Create a Smile Campaign

Children 1st has launched a Create a Smile campaign on to ask people to show Scotland’s children they all deserve lives free from abuse and neglect.

Children 1st has a long history of supporting children and families who have experienced or are at risk of abuse and would never underestimate the seriousness of it, or the damaging effects it can have throughout a child’s lifetime. The complex nature of child abuse makes it difficult for many members of the public to see how they can personally make a difference. Through the #createasmile campaign they want to encourage members of the  public to take a small action via social media to show they care about children who have and are experiencing abuse today. They will use this as a starting point to engage the public in a conversation about the many different ways people can support children in Scotland to live free from abuse and trauma.

You can support the campaign by visiting www.createasmile.org.uk  to #createasmile –  and sharing this via your social media platforms.

If you have any questions or would like more information about the campaign, please do not hesitate to contact Policy Manager, Harriet Hall: harriet.hall@children1st.org.uk

Data forms to be returned to school

Primary 1 – 7

Dear Parent / Carer

Many thanks if you have already returned the annual consent form pack to your child’s class teacher.

We had hoped to have all packs returned by Friday 9th September and therefore if you have not returned the pack could you please send this into school tomorrow.

We are also awaiting some flu immunisation forms and if this has not been returned we would again be grateful if this could be sent into school tomorrow.

School Meals Price Increase

Primary School Only

Dear Parent / Carer

It has been brought to our attention that parent / carers may not have been notified by East Renfrewshire Authority that from August 2016 a small increase has been levied to our school meal provision for pupils.  We have been asked to advise you that this is the first increase for two years.

Primary School – main meal £2.00
Primary School – cold lunch £1.90

The authority has advised us that they are in the process of updating the cost on their website.

Pupil Leadership and Voice

At Giffnock Primary, we want our children to have a wide range of learning opportunities and it is very important that they have a variety of ways in which they can participate in the leadership of learning, both within their own classrooms and the wider school community. A broad set of skills for life, learning and work can be developed through such experiences.  The letter below details the various ways in which children can participate:

Pupil Leadership and Voice Sept 2016

New Orchard Park one-way & Academy Road parking

On 17 June the Council approved the making of both the East Renfrewshire Council (Giffnock Area) (On-Street) (Waiting and Loading) Order 2016 and the East Renfrewshire Council (Orchard Park, Giffnock) (One Way) Order 2016. Both of the new traffic regulation orders (TROs) will come into effect 1 August 2016.

Two items affect Giffnock Primary and Nursery:

  • Orchard Park will become a one-way road with traffic only allowed to travel from Academy Road towards Fenwick Road (no more turning onto Orchard Park from Fenwick Rd)
  • New parking restrictions around the school and nursery will largely remain the same but the largest change will be the addition of new yellow line school zig-zags along Academy Road at each the pedestrian crossing build outs

Rocket Seeds from Space

Rocket Science Project

The wait is over… On Wednesday we finally found out that the rocket seeds which were in the blue packet were the ones which were on the ISS! As the Rocket Science team were enjoying rocket ice lollies (of course!) they watched the video of Tim Peake announcing which colour of packet contained the space seeds. You can watch it for yourself by following the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SV6bXBt4Ug0

Result 2

Those you who have followed our updates here will remember that our seedlings from the blue packet did not grow as well as those from the red packet: they were slightly smaller and had fewer leaves. It will be into the new school session before we know the results from the whole experiment and whether or not the differences are significant for plans to grow fresh food in space. If the number of children at our recent Careers Fair saying they want to be scientists is anything to go by, Tim Peake’s mission to inspire the next generation has been a success.

World of Work

On Thursday and Friday last week, Giffnock Primary pupils enjoyed a chance to find out about different types of jobs that you could do. Mr McNeill had arranged for parents to come in to the school and set up a small display so that children could find out about different jobs.  We had a doctor, a civil engineer, a baker, a policeman and lots of others. Children enjoyed themselves visiting the different displays and talking to parents about different jobs. P7 pupils also practised their interview skills on each other!

Giffnock Primary supporting charities

As a school community we support many charities close to the hearts of our children and families.

Diabetes UK

The collection from our Christmas Service went to Diabetes UK. Mrs Kitson received the money at an assembly. Children from the school also took part in a sponsored swim for the Charity.
