P6/7 Visit Whitelee Windfarm to learn about Wind Energy

IMG_7860

P6/7 have been learning about renewable and non-renewable energy.  We knew that wind was a source of renewable energy as there is always going to be wind!  To learn more about wind turbines, we took a trip to Whitelee Windfarm and learned all about how the wind turbines work and how they produce electricity which helps to power just under 300,000 homes in one year!  That’s a lot of renewable energy.

After completing a workshop where we measured our own wind energy, we visited turbine 41 and braved the wind to feel the blades flying past us.  We then visited the exhibition and played lots of activities which tested our ability to make our own wind power.

Thank you for having us.  We loved our trip to Whitelee and have learned lots about wind energy.

Eco Committee Litter Campaign

ALThe Eco committee made a power point on the importance of picking up litter.  We went round all the classes and presented it to all the pupils and teachers. We are going to make a chart and monitor the playground to see if the litter is going to increase or decrease. Hopefully this school will soon be a litter free school.

Sun, Moon and Stars

spacePrimary 2/3 are now currently learning about space and what travels round the earth. The subject was science included with space. We learned how the earth travels round the sun and how the earth travels round the moon. We acted it out and got given a planet, some stars, the sun, the moon and the earth. We learned this in four different groups of three.   The name of the groups were moon groups.

By Zara Primary 3

I enjoyed this topic because I read a book before this topic and now I know much more about space. Zara P3

I learned that the sun doesn’t move but the earth and the moon turns around in a circle. Eilidh P2

It takes a whole year for earth to go around the sun and the moon goes around the earth. Heather P2

Uplawmoor In Lego

In technologies,  P4/5 have been learning about the village of Uplawmoor. We enjoyed creating Lego models of houses and landmarks such as the hotel, church and school.  We learned about all of the important places in Uplawmoor and built a mini version of the village out of Lego.

I enjoyed making houses and buildings out of Lego. Arrah  P5

Last night we had a spooky Halloween party with all staff and pupils, advertised by posters we made and displayed all around the school. There were parades for each stage group and also for the teachers and parents. Winners were Jack, Primary 1 who was a sneaky ninja. The Primary 2 winner was Rowan who dressed up as a vicious Viking.  Our Primary 3 winner was Eva who was the little orphan Annie from the old movie. Our fluffy Primary 4 winner was Ruby as a cuddly, pink fluffy unicorn. Our terrifying Primary 5 winner was Gabriel as a headless boy on a plate of cabbage. Primary 6 winner was Cameron as a street wise gangster and last, but not least, our Primary 7 winner was our freaky Frankenstein aka Annabelle. We would like to give the PSA and teachers a huge thank you for all the work they put in for the scary but fabulous Uplawmoor Primary Halloween disco 2015.

Ci piace la pizza!!

Yes, primary 6/7 certainly do ‘love pizza’!   Especially home made pizza, the Italian way!class

As part of our Europe topic, we visited Italy today and made our own pizzas from scratch!

The boys and girls had a great time listening to ‘O sole Mio’ as we kneaded our dough and chose our favourite pizza toppings.  We all sat down together like a big Italian family and had lunch (with a wasp who decided to join us!)

In the afternoon, we enjoyed some French treats whilst watching a movie.  We had some crêpes and French brioche dipped in hot chocolate.

Today, the children worked so well independently and collaboratively.  They even did all the tidying up!  Well done P6/7.

Uplawmoor Pupils are learning about ‘You and Flu’

As part of the Health and Wellbeing programme across the school we have been working on the ‘You and Flu’ programme from NHS Scotland with Miss Bradley.   In primary 1 to 3 pupils have been learning about how easily flu germs can spread and the importance of hand washing to prevent this. The made a ‘Hand Washing Pledge’ which is now on display in their classrooms.

In primary 4/5 pupils have been comparing the symptoms of cold and flu and can explain the main differences between them. Our Primary 6/7 pupils have been learning all about the flu immunisation and have been researching both the arguments in favour of the flu immunisation and those against and will use their findings to contribute to a debate on the following statement ‘The more people who are immunised against flu, the less likely everyone is to get flu.’

Eco Assembly “Think Green”

IMG_6421By Adam Pollok

Today two people who worked for Think Green came in to tell us about electricity and WEEE.   Adam and Michelle came to tell us how to save energy and what energy is used for.  They also told us that our rubbish can be recycled to make different forms of energy.

Think Green have launched a competition for the children to design a new mascot for their company.  The old one was called ‘WEEE Wally’.  They said they new one will be called ‘Eddy Electricity’.    We can draw it or make it out of old rubbish!

We encourage the people who read this to save energy for example, turn off lights, ipads and any cookers or ovens when they are not being used.
