Our Supportive Superstars – Mackenzie and Lewis – have been excellent at encouraging their groups to succeed.

Mrs MacLeod and Mr Cook made it that bit more difficult today – using a one-way-system, and encouraging pupils to beat their best time as a group.

With excellent sunny, and a little chilly, weather – it’s a great way to spend our PE lesson.

See you tomorrow,
Mr.Cook, Mrs.MacLeod and Mrs.Prentice
