Just a little reminder that the school will be closed on Monday the 2nd May. We wish you a pleasant May Day holiday when it comes and we look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday.
Uplawmoor Primary, would like to say thank you to Gordon Steel at the Community Council who came to school on Friday with a very kind monetary donation. Mrs Black from our Fundraising Group and Mr Steel told us of the success of the recent quiz night which was held at the Mure Hall, so we would like to say a huge thank you on behalf of all at Uplawmoor Primary.
The children worked in their houses to complete a technologies and art & design challenge. The upper school had to create a 50cm scaffold out of straws and the lower school were set a task to create a spring mural. The boys and girls worked collaboratively to come up with some wonderful designs. Well done!
Famous landmarks around the world turned off their lights on Saturday night for one hour to mark ‘Earth Hour’.
Earth Hour is an hour every year where people are encouraged to turn off their lights, to raise awareness of environmental issues.
In the UK the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben in London went dark on Saturday evening.
Landmarks like the Sydney Opera House in Australia and the Eiffel Tower in France also turned off their lights.
More than 350 landmarks in 178 countries took part in the event – here is a picture of Big Ben and the Eiffel Tower in total darkness!
The Eco Committee played their part by organising ‘Earth Golden Time’! We came up with 4 activities which were outdoors and did not use any electricity. I chose ‘tent reading’ because it was nice to relax outdoors. We got to sit on cool beanbags and read of chat with our friends. By Mary Bruce P6
Scavenger Hunt (looking for bark, acorns, leaves, wood)
Primary 6 are invited to complete their Bikeability qualification Level 1 and Level 2. The Bikeability trainer will be visiting the school on Wednesday 23rd March and will check everybody’s bikes and helmets.
If there are any problems with bikes and/or helmets these must be rectified before the level 1 training starts on Monday 18th April.
Level 1 Bikeability will be completed in the school playground during week beginning Monday 18th April. The first session will take place on Monday at 2.15pm. Please bring bikes and helmets on that day. The next session will be Thursday at 1.35pm.
Level 2 Bikeability will start on Thursday 28th April which will be ‘on road’ training and helmets and bikes should be brought to school. There will be weekly bikeability sessions which will take place every Thursday at 9.15am. The final test will take place during the end of May/start of June.
We have been working on building electrical circuits in science with Miss Simpson. We can now build circuits using a variety of components and can draw circuit diagrams to represent them.
We carried out an experiment where we built our own batteries out of lemons. We each had a lemon with a copper penny in it and a piece of aluminium foil in it. The penny and the foil represent electrodes of the battery and the lemon represents the electrolyte of the battery.
In batteries a chemical reaction occurs where chemical energy is converted to electrical energy. We tried to light up a bulb using 15 lemons but it did not work because enough electrical energy was not being made in the lemons to light it up.
We changed the bulb to a buzzer and it worked. The lemons had made enough electrical energy to power the buzzer!
It is World Book Day at Uplawmoor Primary School. Miss Miller has been busy organising a fun day of activities and storytelling to celebrate books, illustrators, authors and most importantly, READING!
After a parade of costumes, all of the children voted for their favourite ‘character’ and the winners were as follows:
P1/2 Zoe (Robin Hood)
P2/3 Angelina (Tiger who came to tea)
P4/5 Gabriel (Diary of the Wimpy Kid)
P6/7 Cameron (The Scarecrow from Goosebumps)
Thank you to Mrs Wengel, Mrs McGillivray and Miss Green for coming into school and reading to the children. They thoroughly enjoyed having a new face read to them in class!
World Book Day is a worldwide celebration of books and reading and is marked in over 100 countries all over the world.
Well done to team Uplawmoor who competed in the Primary 6 East Renfrewshire Europe Quiz 2016. They competed against 11 schools and worked together to answer questions about European countries, history, sport, languages and landmarks.
They received a certificate and gained 33 out of a possible 60 (very tricky) questions. Well done to Cameron, Matthew, Adam, Dylan and Ashley.
As part of their topic, Primary 1, 2 and 3 had fun dressing up as scientists and engineers and took a walk around the museum looking at different modes of transport. The children had to decide if they were horse, wind, electric or steam powered. They were allowed to sit in an old-fashioned tram and take a trip on the old style subway.
To top it all off, they had the chance to design their own mode of transport!

Primary 1, 2 and 3 loved having Professor Science come to visit them to tell them all about the sun, moon and stars. We had the chance to explore gravity by catching bubbles and using marbles and feathers to see which would fall to the floor fist. We were very surprised to find out they fall at the same time after watching a slow motion video. We even got to eat donuts after discovering that the universe is in the shape of one!
