Short or Long?

This week in Room 2, we have been learning about measure. We learned the terms ‘short’ and ‘long’. We measured different items against each other to work out which was the longest and which was the shortest. We were then set challenges to create long and short trains, lines and towers to name a few. We also discussed the term ‘tall’ and used our height to work out if we were taller or shorter than a friend. This led to an interesting discussion about our ages. However, we soon worked out that our age and height had no correlation. Here are some pictures of our learning.

As Halloween falls on our usual Thursday PE day next week, we will move PE to Wednesday 30th October instead. Pupils should come to school wearing their PE kits. Thank you for your cooperation with this. Have a lovely weekend everyone! 🙂

Room 6

We’ve had a very busy week consolidating and building on our knowledge of measure!

We used non standard units of measure, such as cubes and hands, to find the length and height of objects around the class. We even measured our friends!

We also worked on our estimation skills and practised making “sensible guesses” using clues, and our current knowledge, to estimate the length and height of objects.

Take a look at our great measuring in action…

Room 7’s Blog

Welcome to Room 7’s blog. We have had a really busy week carving pumpkins, building pyramids and speaking French. Yesterday we had a very special visitor who came to visit the class – Mrs Norton’s niece, Robyn, came to see us to tell us all about what it is like to live and go to school in France. She even helped us with some French words.

R – I’m really jealous of her country

H – A new visitor came in and she was very fun to play with and her name was Robyn.  We learned some French words to say to her and Mrs Norton got it all wrong!

B – I liked when Robyn taught us some French words.

H – I liked it when we carved the pumpkins with Mrs Calder.

C – I liked it when Robyn came over.

N – I liked it when Robyn showed us all her pictures and told us all about where she lived.

I – I loved when Robyn came over. It was the best time ever.

E – I liked it when Robyn came over and I liked watering the plants and giving them a health check.

A – I liked when Robyn showed us all the pictures.

From next week Ms O’Brien will be with the class on Friday afternoon and Mrs Norton will be in class all day Tuesday. There are no changes to PE days.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Room 24

On our residential in September, some of us got to try Pickleball and it was so much fun! It’s a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong. We’ve been lucky enough to borrow some Pickleball equipment, thanks to our active schools coordinator, and we were able to start working on our skills this week. Take a look at some of the photos to see us in action!

Room 20 Update

It’s been a busy first week back in Room 20 after the October holiday.

We’ve started our new topic ‘The History of Scotland’.  We selected key events from Scotland’s past to create a timeline.  We went as far back as the eruption of the volcano where Edinburgh Castle now sits, right through to the newest First Minister being selected this year.

We have started to learn some old Glaswegian songs.  This week, we learned ‘The Jeely Piece’ song which is all about children who moved out of the tenements of Glasgow and into high rise flats.  They were not happy to miss out on their extra meal of a ‘piece flung oot the windae’.

In Maths, we are continuing to develop our addition skills.  We are able to add numbers up to 1,000,000 using the written method and also learned about adding numbers with up to 3 numbers after the decimal point.

We’ve started reading our new group reading books this week too.  One group are reading ‘Saving Finnegan’ and the other is reading ‘The Fox Girl and the White Gazelle’.  This week we looked at the cover and blurb to think of prior knowledge and to make predictions.  We also started visualisations of the characters in each book.

In PE, we’ve started learning about Volleyball with Mr JC.  We learned about the ‘ready position’ and how to serve underhand.

With Mr. MacKay, we have started hockey and how to dribble and pass.

We are looking forward to another great week next week.

Room 14 Autumn Art

Hi,

We’re Esme and Blair! Earlier this week Miss Kennedy asked us to write a blog post.  Miss Kennedy said it will help us to plan this term’s learning. So it’s time to start this blog post!

In room 14 we have been doing a lot of things linked to autumn and made a spider diagram about autumn!

Nature Art Work

We learned about a British artist called, Andy Goldsworthy. He uses nature to create pieces of artwork and sculptures. We decided to go on a nature walk and collect some of the things he uses. We collected twigs, leaves, stones and grass. We tried to vary the colours and sizes of the things we collected. Some people created designs and then made a tree or a person/face. Some even created, ’emotion’ faces. We absolutely loved the results and even got a comment from Mrs Meechan, our headteacher. We have added a photo of the display in the corridor outside our classroom.

Here are a few comments about the art work…

“I really enjoyed the nature walk. It was so fun.”

“I liked making a tree using the things I found.”

“I’m so happy with how it turned out.”

“I made an angry face by pointing the twigs downwards”

Room 9 Pyramids & A Mummy

We have had a super first week back after the October Week.

In literacy we were learning about adverbs, these help us to get extra information about a verb. We even got to use them in our writing. For writing we had to write instructions for how to create a mummy. Our instructions were very good because we got to try it out with one of the boys in our class. Can you guess who it was from the photo below?

Today we all got the chance to be engineers from the Ancient Egyptians. We got to choose which material we could use to build a pyramid. Some of us used Knex, another group used Lego and the last group used sticks and sweets. We promise that none of us ate any sweets but we are not sure if Mr Allen kept some for himself.
