Christmas is coming……

We have been super busy this week getting ready for our Christmas fayre.  All our crafts look beautiful and we have our fingers crossed that we will raise lots of money for our school.

We made our own price labels for everything on our stalls.

We made Snowmen Advent calendars and will have to remember to move the number along one every day until Christmas.

In Primary 1a2 we have made Charlie Cook’s Reading Nook as part of our Julia Donaldson book study.  We picked out our favourite bits from Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book and used it to help us plan and make our reading nook.

Animals and authors!

This week we have been studying the author Julia Donaldson. Everyday we looked at two books by the lady who wrote the Gruffalo and we talked about what we liked about each one. Then we used the Activexpressions to vote for our favourite one. Some of the books had a Gruffalo sticker on them and we learned that these books were written after The Gruffalo.  We also noticed that pictures of the Mouse, the Squirrel and the Owl were in a lot of the other books.  We had fun trying to find them.

In number work we are learning how to add up.  We now know the number stories to 5.  We have been using the counting people and dalmatians maths box to help us.

We have been super busy adding sound to our Gruffalo films.  We worked together in groups to record what each character said in the story.  It was really funny listening to our recorded voices.  When all the groups are finished we are going to have a movie afternoon and watch each others films.

We have been busy making some beautiful crafts for the Christmas fayre next week. We hope that lots of people will come along and buy things from the Primary 1 stall.  Have a look at some of the things we will be selling.

There was a lot of excitement in Primary 1 yesterday as we had a visit from Zoolab.  Lots of animals came to see us and we were allowed to touch or stroke them.  We found out lots of information about the animals.  Some of us found a few of the animals a little scary but we were super brave.

Adding, rhyming and fun for Children in Need.

We have been doing lots of adding up this week. It was a little bit tricky at first but we have had lots of fun and can now add up to the story of 3. We used the ladybird and dalmatian maths boxes to help us.

This week we began using our models of the Gruffalo characters to make a film. We worked in groups setting up our film sets, camera and tripod and next we will be recording the story using our voices.

We have used Pivot again this week and were able to add another Pivot character and make them dance. It was so funny watching each others sequences. We have also been using Hector’s world to help us learn how to stay safe when we are using computers.

We have used the Gruffalo story to help us learn all about rhyming words. Some of the rhyming words we found are mouse and house, wood and good, said and sped, claws and jaws, toes and nose and see and me.

We have had a Children in Need day at school to raise lots of money. This year the theme was Show Your Spots, Lets Raise Lots! We came to school wearing spotty clothes and had fun playing spotty bingo and the tuck shop had a yellow spotty theme.

Money, Money, Money and Marvellous Models Too

MONDAY 14th NOVEMBER 2011 WE HAVE 5000 FOLLOWERS TODAY! Thank you to everyone who follows us and leaves us clever comments, we love reading them.

What a fun and busy time we have been having in Primary 1.  We have been learning all about money this week and set up a Gruffalo food shop.  We take it in turns to be the shopkeeper and the customers.

We have also been reading detectives this week looking for words in the Gruffalo story.  We used different coloured pencils to show all the words we found.  We then showed our learning partner.  It was fun and we are all super detectives.

We have been enjoying all our learning around the story of The Gruffalo and this week we made models of the characters from the story.  We are going to use the characters to make a film which we are all very excited about.  We are sure you will agree that our models are fantastic.

After all of our Halloween fun last week we were left with some pumpkins and we used them to become Super Scientists! We got a pumpkin and investigated what it looked like, felt like and smelt like. Then we cut it open to see what was inside… we were surprised by how many seeds we found. Next we carried out an experiement to see what would happen if we left our pumpkin out in the air but you will have to check out our blog on Monday to find out what our experiment taught us!

Our pumkin has gone all fury. We felt it and it felt very different and much more squishy. We all took turns to smell it and we didnt like the way it smelt either. We can now tell you what happens if you dont keep fruit or vegetables cool and dry.

Well done to Rory, Saul and Aiden who worked so well as a team to complete a VERY tricky crocodile puzzle! It was so good that we have stuck it together and put it on the wall.

Halloween, The Gruffalo, Pumpkins and Apples!

What a fun and busy week we have had in Primary 1. On Monday we celebrated Halloween with lots of spooky activities in our classroom and the Active Learning Zone. In the afternoon we had a Halloween party with games and challenges.

We ducked for apples and with the left over ones we decided to measure how long we were in apples. We even got to measure Mrs McDonald our Head Teacher and found out that she is 2 apples longer than Mrs Mackay.

After measuring with apples we did a taste test to see if we liked red, green or red and green apples best. We enjoyed tasting the apples and recorded our results on a pictogram.

A pumpkin patch grew in our classrooms this week and we used tape measures to measure their circumference. It was a little bit tricky to measure the very big and very small ones but we worked with our learning partner. We recorded our results on our pumpkin measuring record sheets. We are going to have a go at measuring the circumference of lots of different things in the classroom.

We have been learning all about the Gruffalo. This week we watched the DVD of the Gruffalo and we loved it. We reread the story and then compared it to the film. We used Activexpressions to vote for our favourite. Primary 1a1 preferred the film to the book but Primary 1a2 liked the book and the film exactly the same.

Primary One got a postcard from our fish from last year saying that they were having such fun on holiday that they decided to stay on the sunny lake they were visiting. They have sent three of their friends who had heard how good we were at looking after fish to stay with us and we are very excited to have new class pets to look after. We voted on their names and finally settled on Rex, Buster and Fish.

We have been very busy in ICT this week too and have been learning how to use PIVOT. It is lots of fun and there have been lots of giggles while we make our Pivot Man do whatever we want him to. We even managed to get him to change colour and do lots of funny movements and dances.

We are all looking forward to Bonfire Night and enjoyed making bonfire and firework pictures this week. We will remember to stay safe on Bonfire Night.

REMEMBER TO HAVE FUN AND STAY SAFE ON BONFIRE NIGHT.

Our DCA Visit and More!

What a busy week we have had!

Our learning in maths this week has been to match numbers to number words. We will be continuing to learn about this over the next few weeks.

We have been practising our sounds and continuing to try and sound out, blend and write three letter words.

This week we listened to a story called the Grufflao. We have decided that this will be our next topic. Both classes made a plan. We had lots of ideas!

We have started with a Deep Dark Wood in our classrooms and in the Active Learning Zone. We are going to pretend to be the characters from the story. We have a book to draw and write about our adventures in the Deep Dark Wood.

On Wednesday we talked about Diwali. This is the Hindu Festival of Light. We listened to the story of Rama and Sita. You can read it here. http://www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk/vtc/ngfl/re/b-dag/ngfl-container/re-unit3-en.html Then we drew some Rangoli patterns and some Mehndi designs.

On Thursday we visited the DCA in Dundee. It has a cinema and we went to see Film Shorts for Wee Ones. We went on the bus and there were lots of balloons on the stairs to show us where to go. We sat in a cinema and watched lots of little films about all different things. We got a poster to take home.

When we got back to school we had to think about which film was our favourite. We all had to tell our teacher and our friends about the film. This is what we said….

Rory said “The thunder and lightening one was the best. When the man threw the phone and the lightening came.”

Nathan said “I liked the clooud. His head went to thunder and the whole house went on fire.”

Aiden said “I like the acorn film, It was funny when his hat fell off and he was in the bee’s house.”

Demilade said “I liked ALL the films! My favourite one was the cloud one because it’s so funny and I also liked the one with the acron. I liked it when he fell down.”

Ellie said “I liked the film with the little girl drawing people. It was funny.”

Flynn said “I liked the film with the dragon because the little boy ate the dragon.”

Brandon said “I liked the one when the boy put his head off. It was funny.”

Kayla said “I like the star film because the little girl got a star.”

On Friday we had a Fit Friday. Here is our Fit Friday timetables…

We had Rugby, Fruit tasting with Ms Gauld, Playground Games, Circuit Training, Basic Moves and a Judo session. They were all fab.

In our classrooms we also learned about parts of our body. P1a1 learned about the face and P1a2 looked at a skeleton. We talked about what all the parts of the body are called.

Next week we will be learning about The Gruffalo and how the book and the film are the same or different.

Measuring Up At The End Of Term One

This week we have been investigating and learning all about measuring. We have been looking at things that are long and things that are short. We had to sort out pictures on the promeathan board by thinking about which group they belonged to and if they were long or short and tall or small. Next, we had to investigate in our classrooms and see which things we could sort into these groups. It was lots of fun. In the Active Learning Zone we have been busy learning all length too. We had to measure how tall we were on the height chart and then had to mark our height on it with a post it note to see who was the tallest and smallest. We also had lots of fun measure the height or length of different pictures using cubes.

We are very proud of ourselves that we have now learnt all of our initial Jolly Phonic sounds. We have really enjoyed learning the sounds, names and actions but our favourite way to learn them has been by singing the songs which go with them, We are really good at remembering them and we can use all the sounds which we know to write short words. We are looking forward to learning our Jolly Phonic blends after the holidays.

In ICT we have been busy making pictures of the different characters from Sleeping Beauty. We had to use the start menu and select the Textease Paint icon. Next, we had to change the size of brush we were using and then use the colours which match the character we were going to create. It was tricky to control the mouse but we all tried really hard and got some fabulous results!

We hope that you have all enjoyed reading about what we have been doing during our first term of Primary One and we will see you all in two weeks when we return from our holiday.

We have our Film Festival trip to DCA on Thursday.

On the day your child has gym, please ensure they have no jewellery and long hair should be tied up.

After the holidays we will be learning about The Gruffalo.

The Gruffalo – Characters

We have been studying the Gruffalo even more. We have looked at all the things that make him a good character. We looked at the book and remembered his purple prickles, terrible teeth in his terrible jaw and his black tongue. We has to make our own character and had to think of lots of things it would need. Look at our pictures of our drawings.

We have been practising our Jolly Phonics sounds and trying to blend them together to read and write three letter words. We have been looking at our Oxford Reading Tree books and trying to perdict what will happen next in our stories.

In maths we have been continuing to look at pictograms. We made pictograms of fruit and we knew which fruit was the most popular. We also have been working with size. We looked at the characters from our Gruffalo story and thought about which was the tallest, shortest and narrowest. We used the Active Expressions to help us record our answers. We had to think about how the characters made us feel and we also had to choose our most favourite character in the story. Here are the results from our voting.

We have been learning songs for our Chirstmas Show, The Sleepy Shepherd. We have been using our super singing voices. Watch out for more information coming soon.

Please remember to leave a comment. The children have been so excited to read your comments about their learning.

Our Gruffalo Party

Thank you for all your comments. We have loved reading them. Please keep putting comments on our blog as we will be looking at it every week.
What a Gruffalo week we have had!
On Monday our homework was making a Gruffalo mask.
In school we have played in the Gruffalo’s Kitchen, games on the internet from www.grufflo.com, listened to the story in the reading corner with our MP3 players and played with the Gruffalo puppets at the puppet theatre.

We made invitations to give to each other for the party.

We also made menus for our party food.

Our Gruffalo Menu

By Wednesday afternoon we were SO excited!
We played party games in the nursery garden. We played Gruffalo Corners, Catch the tail of the fox and Gruffalo tig. If we were caught by the Gruffalo then we had to change into a tree in the forest.
Then we went into the class for the party food.
Purple Prickle Juice (blackcurrant juice), Poisonous Warts (green grapes), Roasted Fox (carrot sticks), Owl Ice Cream (vanilla ice cream with chocolate drops), Scrambled Snake (popcorn) and Gruffalo Cake.

Roasted Fox

Poisonous Warts

Purple Prickle Juice

Scrambled Snake

We all helped to decorate the Gruffalo Cake with chocolate butter icing and lots of yummy ingredients to make it look like the Gruffalo.

Next week we are going to play pin the poisonous wart on the Gruffalo and we are going to read the story of the Gruffalo’s Child.

The Gruffalo

This week we have been learning through the story of the Gruffalo. We have been playing in our roleplay area which has been turned into a wood. We have pretended to be the characters in the story. The Gruffalo, the mouse, the snake, the fox and the owl.
We have been learning new Jolly phonics sounds ai, ie and oa this week. Keep practising then at home! We have been playing lots of games to help us blend our sounds together.
Our number work this week has been all about apples. We have measured how long we are in apples. Look at the pictures this person was 17 apples tall. The tallest person was 20 apples tall!

We tasted different apples and put an apple on the tree to show which kind we liked the best.

We also make a pictogram of our favourite Gruffalo characters. We used stickers to add to our pictogram.
It is fireworks night tonight and we are all really excited about it. In the ICT this week we practised using Pivot and made an animation of a colourful fireworks night.

Today we have looked at our blog. Please leave us a comment. We will be looking at our blog every week.
