Newton Farm Primary School and Nursery Class

Our Week in Room 21

March 15, 2024 by Miss Napier | 0 comments

This week has been the busiest week yet!

We’ve been completing different ‘British Science Week’ activities like studying velocity and taking part in experiments with balloons. Miss Napier also set us the challenges to make the longest length of unbroken paper we could using only a paper plate and a sheet of A3 paper. We had to communicate as teams before cutting the plates and paper, otherwise we’d lose the challenge! The longest piece of paper was 11 metres long!

In PE, we chose to play rounders. P6s vs P7s in the class. The P6s won both games!

We created our own clay sculptures after studying ‘The Thinker’ by Auguste Rodin. We took pictures of some poses, recreated them with the clay and then named them things like ‘The Daydreamer’ and ‘The Haaland.’

On Wednesday, some of the P7s went on an outing to Bothwell to meet Rt Rev Sally Foster-Fulton, the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. There was around 200 other pupils from Lanarkshire schools there who listened to her speak and answer questions about her job.

We’ve been taking a look at discursive writing lately and this week we discussed Banksy and whether or not we think he is an artist or a vandal. As a class, we decided he was a little bit of both!

The P7s also took part in the Easter Code project on Thursday. The chaplaincy team came to take it and it was an interesting afternoon!

Upcoming Special Events

Dear parents/carers,

On Thursday 21st March we will be celebrating world downs syndrome day by taking part in the “Lots of Socks” campaign. We are encouraging children and staff to choose some socks that are going to get noticed! They might be mismatched socks or your craziest and most colourful socks, whatever takes your fancy!

During week beginning 25th March we will be taking part in Autism Acceptance week. During this week children will be learning about Autism Awareness in their classrooms. We would like to invite parents and carers into the school on Wednesday 27th March at 2pm for a coffee afternoon, donations will be accepted for NAS (National Autistic Society). On Thursday 28th March we are asking children and staff to come to school as colourful as possible, you may want to choose one colour or dress in every colour of the rainbow.

This year we are supporting Kilbride Hospice. Faye Armitage from the hospice is coming in to school to speak at assemblies during week beginning the 13th May. The following week she will be coming back to school during health week and bringing the hospice mascot, Hope. On Thursday 23rd May we will be taking part in Hospice Heroes Day, which is a day for the pupils to celebrate the heroes in their life, whether it is a superhero, family member, celebrity role model or character! Staff and pupils are invited to bring in a donation for the Hospice in return for dressing up as their hero! Faye asked me to let parents know about an event they have coming up called, “Jog with Your Dog” I have attached a poster with further information.

Week beginning 20th May is also health week, look out for further announcements.

Lots to look forward to and celebrate.

Fun on the Farm 🐄🐎🐖🐔

Yesterday Room 6 had a FANTASTIC trip to the Museum of Rural Life. We enjoyed every second and have already been asking to go back. We have been speaking out our favourite parts of the trip and there have been so many.

To start the day, we got the bus and arrived at 10am. When we got there, we had our snack and then completed a quiz while wandering around the museum. There was so many interesting objects and lots of machinery to see that had been used  on farmland across time.

After we had finished in the museum we split into two groups. One group walked up to the farm on the farm trail while the other group got to ride on the tractor. On the way back we swapped. It was so much fun!

At the farm we had a walk around the farm house and had a hunt for the hidden cows in each room. We enjoyed looking at the different items and furniture in this house and discussing what was the same to our houses and what was different. We also had a tour round the farm and got to see chickens, pigs, calves, horses, sheep and highland cows. Some of us even got to see piglets that had only been born a week ago!

We made our way back from the farm and had lunch then we went for a wee chill in the cinema room where they were playing a film about farming across time. To finish up the day, we joined with Room 5 and had a super time in the play park. We were all very tired by the end of the trip but had such an amazing day. Have a look at some of our photos below.
