New Kit for our Football Team

Our senior football team will be heading to Dundee on Wednesday of next week to compete in the North Finals of the Scottish Schools Soccer Sevens. They will be participating this year in brilliant new kit sponsored by John Maciver and Sons Crane Hire. We’d like to thank them for their kind sponsorship of the team. Mrs Maciver visited the school today to present the boys with the new kit.

In addition to this sponsorship, the team have received financial contributions from Sgoil a’ Bhac Parent Council, Back Football and Recreation Club, Loch a Tuath News and Back Community Council. Thank you everyone for your support of the team and we wish them the best of luck in next week’s competition.

EuroQuiz 2015

A team of P6 pupils from Sgoil a’ Bhac were competing today in the Western Isles heat of the annual EuroQuiz competition. This year, eight teams from across Lewis, Harris and the Uists went head-to-head in the quiz that tests their knowledge of European geography, culture, history and language as well as the European Union.

The Sgoil a’ Bhac team did superbly well again this year, performing strongly in all the rounds. They finished in second place, just a few points behind Sgoil an Rubha. As the top two teams, they went head-to-head in the final, which Sgoil an Rubha went on to win 10-5.

Congratulations to the team from Sgoil an Rubha! This was the second year in a row that we’ve finished as runners-up in the competition.

Easter Assembly – 20th March 2015

We will be holding a special Easter assembly in conjunction with Back Free Church on Friday 20th March. This assembly will take place at the church at 11.00am. We would like to extend a warm invitation to parents and families to join us for this service.

The service will take place at 11.00am to allow for children to participate with classes in observing the solar eclipse that morning.

Red Nose Day Fun

The pupils and staff of Sgoil a’ Bhac had great fun marking Red Nose Day today. As well as selling red noses and dressing up for the day, we held a bake sale and had a Staff v Pupils football match. The staff won the day with a close 5-4 victory!

Thank you to everyone who contributed time, effort, baking and money today. We’ll announce a total early next week wen all the money has been counted.

EP7 Fair-trade Hamper

The children in EP7 have created a beautiful hamper full of Fair-trade goodies as part of their learning during Fair-trade Fortnight.  This is an enterprise project that also ties in with their social studies topic on the rainforest.  Letters have been sent home with children today that allow parents and others to purchase tickets.  They will also be on sale to children during morning break in the crush hall.  The tickets cost £1 per strip, with all profits going to the Fair-trade Foundation.  We would like to thank everyone in advance for supporting our enterprise.

Thank you Parent Council

The school has recently benefitted from several financial donations from our Parent Council to go towards the purchase of new equipment and the support of pupil activities. Part of this donation came from the proceeds of the hugely successful summer fun day held last year that was so week supported by the whole community.

The Parent Council has made donations to the value of £2148.00 for the following:

  • Paying the cost of buses for the pantomime
  • A subsidy of £1 per pupil towards panto ticket cost
  • MPLC licence to view films/DVDs in schools
  • Six new digital cameras with memory cards and cases
  • 40 high-quality headphones for computers and listening activities
  • A3 laminator for Sgoil Araich
  • 144 new books for the school’s core reading scheme to replace lost and damaged books
  • Financial contribution to travel costs for P7 trip

Bethesda Hospice

Last week, we had a visit from Mr DR Macdonald from Bethesda Hospice to collect a cheque for £428.38.

This was a presentation of the funds raised at Christmas time through the raffle of the cake made by our former cook, Mary Stewart and from the silver collection on the concert night.

We’d like to thank everyone who gave so generously to this cause.

With the help of Mrs Macrae, pupils organised a non-uniform day and bake sale in aid of the ‘God is Good’ nursery school in Uganda.

Ishbal Mackenzie came to the school to collect a cheque for £245.40 for their appeal to support the Ugandan school.

Once again, we’d like to thank the children and parents who contributed to this very worthy cause.
