SVQ: Career Pathways (MA)

Modern Apprenticeships

Modern Apprenticeships offer people aged over 16 the chance of paid employment combined with the opportunity to train for jobs at different levels. They are an exciting way of gaining skills and nationally recognised qualifications that help kick-start a career without having to study full-time. More than 12,000 businesses employ 34,000 Modern Apprentices in a wide range of sectors, making a valuable contribution to Scotland’s economy.

The Modern Apprenticeship Programme provides you with practical work experience whilst undertaking a nationally recognised qualification at a higher level. During your training you will be paid a wage, which will comply with national minimum wage requirements.

Foundation Apprenticeships

A Foundation Apprenticeship is usually started in S5 or S6 and develops knowledge and understanding of an industry. Alongside this, learners also spend time with a local employer to gain valuable industry experience.

Foundation Apprenticeships are completed alongside other subjects like Nationals and Highers. They are linked to the growth sectors of the Scottish economy.

Testimonials from previous Modern Apprentices working in care:

“It sets you up, it prepares you. You’ve got good support from the Assessors and if there’s anything wrong or you’ve got any concerns within your workplace they are there to speak to. Throughout the whole thing you’re working, learning and developing the whole time, all in one. It’s a really good pathway into social care if you do want to progress. I think I’m one of the youngest seniors so doing it really does open up doors for you.” (Samantha)

“When I started my apprenticeship there were three of us here and we met with our mentor once a week, anything we wanted to bring up we could, and she supported us. Being on the job and doing it is much easier, you’re writing about your practice and things you’ve done. I don’t have a background working in care but I have a background in caring for family. Seeing it in a professional setting was good – things you could or couldn’t do or you’d have to do much differently.” (William)
