Gong Xi Fa Cai – Happy Chinese New Year!

In school this week we have been learning all about Chinese New Year. We have been learning all about the different ways that people celebrate and we have been hearing the story of how the animals each had a year named after them. 2012 is the year of the Dragon and so we each made a Chinese dragon. Chinese dragons are special because even though they can fly- they don’t have wings. We listened to the story of Chopsticks the mouse who, with a little help from Old Man Fu, helped a beautiful dragon to fly! We LOVED the story and all agreed that Chopsticks the mouse was very kind, brave and clever. In our role play areas we have made a Chinese Restaurant. We take it in turns to be the chef and  the customers. We have been practising using chopsticks too but they are quite tricky.

In the Active Learning Zone we have made laterns which our teachers put up over the restaurants. Some of even tried out Chinese writing on them, just like people in China might do when the send their laterns up into the sky.  At the water tray we had to try to collect the noodles with chopsticks, this made us laugh alot but some of us got quite good at using them.  In the sand tray we had to build the great wall of China and we watched a film about the Terracotta Army and were amazed at how many of them there are  and how big they are.

In number work we are still learning to add. We have been learning the stories of 8 and 9 and we got a Dragon Adding Sheet for homework to show what we know.

Adding, rhyming and fun for Children in Need.

We have been doing lots of adding up this week. It was a little bit tricky at first but we have had lots of fun and can now add up to the story of 3. We used the ladybird and dalmatian maths boxes to help us.

This week we began using our models of the Gruffalo characters to make a film. We worked in groups setting up our film sets, camera and tripod and next we will be recording the story using our voices.

We have used Pivot again this week and were able to add another Pivot character and make them dance. It was so funny watching each others sequences. We have also been using Hector’s world to help us learn how to stay safe when we are using computers.

We have used the Gruffalo story to help us learn all about rhyming words. Some of the rhyming words we found are mouse and house, wood and good, said and sped, claws and jaws, toes and nose and see and me.

We have had a Children in Need day at school to raise lots of money. This year the theme was Show Your Spots, Lets Raise Lots! We came to school wearing spotty clothes and had fun playing spotty bingo and the tuck shop had a yellow spotty theme.

Pets and Plants

We have been using the Promethean Whiteboard to help us add. We drag on the fish and add them to see how many altogether.

We have been playing a matching game about animals and their homes. We are still enjoying learning about rhyming and we all played this rhyming game were animals lived in a rhyming place – the toad lived on the road and the duck lived in a truck.

We wrote instructions on how to plant a seed. We had practise doing this in the compost tray and we all planted our own Sunflower seeds. Our sunflowers are starting to grow … Some are really tall but others are just little shoots.

We are still enjoying the garden centre and Dominika and Maja have been labelling and pricing things.

We have been reading books by Judith kerr but these are our favourite two.

We have been learning how o care for our pets and we are taking turns to feed Daisy and Rocky.

Here is the playdough models Sean made. He made an ant, a centipede, a caterpillar and a flat worm. Mrs Mackays favourite is the Centipede.

Remember!!!

Next week is our Goldilocks and the Three Bears Assembly on Tuesday 14th June at 9.30am. Parents are invited so please come along and see us!

Bear Sock Puppets

This week we have been busy making sock puppets.Mrs Munro brought in a sock puppet Hugh made at his art class and we decided we would love to make a sock puppet too. We had to stuff a sock with lots of stuffing and put elastic bands on it for his arms and legs. We had to colour him in using pens. We still have to finish them off but we think they are looking really cute.

In the classrooms we have been using our cameras and flipcams to take photos and videos of our learning. In P1a2 we have a special silver hat we were when it is our turning to record the learning that is taking place in the classroom.

In maths we have been adding. Some groups have been adding two numbers together and some have been adding three numbers together. We like using the dice to help us add.

We have been learning Goldilocks and the three bears songs at school too.

Look out for our Target and achievement sheets that will be coming home soon. We have been talking with our teachers about the things we are good at and the things we need to try harder with.

Next week P1a2 have a film crew coming to visit. We have been watching Talkie Time from BBC Learning Zone in class. The film crew are coming to film us while we watch new Talkie Time films to see if the stories are good. Have a look at Rod here. We love him. He is really funny. We thought it was just like Skype or Glow Meet.

Scottish Week

In the Classes

This week we have had a Scottish Week. All our learning has been through lots of things to do with Scotland.

We used the Active Expressions to show our teachers what we know about Scotland. We had to remember what the Scottish flag looked like and Nessie!

At the easels we have been painting Highland Cows.
We have been using Nessie the Loch Ness Monster to help us add.

For our homework we drew of picutre of Nessie too.
We got a story about Heather going on a Nessie Hunt and we had to remember what happened in the story and stick our pictures in the correct order.
We had art and painted tartan using cardboard strips to paint the stripes.
We made Highland cows by sticking.

We listened to stories about Hamish the Highland Cow.

On Thursday afternoon we had Highland Games when we played Hurl the Haggis, Leap the Burn, Pass the Hat, Flip the Claymore and many more! We all watched and some of our classmates were part of the team. We had a great time as we had to cheer on our House.

Old School New School

This week we have been celebrating 100 years of Dens Road School. We had an assembly on Tuesday where we saw what it was like to be in school in 1911 when the school opened. We saw a classroom with slates and chalk and an abacus. And we saw a classroom like ours with Nintendo DS’ and interactive whiteboards. We like our classrooms. We did a mind map of what we would like to learn about schools. Check out the latest school blog which has extracts of the school log book 100 years ago. https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/dd/DensRoadSchool100Years/

We have been practising our Jolly Phonics sounds lots this week. We have been making 3 letter words in class. We play with the wedge and make words.

In our homework we have a new Blending Book so we can have lots of practise of blending our sounds together. The more we practise, the better we get!

In maths we are learning to add things together. We are really good at it already. We have used our Ladybird Maths Box to help us.

We also practise writing numbers on our whiteboards. We completed our first adding sheet in the class and Mrs Mackay and Miss Davies will be putting them into our Folio of Work for P1.
