Health Week

What a week Health Week has been! We have been so busy with lots of activities added to our timetables for this week. Have a look at the photos and let us know what you think about our Healthy Lifestyle.

We learned how to play Boccia with Miss Dunlop. It was fun.We got into teams and had to throw our fluff balls into the correct hoops. It was hard.
These are our cress seeds. We took them home to care for them and watch them grow
The men at the Martial Arts Center showed us how they practised using the bags.
Our Fruit Tasting Survey
Mr Roberston taught us how to play football in the P1 playground. We had to dribble and 'dance' with our ball.
Fruit Tasting Everyone Got Orange, Blueberry, Date, Melon, Pineapple, Lemon, Banana
We all played Just Dance on the Wii. It was really good fun but hard work. We were all really hot.
Kara drew a picture of her and Kayleigh in the Dance Studio
Godsfavour drew a picture of himself at the gym punching the punch bag and kicking a Swiss Ball
Bethany drew a picture of herself balancing on a Swiss ball and Ms Connor is helping her to stay on the ball.

A visitor to school

Every day when we come into school we look at our wall to see how many days we have been coming to school. We have now been coming into school for 154 days! That’s a huge number. We have been practising our days of the week too.

We have also been finishing our checkups in maths. We have been showing our teachers if we have remembered all that we have been taught about adding. Some of us have been doing subtraction too.

We have been writing our news about the things we do at home and the things we like to play with in Mrs Munro’s Learning Zone.

Maja painted a picture at the easel and scratched a design of a bird in it. What a great picture Maja.

In P1a1 we have been listening to stories by Julia Donaldson. We can now recognise her stories and illustrations. We also listened to other stories but they were all rhyming stories. We have really loved them.

In P1a2 we have been continuing to have fun in our Baby Clinic. We have been filing out the by writing in the baby’s name, address, weight and length.

Last, but most important! We had a visitor to school this afternoon. Mrs Taylor in the nursery has got a puppy. We were very lucky as she brought it into school to let us see. Hayley is a chocolate brown Labrador. It was so cute! We are looking forward to Mrs Mackay bringing in her dog Lola.

Learning in P1

This week P1a2 have been playing in the Baby Clinic. This is our new role play area. We did a mind map of all our ideas for the area. We are enjoying looking after the babies, giving them injections and weighing and feeding them. In the water tray we are bathing the babies to make sure they are clean.

We have been learning about subtraction. We used our whiteboards to write take away sums and used the kiddy counter people to help us.

In P1a1 we have been learning about the different parts of the United Kingdom. We coloured them in in different colours to show we knew which was Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales.

We have been looking at our sounds again to see if we can remember them. Remember to keep looking at your sound book at home to practise all your sounds. We have been looking at the oi ue ou sounds and have been practising them in class too.

In the Active Learning Zone we have been lucky to get a Promethean Board. We have  been drawing pictures of ourselves using ActivInspire. We also made funny faces on our class photos. Some of us thought this was really funny!

Learning about Weight and Dens Road Gym

This week we have been learning about weight and capacity in maths. We have used scales to weigh things to find out which is the heaviest and lightest. We have used words like heavy, light, heavier, lighter, heaviest and lightest. We used lots of every day items you might find in the cupboard to find out which is the heaviest and lightest.

In the water tray we have been experimenting with capacity by filling up things in the water tray and sand tray. We have used words like full, nearly full, half full, nearly empty and empty. We coloured in a sheet to show what we had learned.

DENS ROAD GYM

In our Gym we have been learning what you need to do to join the Gym. At the Busy Bee table we all filled in a Gym Membership Form. We had to put lots of information about ourselves on it and some of us looked in the mirror to remind ourselves what colour  of eyes and hair we had. We even stood on the scales to weigh ourselves for our forms. At the making table we made Gym Membership cards and Mrs Munro laminated them so they look just like a real card. We keep them in the Gym for when people come in. We have put up a display or all our ideas for setting up our Gym and have began to do exercise sheets and dance classes in it.

We have been keeping fit with the Wii too. We play a game called FIT which we borrowed from the nursery. We play with Dora and Diego and the Backyardigans. We have to pogo jump and hula hoop. Four of us can go on at a time and we take turns to hold the Wii remote. We collect medals if we do a good job and everyday we keep a tally of all the medals we collect.

Visit to the Gym

We are learning all about ourselves and keeping healthy. We will be looking at lots of different Health and Wellbeing experiences and outcomes from Curriculum for Excellence. We will be visiting different places in Dundee which can help us keep healthy. In the Active Learning Zone we will be setting up our own gym. We were very lucky because Ms Connor goes to Energie Fitness Clubs in Main Street and she organised for us to visit to see what it looks like in a gym.

We had to walk to to Main street and used all the things we learned during Walkwise lessons to help us. When were in the Gym P1a2 had Joe to help us and P1a1 had Craig to show us round. We saw reception, a small gym, the sauna and steam room, the big gym and the room with all the mirrors where they do classes. We were allowed to try out some of the machines and we took lots of pictures with the digital camera and lots of videos with the flip cam. We took a clip board and pencils and wrote down lots of things we saw to give us ideas on what we will put in our own gym.

When we were back in school we looked at all our photos and videos and made a list of all the things we would like to put in our Gym. Next week we will start to get our gym ready to work in. We have decided we will have a reception area and we will think about the exercises we can do in our gym because it won’t be big enough for lots a machines like Energie!

A big thank you to everyone at Energie Fitness Clubs for all their help.

Games Based Learning with Yogi Bear

In Primary 1 we have been learning about Goldilocks and the Three Bears in class. In the Active Learning Zone with Mrs Munro we have been using Yogi Bear to help us learn.

The Active Learning Zone has a Wii (from Mrs Munro’s house) and we have been using the Yogi Bear game from the recent film to help us learn in lots of different ways. The area was set up with comfy camping chairs and netting to make it look like a forest.

We were introduced to the game and we decided on rules when using the Wii. This is a one player game but we are allowed two people on it at a time. Only one person holds the Wii remotre. We take turns when playing it. We have to help each other. Collect cherry pies and watch out for porcupines. Our name was scored off on the list once we had a turn. But once everyone had a go then Mrs Munro cleaned off the name list and then we were allowed an0ther turn.

We were able to practise writing about Yogi bear at the writing table. The writing table was beside the Wii area so it was easy for us to go and write about Yogi after we had a turn. We wrote the names of the things we saw in the game and spoke to each other about it. We used the Yogi Bear writing card to help us with the words. There was paper with Yogi Bear drawings too that we could use.

We also liked to draw pictures and asked mrs Munro to display our work on the wall.

After a little while we were given a Yogi Bear book to write or draw our ideas and thoughts about Yogi Bear. What he did in the game and how we helped our friends. After we had a turn we would go with our partner and write or draw in the book together. This is some of our writing. This writing was written with very little or no support from an adult.

We have loved using Yogi Bear to help us learn. What will be our next game? Wait and see!

Bear Sock Puppets

This week we have been busy making sock puppets.Mrs Munro brought in a sock puppet Hugh made at his art class and we decided we would love to make a sock puppet too. We had to stuff a sock with lots of stuffing and put elastic bands on it for his arms and legs. We had to colour him in using pens. We still have to finish them off but we think they are looking really cute.

In the classrooms we have been using our cameras and flipcams to take photos and videos of our learning. In P1a2 we have a special silver hat we were when it is our turning to record the learning that is taking place in the classroom.

In maths we have been adding. Some groups have been adding two numbers together and some have been adding three numbers together. We like using the dice to help us add.

We have been learning Goldilocks and the three bears songs at school too.

Look out for our Target and achievement sheets that will be coming home soon. We have been talking with our teachers about the things we are good at and the things we need to try harder with.

Next week P1a2 have a film crew coming to visit. We have been watching Talkie Time from BBC Learning Zone in class. The film crew are coming to film us while we watch new Talkie Time films to see if the stories are good. Have a look at Rod here. We love him. He is really funny. We thought it was just like Skype or Glow Meet.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears at Dens Road

This week we have began looking at Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We are going to be doing a lot of our learning through bears and Goldilocks. First we had to listen to the story and we had to plan what we wanted to have in our home corner. We drew pictures and wrote down all the things we heard in the story that we would need.

Then we had to cut out pictures from the story and put them into order. We had to try and sound out the words to help us decided where our pictures would go.

We can practise putting the story in the correct order.

As part of our homework we had to draw the favourite part of the story.

Baby bear says "someone is in bed".

In the class we have a sorting activity where we have to read the words and organise the pictures.

Goldilocks sorting activity

At the writing table we have lots of different sheets to help us write about our topic.

Goldilocks is bad and cheeky.

In the class we are also starting one of our favourite activities. We have to Write the Room by going round the room and finding all the Goldilocks and the Three Bears words that are hidden.

Write the Room activity with our special pointing finger.

In the Active Learning Zone we are also learning about bears and Goldilocks. We have puppets at the puppet theatre, a Goldilocks mat and a beautiful Goldilocks at the BeeBot.  We also have a bear interest table and bear number games to play on the computer to help us with our numbers ( http://www.topmarks.co.uk/PlayPop.aspx?f=TeddyNumbersv2 ).

Bears interest table.

We also have a Wii now and are learning how to play Yogi Bear. We have to share with our friend and help each other when we get stuck.

Yogi Bear is on the Wii and we are ready to learn.

We  also have a Jellystone Park. Here we have to share with our friends and think about the kind of healthy food we would put in our picnic basket.

Jellystone Park

At the library area we have a Goldilocks book and Mrs Munro has recorded the story of Goldilocks onto the MP3 player. We can sit here and listen to the story.

Goldilocks on the MP3 player.

Lastly we have our new Teddy Toy Shop. Here we are learning to recognise coins. We also have to remember to take turns so everyone can have a turn at being the shop keeper. We all like to be the shop keeper. We have lots of teddies for sale and have to remember to put the bar codes on our teddies before we put them on the shelf for sale.

Please leave a comment about our learning this week as we love to hear what you think.

We’ve had visitors!

Both P1a1 and P1a2 have had visitors to their classrooms! Read on to find out what has been happening…..

P1a1  – Tallulah the Toucan

One morning we came into school and Tallulah was there. We had left the window open overnight and she had flown in. She made her nest on the seat. She made her nest from the basket. Tallulah is a Toucan and she is from South America. She normally lives in a big hole in a tree in the rainforest. She has been playing in our classroom. She went in the sand pit, she played on the door, she flew up to the chinese lanterns and she was hanging on! Kayleigh made a post card for Tallulah. Dyaln wrote a story for Tallulah. Samuel drew a picture of Tallulah when she was in the rainforest. He found a song about Toucans on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKkG8Xbb8Fc&feature=player_embedded All the class made words to describe Tallulah on Comic Life in the ICT suite. We are all loving having Tallulah in our classroom. Tallulah likes going on adventures and we think she might be going on one this weekend!

P1a2 – Idris the Dragon

We came into school one morning and we found Idris the Dragon. He is a boy dragon from Wales. He was sitting in his nest. When we first met him he was shy. He Put his head up and down because he was scared of us. He is a baby dragon and his is red and gold and green and yellow. He has wings and little spikes or prickles. He only breathes smoke because he is a baby but he is not allowed to breathe smoke in school because he will set the alarm off. He is only allowed to breathe smoke outside. He likes cuddling into his basket but when we are not in school he likes to fly about the class and play. He likes playing at the computer and in the school corner. Sometimes he flies out of school at night and comes back with things for his basket. He likes things that are gold and one day we came back to find lots of gold things there. He likes to go on lots of adventures and he is thinking of going to Africa! He might be going tonight! Miss Davies read us a story about dragons and we make postcards for Idris and write him letters and write stories about him. We have been drawing our own dragons too and thinking of words to describe them.

Chinese New Year

This week we have been learning through the Chinese New Year. In our classes we have a Chinese Restaurant where we took turns to serve meals to our friends. In the water tray we had noodles in the water. We had to try and pick the noodles up with chop sticks. It was really difficult! We made lovely Chinese lanterns which are up in our classroom. We also made an amazing Chinese Dragon on a huge display in the dinner hall. In the Active Learning Zone we played the memory game. We had to remember chop sticks, a rabbit (because it is the year of the rabbit), noodles, a Chinese dragon, Chinese lanterns and Chinese plates. We are able to play the memory game without an adult to help us now. We had adding homework with Chinese dragons to help us count. (Really sorry! Mrs Munro has forgotten to bring the camera home so the photographs won’t go on the blog until Tuesday.)

Dylan made a fab Chinese Dragon.
We had noodles in the water tray and had to pick them up with chip sticks.
Both classes had a Chinese Restaurant.
