maths week scotland

Maths Week Scotland is approaching quickly and I am excited to share a photo competition which you can get involved in now. Maths is creative, all around us and can be beautiful. It is part of our daily life but sometimes we don’t really think about it. Can you and your family see the maths inside everyday objects? Can you see the maths surrounding us in the wild or in our local area? Can you see the maths inside?

We have two categories in the competition:
In The Wild: if you have captured the wild side of maths in nature.
In My Town: if your photo is taken in and around town and celebrates man-made objects.

Each photo requires a title and a commentary (as short as 5 words but no longer than 250 words). Be as creative as you like. Please see our twitter feed and the Maths Inside website for some inspiration for your photographs: http://mathsinside.com/#

Maths Inside is a national photography competition for both primary and secondary children. In Giffnock we will be holding our own competition based on the same categories and will put forward our winners to the national competition. You can enter two photographs, one in each category.

There are two ways in which you can share your photographs with us:
Share your photograph along with the title and caption on your twitter feed @giffnockprimary (you can also use the #mathsinside and #mathsweekscot)

Email your photographs to gn3b@giffnock.e-renfrew.sch.uk remembering to include the title, the caption and your name. These will then be shared on our twitter feed unless you have stated otherwise on the email

Please share your photographs with us by Friday 4th October.
We can’t wait to see how creative you can be with your photos and are really looking forward to seeing maths in daily life through your eyes.

Yours sincerely,
Miss N Stead
Acting Principal Teacher

Spelling homework guidance P2 to P7

We recently shared information relating to homework with you in our latest Newsletter:

Giffnock Newsletter September 2019

In addition, we have put together a set of Spelling Homework Guidelines for all stages between P2 and P7 which link to the spelling words being sent home today (P1 class teachers will be providing different guidance for their children). We hope that these documents will support fun and engaging ways to consolidate learning at home. We will be sending home paper copies of these this week, however as there are website links within these guidelines we wanted to provide you with this here. The link below takes you to our ‘Languages and Literacy’ page on our school website; if you then simply scroll down you will be able to select the relevant link to the Spelling Homework Guidelines for your child’s stage:

As always, we would value any feedback that you have on these and how they are supporting your family in the coming weeks and months.

Making School Food Healthier

Making school food healthier
More fruit and vegetables, less processed red meat
and sugar on the menu.

https://www.gov.scot/news/making-school-food-healthier

The Scottish Government and all local authorities are jointly committed to providing the healthiest food to children and young people. This commitment is underpinned by a duty to provide school meals that meet strict nutritional requirements, including encouraging the use of fresh, local and sustainable produce
School food regulations will be amended to ensure:

A minimum of two full portions of vegetables and a full portion of fruit are offered as part of a school lunch, with full portions of fruit and or vegetables also available in, for example, tuck shops

A minimum weekly amount in the school menu of red and processed red meat provision – such as bacon, ham and pepperoni

For Primary schools – Ensure no more than 175g of red and red processed meat can be provided over the course of the school week, of which no more than 100g should be red processed meat. All of the 175g amount can be used for unprocessed freshly prepared red meat.

This is a new standard and is based on the Scottish Dietary Goal for red and processed meat which is supported by scientific evidence based dietary recommendations to limit intakes of these foods to 70g per day with the purpose of protecting the health of children and young people. Therefore if a child is to have processed meat in their diet this can be managed at home by parents/carers.
Dietary advice highlights red meat as a major source of iron and zinc which can contribute to meeting the recommended nutrient intakes for primary school lunches removal of fruit juice and smoothies from primary and secondary schools to help reduce sugar intake.
The measures follow extensive consultation and advice from a working group comprising health, nutrition and education experts.
https://www.gov.scot/publications/report-responses-consultation-nutritional-requirements-food-drink-schools

Currently all East Renfrewshire school meals are nutritionally analysed and comply with the existing regulations laid down by the Scottish Government.

All medically prescribed diets will be accommodated on receipt of an Acute Services Division referral form from a hospital dietician or a Doctor’s letter detailing dietary requirements.
