Recently in Room 13 we have been learning about the Vikings!
Before we began our learning the pupils made a list of what they wanted to learn about the Vikings! This has been the basis of our learning.
One of the first questions we had was how do we know about the Vikings seen as they lived so long ago! So we learnt about the role of an archaeologist and how they help us learn about the past. We then became our own archaeologists! We dug items out of the sand and logged a description of each item.
One of the other things the pupils wanted to learn about was what the Vikings looked like and what they wore. We researched what warriors wore and created our own designs and diagrams of a warrior. We then learnt about what most Vikings wore everyday. We compared how these clothes were made and what they were made of to the clothes we wear today. It was clear that lots of materials we have today weren’t available to the Vikings. Some colours weren’t even available!
We looked at different materials under the microscope and compared them.
Next we conducted an enquiry into what natural dyes work best on clothes. We dyed the same material in things like onion skins and blackberries, just like the Vikings would have done ! Look at the results!
Then we looked at how they made their clothes. We learnt how to weave using simple looms and some wool. It was tricky at first but we all now love it!
We plan to continue this and learn how to sew next!
