May Weekend!

With Monday off school for May weekend, we hope that you have a fantastic long weekend.

Here’s some blogging homework for Tuesday. The question you need to answer and post your response to on the blog is:

What is Biodiversity and Sustainabilty?

The following website may give you a helping hand – but REMEMBER, we want the answer in your OWN words.

ECO ECO ECO ECO ECO!

Today we had another successful afternoon for our Biodiversity and Sustainability topic. Our Garden Party date has been set for Monday 24th June 2013 – keep this date in your diary to see our showcase of our hard work.

The ECO Art group busied away on doing their floral paintings. We’re well on our way to having them finished for the big day.

The ECO Gardeners were busy planting, weeding, raking and tidying. The garden is looking fantastic.

Mrs MacLeod’s science group found that the seeds actually germinated better in the DARK rather than the sunlight.

Mr Cook’s science group found that soda water provides seeds with excellent nutrients. Our seeds that were ‘growing’ in vinegar unfortunately died.

Check out our fantastic pictures below:

See you tomorrow – with your PE kit!

Bio-Ability!

This week in our Biodiversity and Sustainability (Bio-Ability) topic; we’ve managed to:

  • Begin our art work, inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe

  • Learn how to create a science report: using the words ‘hypothesis’, ‘apparatus’ and ‘method’

  • Planting our bedding plants, vegetables and making insect cairns in our garden

We’ll update you on progress next week. We need to choose a day for our Garden Party – which we’ll decide on next week.

The projects are looking fantastic – We can’t wait to start reading them.

See you on Monday! Have a great weekend!

Earth Day – 2013

Today is Earth Day – a day in which people around the world not only celebrate the living things on our planet, but also campaign to protect our world from Global Warming. The videos below deliver the message that we need to act NOW, before it’s too late. Hopefully with our biodiversity and sustainability work this term, we will have a positive impact on the world.

Our Summer Garden Party…

Tomorrow the preparation begins for our Summer Garden Party – it’s going to be quite the ECO-Extravaganza.

The ECO Art group tomorrow will begin to design Georgia O’Keeffe style art work – an American artist who created iconic flower designs.

Your task: Research Georgia O’Keeffe flower art work by TUESDAY 23rd April 2013. Either print out your favourite flower design, or create your own design inspired by O’Keeffe using coloured pencils. You will then begin your flower canvas whilst working with Mrs Prentice. If you’re in the art group tomorrow, have a look at her art work tonight to get some ideas.

Those people working in the ECO Planting, ECO Bedding Plants and ECO Cairns groups should bring shoes for working out in the garden, and preferably a change of clothes as you may get dirty.

We look forward to getting outdoors tomorrow!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back P6/7. It’s our final term altogether before the P7s depart and we gain a shiny new P7. We’ve an exciting term ahead between our Scottish Opera performance and Loch Insh (P7).

Talking of Scottish Opera… It is that time of year again. This year we’re doing ‘The Legend of Slim McBride and The Lost Tribe’. It’s going to be an excellent link to our ‘Biodiversity and Sustainability’ topic.

Let’s find tell you a bit more about our new topic…

Our Aim

Children will prepare for and organise a Summer Ecological Garden Party for the Lochardil community. At the garden party learners aim to: sell vegetables which they’ve grown in the garden, have summer snacks, sell eco-themed art work, and present on the work they’ve done in biodiversity and sustainability.

Our sub-topics and questions

‘We Go Eco’
What can we do to make our school more ecological?

 ‘Here, There, Everywhere’
If we do something here, how can we have an impact globally?

‘Plant Attack’
When planting, what factors do we need to consider?

The skills we want to develop
