During work experience I spent time at STV and a digital radio station called Go Radio. In STV I shadowed both the sales team and the news team as they are both professions that I’m interested in. With the sales team I visited the STV boardroom and learned how to deliver a sales pitch to clients. My mentor Stephen gave me lots of tips and tricks on how to do a successful pitch and then I tried doing it myself using the presentation equipment. I also attended meetings with the clients that he has as well as a video editing company that does lots of TV ads. From this I learned how the business works and how to successfully sell advertising space and make adverts.
With the news team I shadowed the STV sports reporter who introduced me to the team and explained everyone’s role. I had a walk through in the studio where I was shown how it worked as well as this I sat in the gallery and helped while the news was being presented to see how the backstage part worked. I also helped plan the show and learned how to use the software that is used to make every STV news report plan.
At Go Radio, which is a brand new digital radio station for Glasgow, I spent time with the morning show and the lunchtime show presenters and helped plan next week’s running order of the show and picked out songs to play. I also typed and printed up stories for the presenters. Later on at Go radio I also learned how to download music on the system as well as how to record tunes.
From my time at work experience I realised that working in the media is a stressful job however my time at STV and Go Radio has only inspired me more to work in the media either behind the scenes or in front of the camera.
