Mars, The Moon and Floating Through Space!

What a busy time we have had in Primary One this week. We have been learning lots more about space and astronauts! We have been learning lots about the Moon and we read a story called The Man In The Moon ( A Day In The Life Of Bob) it is all about the man who looks after the moon and the adventures he has during his day. We filled out a fact file page all about the moon and we thought it was very funny that there are craters (where the aliens in the story like to hide) and ‘seas’ on the moon which don’t have any water in them!

We have also been learning all about the planet Mars. We used the Microsoft World Wide Telescope to get an amazing look at Mars and Rory thought it looked a bit like a potato! We discovered that there is a North Pole on Mars and Aiden wondered if it has its own Santa Clause and if it did how he would breathe. We loved using the thermal seeking camera to look at the planet because we could see where it was cold and were it was hot. We were amazed to discover a volcano called Olympic Mons which was HUGE! Emily told us that it must be very hot because it was lots of different colours of red. Next we made posters all about Mars using lots of facts… Do you know why  all the dust looks red on Mars?

We have been having lots of fun playing in our Space Stations which have docked in P1a1’s classroom and the Active Learning  Zone and we are really looking forward to see the spaceship which is due to land in P1a2 classroom on Monday.

In maths we are still learning all about time but we have found out that there are two different types of clock. One type of clock has a big hand and a little hand this is called an analogue clock. We also learned about digital clocks. We thought about where we have seen these clocks and looked around to see where we could find them. We saw some on our families alarm clocks, radios, mobile phones, microwaves and videos… can you think of any more places you have seen digital clocks? We have been playing lots of fun games to help us match the o’clock on the written, analogue and digital clocks.

We are all looking forward to our 100 day party on Monday!

Scottish Week

This week has been a really fun one in Primary 1 as we have been learning all about Scotland.  We started the week printing our own tartan which we think you will agree looks fantastic.  We even designed some tartan on the Promethean board.

We enjoyed listening to stories all about Hamish the Highland Cow, Katie Morag and The Loch Ness Monster.  We had a go at making Highland cows out of playdough.

We had lots of actvities to do at the writing table. Mr Haggis helped us to learn lots of things.

We have been learning about Robert Burns and we are going to be having a poetry competition.  Primary 1a1 are learning a poem called Skatin by J.K. Annand and P1a2 are learning a poem called The Crocodile also by J.K. Annand.  Mrs McDonald will have the very tricky job of choosing a Primary 1 poetry competition winner.

On Friday we had a Fit Friday day.  In the afternoon the whole school got together to have a Highland Games.  Aamir, Bethesda, Abigail and Abdul Malik did us proud by takinhg part in lots of Scottish sports.  The hurled the haggis, tossed the wellie, leapt the burn and climbed a munro.

In the Active Learning we have been listening to Scottish music and learning some Scottish dancing.  Some of us even played instruments to go along with the dancing and music.

We have been learning how to tell the time this week.  We are getting really good at telling the time on analogue clocks and now know what o’clock it is.  Some of us even know half past times.  We enjoy using the clock fans to help us tell the time.

We are still practising adding up and Nessie helped us this week.

Last week of term at Dens Road PS

This is our last week before our spring holidays. We have had a busy week as P1a2 had people from the BBC in using Talkie Time and filming the class. We also had a coffee afternoon which the P2 and P2/3 classes organised for fundraising for Mary’s Meals. We were also learning about time.

We have been learning about time by looking at clocks, playing matching games and playing games on the computer to help us. We have been talking about days of the week and months of the year. Here are some games which we played.

The P2 and P2/3 classes held a coffee morning and we had lots of parents and friends came along to it. We also sang some spring songs and everyone had tea, coffee, juice and biscuits. The P1’s sold raffle tickets as we were also raising money for Mary’s Meals. We raised over £100 with all the raffle tickets. We had lots of prizes like Easter eggs, Easter colouring books and skipping ropes. We drew all the prizes this morning and they were all given out. If you want to find our more about Mary’s Meals check out the link bel0w.

P1a2 were very lucky to be asked to help the BBC with their making of a programme called Talkie Time. Two lovely ladies called Karen and Ruth came into the class and showed us a clip with Rodd from Talkie Time and Miss Davies helped us with it. Then in the afternoon we looked at some they were about to make and we had to let them know what we thought of it. We loved having Karen and Ruth in our class.

Stay safe over the holidays boys and girls and we will see you back to school on Monday 18th April.
