This is a range of resources that Leaders could use for expedition training. It does not duplicate the resources that we have put on the DofE Participants’ Page. The material is based mainly on the DofE Expedition pack click here for full details and resources from Lupine Adventure.
Please stay tuned for new Lowland Expedition Leader training dates.

Safety and Supervision – You must follow your employer’s procedures! East Ayrshire DofE expeditions must be planned and approved to the requirements of our general Visit Safety system. The safety of participants is a supervisor’s primary concern on any expedition; good planning and adequate training will minimise risks. The Expedition Supervision Plan must be completed as part of your planning process and attached to your Evolve form.

This first set of resources are general ones that cover all aspects of expedition training.
Aim – All expeditions must have an aim as outlined in The 20 Conditions. Groups often find it difficult to find a worthwhile aim, but a good one can really add to the value of the expedition. Expedition Conditions and Aim ppt
Please look at the East Ayrshire document on aims and a sustainable expedition: Climate Action Plan for Schools
Cooking and Menu Planning
All groups must cook at least one substantial meal a day (that means at least 2 courses).
First Aid – Every child out on an expedition should be able to deliver basic first aid. It might be possible to get volunteers to come and teach first aid for you if you feel your knowledge and experience is not enough.
St John’s Ambulance Lesson Plans
Navigation – This is an enormous topic and will probably take up a large part of your training programme, but there is no doubt that the ability to navigate successfully will make the expedition much more enjoyable and valuable. Nigel Williams, who has years of experience of teaching navigation has produced Practical Ideas for Teaching Navigation which is an excellent place to start looking for ideas.
Here are a few more resources.

Team Building – A key aspect of DofE expeditions at all levels is the opportunity to build and work as a team. There are an enormous number of team building activities available but here are just a few to get you started.
Walking, Kit and Rucsacs – This set of resources look at the Access Code for Scotland and a range of other issues which will affect how easy participants find it to complete their expedition.
