We read a story and everyone fell asleep for 100 years!

This has been our first full week of part time P1 and we are all feeling pretty tired but not as tired as Sleeping Beauty! This week  we started our new topic of Sleeping Beauty. We read three stories and they all had the same title of Sleeping Beauty on the the cover but we noticed that the illustrator was different on each one and the story was a little different too. We discovered that the first story had a forest grow up around the castle, the next story had thorny bushes grow up all around the castle and the third story was very special because even though its title was  Sleeping Beauty, it had Biff, Chip, Kipper, their Dad and their friend Wilma in it! We had to put our ‘thinking hats’ on  and talked with our teachers about the similarities and differences- they were very impressed with us!

We are still counting our days at school every morning and some of us are getting very good at talking about the numbers that are before and after the number we are putting up. We were amazed to see that wewhen we counted our number on Friday morning we had been at school for 9 days! We checked it against our rabbit number line ( they bring us a carrot for every day we are at school) and it was right!! We are also getting very good at moving the hand on our classroom clock to show what activities we are working on. We like looking at it in the morning when we come in because it helps us to know what we are doing and we can talk about the exciting things we will be doing. Our teacher, Mrs Mackay, says it is helping us learn about time too even though there are no numbers on the clock but we are sure that we will find out more about that soon.

Ms Gauld. our Healthy Eating Assistant, came to visit our class this week. She told us how to wash our hands properly to stay healthy. We were very good at listening to her and giving her ideas of when and why we should we wash our hands. We decided that there were five times we must wash our hands;

  1. After we go to the toilet.
  2. Before we eat anything.
  3. After we have touched an animal, even our pets.
  4. After we cough or sneeze.
  5. After we have been playing outside.

After we made our list Ms Gauld introduced us to Handy. He was a Hand Washing Helper and he told us if our list was right- and it was! He showed us what to do and what we would need, just like Ms Gauld and he even taught us a hand washing song. After that we all had a practise and Ms Gauld and Mrs Mackay said we were good enough that we could get one Handys special stickers!

We have been learning even more sounds this week. This week we learnt p, i and n and in the active learning zone and the classroom we have been practising using them to make words, finding them in words and writing them. We are getting really good and we even took our sound books home as part of our homework this week so that we can teach our families the sounds, their actions and their songs. We have also been enjoying using the iPad to play games all about our sounds.

In the Active Learning Zone there have been lots of new areas to investigate and learn in. One of our favourites this week has been the science table. We have been investigating different objects and shiny things. We know what to do when we are there because Walt is there to tell us what we are learning.

All through the week we have all had a shot at playing a really fun game called PIPs. It helps our teachers see what we know and we all thought it was lots of fun! We had to do some counting, say what some sounds were, find some items in a picture and lots more fun things!

Our project is Sleeping Beauty.

This week we will be learning the Swahili  song Jambo so that we can sing it for our visitors next month.

We can see the light- it’s a torch!

Woweee! What an amazing week for us and the whole of Dundee – The Olympic Torch came to visit as part of it’s relay race across Great Britain! We were all very excited and lots of us even went to see it in the park and along the streets. For homework we had to talk to our families about what we know about the Olympics and also what we wanted to know.

Each day we count down the days until the London 2012 Olympics and we  follow the torch by putting its picture on  a map to show us where it was. We were so happy that on day 25 it came to Dundee.

http://www.london2012.com/torch-relay/video/video=torch-relay-day25.html

This week to celebrate such a special event we decided that the best thing we could do was join in with all of the celebrations and have our own Olympic Torch Relay.  We decided that to have a torch relay we would all need a torch so our teachers set us the task of designing our own torch to hold our ‘faux’ Olympic  flame. We had to think of how to make a shape with the card that would hold the flame safely and that would show people the 2012 logo. They were all fabulous and we were amazed at how different each one was.

Once we had all designed our torches we went outside for our race. we used the very long playground at the front of our school and we passed the torch around. We had been learning that this has a special name. When the special flame from the Olympic Gods is passed from one torch to the next the torches have to touch together at the top. This is called a ‘kiss’.

When we had passed the flame on from our torch we joined the race and supported the next torch bearer. It was great fun and we were really pleased that we even got a special Olympic London 2012 certificate too!

In the Active Learning Zone we have also been finding out where the torch has been going by using a GIANT map and our Torch beebots. We have to think about where the torch goes to and see if we can guide the Torch Beebot to it. It was lots of fun exploring where in Great Britain we know or could find with support.

We have also been learning all about the Olympics and ordinal numbers by using the Wii and the London 2012 Game. We have only been looking at the running but we are doing very well at it. We have to use a timer to make sure that all of our friends can have a go and share the fun. When the race ends we have to look at who came first, second or third and then we put our medal on the chart. We even get a sticker which some of us have been putting in our wider achievements section of our folios.

We are learning all about plants and  this week and we have been planting cress. We had to think very carefully about what equipment we would need and then how we would plant our seed. It was very  interesting and lots of us were able to share what we had been learning in nursery, what we had written in our plan and use that to help us think and decide. We even wrote a set of instructions to help people who visit our ‘garden’ and ‘garden centres’  and we are going to put them all into a book to help new gardeners plant seeds successfully. We have been using our thinking flowers to help us think about our learning

We have been measuring lots and lots this week. We had to measure different leaves and then Jack was very kind and let us borrow his Beanstalk garden  and measure all the beanstalks which have been growing there. It was tricky because some of us had to estimate and measure. We learned that when you estimate you have to make a sensible guess before you measure. On Thursday we all brought things in from home and we estimated and measured them. Then we shared our object or toy with our friends to let them do the same. We all brought really good measuring objects in, there was even a Slinky which was long and short! We used our thinking flowers and triangle again and it helped us talk lots about measure.

We are still enjoying hearing and learning all about Jack and the Beanstalk and this week we looked at scenes form different books and we had to highlight where the characters were speaking. We have been learning that speech marks open and close to show when someone starts and stops speaking. We all used the Promethean Board to highlight some pages from books which we had already read and then we got a sheet from a book we had not read. Some of us had to highlight what the different charachters said in different colours and some of us had to highlight any speech using just one colour. It was quite hard but we all got there in the end.

Lastly we are still getting some super homework from our classmates. This week Tallulah has been very excited as two of the pieces of homework have been about her! Aiden made a mask and picture with his family. We all agreed that they were SUPER!

We would love it if you want to have a look and comment on the work that the nursery boys and girls have been doing. We share our Active Learning Zone with them on a Tuesday and Friday because we are getting so big that we are nearly in P2 and they are nearly in P1!

Why can’t pirates learn the alphabet? They always get stuck at C!

This week we have listened to lots of pirate stories.  They helped us to use our imagination and design our own pirates.  We loved drawing our own pirate characters and writing a description of them.

In maths we have been using pirates to subtract.  It was fun making the little counting people walk the plank! We can write our own take away sums.

In art we worked together to make big pirate ships.  The are up on the wall sailing the Seven Seas!

We are enjoying the pirate activities around the classroom and in the Active Learning Zone.

Do you know there’s a Baboon On The Moon?!

Wow, this has been a busy week in Primary One! We are all so happy because we have made a new friend- The Baboon On The Moon!! He lives there all by himself and we thought he was very nice but we think he might be a little sad too.

http://www.screeningshorts.org.uk

At the start of the week we ‘listened’ to our film about The Baboon On The Moon. This was hard because we had to use our thinking heads and listening ears to hear what sounds were on the film but we couldn’t see the pictures… it was VERY tricky but we did really well! In Primary 1a2 Aamir and Manahil were using lots of describing words and actions to think about and describe what they could hear. We wrote them all out on a list and then listened again to see if we could hear any more.

On Wednesday we watched the film but without any sound! This made us laugh a little and it reminded us of a film we saw at DCA during the film festival. We thought very carefully about what the Baboon does in the morning and what we do in the morning. A lot of us thought that it was funny that we did the same sort of things as the Baboon.

We also talked about what the Baboons job was and we found out that he had won a competition from NASA to be the Moon’s Caretaker. We liked the film so much that we each drew a picture of our favourite scene and put our comment about why we liked it in a speech bubble. We can’t wait to find out more about the Baboon on the Moon!

On Tuesday it was pancake day. We wrote out instructions to make delicious pancakes and some of us even made them in the Sunshine Room. They were delicious. Mrs Mackay’s dad even made us a special one !

We have been learning all about symmetry this week.  We used Textease paint to draw symmetrical pictures on the computer and in the Active Learning Zone we made symmetrical aliens.  They are brilliant.  We also had fun making symmetrical paintings.

On Friday we had a Red Fit Friday.  We all had to come to school in our sporty clothes and if possible wear something red.  We wore  red and made donations to raise some money for the British Heart Foundation.  Primary 1 love Fit Friday and had great fun doing brain gym, yoga, karate and playground games.

Sharing

This week in number work we have been learning how to share.  We played lots of fun sharing games on the promethean board and we used the little people, buttons and bears from our number areas to share.  We were all very good at sharing and impressed our teachers.

In the Active Learning Zone we have been using some cool aps on the iPad. There is a new Bee-Bot app which we have been using.  For a short period of time it  is now available for our parents to download to an apple device for free and may be beneficial if parents want to continue the fun learning we have been doing.  We have to plan the journey of the beebot around the garden. We have also been using the iPad help us learn more about sharing, and this app is also free.

We were having lots of fun with our model planets and were amazed to see that some were really much bigger than others. Alot of us thought that the Earth would be bigger than the sun but the sun is the biggest model.

In music P1a2 used lots of instruments to play rhythms along with different songs. We learnt two new songs and we were very musical, our teacher even said we sounded as good as a rock band! P1a1 can’t wait to have a go next week.

When P1a1 were at computing we got to use Pivot again but this time we had to learn how to change the man into a spaceman on the moon. It was a little tricky but we managed and were super! Next week P1a2 will have a go at making mini spaceman pivot movies.

We watched the NASA Junior films which helped us to see and learn lots of exciting facts about space.

We enjoyed the story of Noah and the Space Ark and had great fun making slatter paintings of space.  We even drew our own planets with chalk and blended them to look just like the real ones.  P1a1 made spaceships with Mrs McLean and the are now zooming round the classroom flown by aliens!!! P1a2 are really looking forward to making them next week.

This week we met our Primary 7 reading partners. We read them our reading books and showed them all the sounds we knew from our sound boooks, then the Primary 7’s read us a story from our story box. It was lots of fun! Primary 7 were really impressed at how well we could read and we were really impressed with them when they read us a story. We are looking forward to reading with them again.

Then we used the Activexpressions to vote for our favourite one. Some of the books had a Gruffalo sticker on them and we learned that these books were written after The Gruffalo.  We also noticed that pictures of the Mouse, the Squirrel and the Owl were in a lot of the other books.  We had fun trying to find them.

In number work we are learning how to add up.  We now know the number stories to 5.  We have been using the counting people and dalmatians maths box to help us.

We have been super busy adding sound to our Gruffalo films.  We worked together in groups to record what each character said in the story.  It was really funny listening to our recorded voices.  When all the groups are finished we are going to have a movie afternoon and watch each others films.

We have been busy making some beautiful crafts for the Christmas fayre next week. We hope that lots of people will come along and buy things from the Primary 1 stall.  Have a look at some of the things we will be selling.

There was a lot of excitement in Primary 1 yesterday as we had a visit from Zoolab.  Lots of animals came to see us and we were allowed to touch or stroke them.  We found out lots of information about the animals.  Some of us found a few of the animals a little scary but we were super brave.
