Today we welcomed visitors from Education Scotland re our Health & Wellbeing nomination for the Scottish Education Awards 2015. The Scottish Education Awards were first launched in November 2001 by the Scottish Government and the Scottish Daily Record, with the specific aims of celebrating the successes and recognising the achievements taking place within Scottish education.
Our visitors had a tour of the school, met with pupils, staff and parents and had a look at some of our resources to support Health & Wellbeing across the curriculum and at home.
The results will be announced on 10th June at an awards ceremony.
Today we were delighted to have along members of our local community to talk to our pupils about jobs and careers in different companies and services.
The children were very excited to be able to ask our visitors all sorts of questions about life saving, driving motorcycles, working in Asda and looking after animals.
Our lower secondary pupils are looking forward to working with the representatives from Morgan Sindall in the upcoming months visiting their work site and seeing what’s happening with the old school site!
We would like to thank the careers advisors and the representatives from all of the companies who came today for donating their time for our secondary school children. We could not have done it without you!
Take a look at the photographs from the rich learning experience that took place this morning.
Today we welcomed visitors from East Dunbartonshire Council who were visiting the school.
Our Head Boy, Michael and School Captain Jamie, led the tour and introduced them to all the classes and showed them specialist areas, such as the art room, sensory room, spa and outdoor atrium.
Well done to Michael and Jamie for all their hard work today and being great school ambassadors.
Class Tiree and Whalsay took part in a photography project during the 1st school term.
They displayed all the photographs they took and invited their parents into school to view and purchase the portraits.
The class then entered some of the photographs into a competition organised by “Scran”. The competition was held to celebrate Scran’s 20th year and asked schoolchildren to show “What Scotland Means to Me” in a photo.
Class Tiree impressed judges with their group picture and won the additional support needs category. Their image promotes an atmospheric shot, with varied shades of green that invite you to wander down the path and into the woodlands.”
The school and class were delighted when they heard the wonderful news and were so proud of their achievements.
The images will now become records on Scran, sitting alongside material from National Museums Scotland, National Galleries Scotland and the Scotsman newspaper.
This afternoon we welcomed two visitors from Scran, to present the award to class Tiree.
The school has won three iPads for use in its classrooms which I’m sure will allow the pupils to continue to take amazing pictures of their local community and beyond during outdoor learning.
Look out for the framed image next time you visit the school.
Liz Rodger, Activity Project Officer at Rouken Glen Park has arranged for taster sessions specifically for potential volunteers who have additional support needs. In order to help volunteers with additional needs, I am able to offer bespoke environmental training opportunities for these groups of volunteers. Details will be discussed at our Taster Session on Wednesday 29 April.

Where were you when the Solar Eclipse happened……..
This morning some of the classes watched the solar eclipse live on the BBC and some of our senior pupils watched it live from the staffroom – what a perfect end to our incredible science week.
Pupils from St Cadoc’s and Crookfur primary schools have arrived to join in our sporting activities.
A huge range of events are on offer to challenge everyone including dance, athletics, hockey, football with an SFA coach, curling, table cricket, parachute games, cycling and even cheerleading!
Our Active Schools Coordinators are on hand to help us out.
Some of our pupils are taking part in a Careers event today in corporation with the Science Centre allowing them to access some information showcasing what it is really like to work as a scientist, explorer, researcher, or engineer, in one of 100’s of careers in science.
Have a look at the following flyer to see what our pupils will be experiencing during their fun and informative day.
This week we are taking part in Digital Learning Week. Digital learning is an intergral part of learning at isobel Mair and takes place throughout the school day.
The aim of the week is to highlight and publicise the innovative and exciting ways in which digital technologies are being used to support learners in our school.
We use a variety of technologies to support our pupils to make learning fun and interactive. This is a list of some of the technology we will be using during Digital learning week.
On 19 February, we will be holding MAIRtrade, a fairtrade and eco fair.
One of the stalls at the event will be a book swap, which will help to promote the concept of ‘reuse’.
Have a clear out of your book shelf and for every book your child brings in before 19 February, he/she will receive a token. At MAIRtrade, tokens can be swapped for other childrens’ books.
This is a great way to support reading and to keep our bookshelves fresh.
Today we welcomed visitors Eilean Gibson, Jackie Higgins and Douglas McLaren from Scottish Power Retail, Debt Division who came to the school to present a cheque to us. The staff had a raffle prior to the Christmas holidays and the money raised was donated to the school.
Our vistitors joined us for an Experiential Sensory Story “Stig of the Dump” from classes Arran and Cumbrae. After listening to the story our visitors and pupils were encouraged to take part in activities linked to the story and recyling.
We also welcomed 4 children from the Family Centre who are members of the Eco Committee members to take part in our story and activities.
Thank You to everyone for this very kind donation.
Our Head Boy, Michael was delighted to accept the donation on our behalf.
Classes Whalsay, Tiree and Jura have been working on the BBC project, Ten Pieces to inspire young people to get creatvive with classical music.
They have been learning how to make music using parts of their body and simple sounds.
Over the past two months they have composed their own piece of music which was filmed today and will be uploaded to the BBC as part of the Ten Pieces Proms.
They also created a piece of art work as part of this project.
Look out for some budding musicians in the near future!
Classes Arran and Cumbrae have been working on an interactive sensory story “Stig of the Dump”.
During art sessions they have created a large cave as part of their story and have incorporated lots of visual and sound effects using the iPad and mini projector.
They are performing this to some of the classes on Friday, and everyone looking forward to it.
