Special Olympics Assembly

Thank you to Amy Clark, Frances Smiley and Jack Dickson for coming to school and sharing their experiences of being a special Olympian at the games in Abu Dhabi this summer.

They were great sports taking part in our question & answer session. The pupils asked some great questions and were keen to find out more about eating healthy, how many days do they train and how do they go about becoming an Olympian.

Pupils and staff loved chatting with the visitors and having a look and feel of their special medals.

Benjamin’s Buddy Bench

This morning we welcomed the Black family to class Sanda for coffee and the unveiling of Benjamin’s Buddy bench.

The school wanted something to remind them of Benjamin who passed away last year and the buddy bench was suggested by one of the pupils. This was a lovely way to remember Benjamin.

Some of the pupils worked with Mo, our visual artist and decorated the bench leaving a space for Benjamin’s family to contribute.

This morning Mum, Dad and Benjamin’s brother and two sisters all painted a design on the chair to remember him.

I’m sure the children will use the chair for quiet times but the older children know that if a child sits on the chair, they might need someone to help them or to chat to.

Thank You

We were recently the host school for the
International Conference; Embedding Health and Wellbeing Across the Curriculum.

Take a look at some of the comments below from the delegates who took part in the visit and came back to the conference feeling inspired by their experience.

  • They thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the publication ‘50 Things to do Outdoors Before you Leave Isobel Mair School’ which they commented was full of lovely ideas such as ‘laying a stick trail’ or ‘make a driftwood sculpture’.
They were also delighted to be given a copy of the book to take away.
  • The tour of the school by your pupils was also mentioned as a highlight of the visit.
  • The aim of the visit was to allow the delegates to see ‘health and wellbeing in action’ and the visit to Isobel Mair certainly enabled them to do this most effectively.

Tree Planting

Thank you to Edna Campbell, Councillors and other visitors for attending our tree planting event at the school.

We were unable to take the tree from our old school and members from the local community who planted the tree in 1991 wanted to help us plant another one.

This was arranged via Councillor Miller and Head of Environment.

Our Head Boy, Michael di Paola assited Edna in planting the new tree which is next to the tree planted by HRH Prince Edward.

Global Visitors

Global Collaborations

On Friday 12th June we welcomed Dr Kate Hannah, HMIe,  Drs Michelle Meredith and Christina Addlington from the Jamaican Ministry of Education.

After some introductions with Mrs Clark, Mr Crossan and our Head Boy Michael,  our visitors had a tour of the school and visited some to classes to see CfE in action.

We are hoping this will be the start of a Global Collaboration project with some Jamaican schools.

Have a look at our photographs below.

Thank You

Today we welcomed visitors Eilean Gibson, Jackie Higgins and Douglas McLaren from Scottish Power Retail, Debt Division who came to the school to present a cheque to us. The staff had a raffle prior to the Christmas holidays and the money raised was donated to the school.

Our vistitors joined us for an Experiential Sensory Story “Stig of the Dump” from classes Arran and Cumbrae. After listening to the story our visitors and pupils were encouraged to take part in activities linked to the story and recyling.

We also welcomed 4 children from the Family Centre who are members of the Eco Committee members to take part in our story and activities.

Thank You to everyone for this very kind donation.

Our Head Boy, Michael was delighted to accept the donation on our behalf.

“Something Special” with Justin and Isobel Mair School

“Something Special ” with Justin was recently filmed at Isobel Mair School.

Justin worked with pupils from the school and Family Centre and they were so excited………………. but star struck!

Once the filming was finished Justin took some time out to meet the pupils and we even had a photo opportunity.

The premiere of the episode will be shown on Friday 14th December at 9.45am and then repeated again in the afternoon at 1.50pm where we will see some of our stars in action.

You can watch it on BBC or CBeebies website

Olympic Torch comes to IMS

Yesterday we were very fortunate to have a visit from Martin Myers who was one of the Olympic torch bearers. He came along to talk to us about his experience and show off the real Olympic Torch.

Everyone was excited to meet Martin and hear his story, of how he was selected to run with the torch. Afterwards we all got the chance to hold the torch and have our photograph taken.

Click here to read more of Martin’s story.

Royal Visitor

On Tuesday 22nd May 2012 Isobel Mair School welcomed a very special visitor to the school during the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.

Mrs Wallace and  our very own head boy Fabio welcomed His Royal Highness, Earl of Wessex to tour the school and meet all the pupils and staff.

During his tour of the school he visited many of our teaching areas including the hydrotherapy pool, sensory room, adventure room and  then joined class Orkney who had compiled a ”Who wants to be a Royal Millionaire” Diamond Jubilee Quiz on the SMARTBoard showcasing the work they had researched using key points in Her Majesty, The Queen’s life.

The highlight of the tour was a special performance from “Reels on Wheels” our very own wheelchair dancing group and then his Royal Highness officially opened our Jubilee woods, unveiling a plaque to commemorate the work of the pupils in the school and  then planted a tree which will hold special memories for everyone.

It was indeed a very memorable day in the life of Isobel Mair School.
