Our school library offers a welcoming and supportive environment for all pupils to access a wide range of books and digital resources. We stock an up-to-date collection of fiction and non-fiction books, magazines, quick reads, large-print books, comics, graphic novels and careers information.
We have a dedicated section for dual language material and books in a variety of languages. eBooks and eAudiobooks are available via the Glasgow Libraries app and can be accessed on pupil iPads or personal devices.
All of our S1 to S3 pupils have regular library periods during English lessons. Pupils are encouraged to borrow books for personal reading and are rewarded for their effort with bronze, silver and gold awards as part of our Reading Olympics scheme. S1 pupils receive a library induction at the beginning of the year and support is available to all year groups with research projects and reading recommendations.
The library is open three days a week, before and after school and at lunchtime. As well as supporting the curriculum, the library offers a safe space to socialise and take part in lunchtime clubs, activities, quizzes and competitions. Pupils also have the opportunity to learn new skills by volunteering as a Pupil Librarian.
Our School Librarian organises events to coincide with national and international reading initiatives like Book Week Scotland, The First Minister’s Reading Challenge, National Poetry Day and World Book Day. Every June we celebrate reading and literacy throughout the whole school with Hillpark Book Week.
Book Week events include author visits, competitions, trips out of school and an opportunity to recognise the achievements of pupils who have taken part in the Hillpark Reading Olympics. Other library projects include our EAL reading group and the Words that Burn inter-schools poetry competition.
