History

Everybody is interested in their past. The study of people in the past is exciting in itself, but it also helps us understand the world we live in today. Just as your relationship with the people around you is shaped by your and their actions in the past, so our life in Scotland and our relations with countries all over the world is formed in the same way. We all have our own History.

Why Study History?

History is interesting for its own sake and the course is designed to equip you with the skills you need in life – what are called “transferable skills”. In S3 you will build on the skills you have already begun to develop in S1 and S2 (and earlier), and learn some new ones. Your skills in literacy and numeracy will develop as you analyse historical evidence offered to you, and you present the findings of your research. You will develop your thinking skills as you look at important issues, and try to understand why people in the past acted as they did. You will even become skilled in trying to work out when and why people might not be telling the whole truth! You will also learn to work with others in the class, and use your imagination. An important aim of the course is to make you more confident in your own abilities to work things out for yourself.
