Measuring Up At The End Of Term One

This week we have been investigating and learning all about measuring. We have been looking at things that are long and things that are short. We had to sort out pictures on the promeathan board by thinking about which group they belonged to and if they were long or short and tall or small. Next, we had to investigate in our classrooms and see which things we could sort into these groups. It was lots of fun. In the Active Learning Zone we have been busy learning all length too. We had to measure how tall we were on the height chart and then had to mark our height on it with a post it note to see who was the tallest and smallest. We also had lots of fun measure the height or length of different pictures using cubes.

  

 

We are very proud of ourselves that we have now learnt all of our initial Jolly Phonic sounds. We have really enjoyed learning the sounds, names and actions but our favourite way to learn them has been by singing the songs which go with them, We are really good at remembering them and we can use all the sounds which we know to write short words. We are looking forward to learning our Jolly Phonic blends after the holidays.

  

In ICT we have been busy making pictures of the different characters from Sleeping Beauty. We had to use the start menu and select the Textease Paint icon. Next, we had to change the size of brush we were using and then use the colours which match the character we were going to create. It was tricky to control the mouse but we all tried really hard and got some fabulous results!

  

  

We hope that you have all enjoyed reading about what we have been doing during our first term of Primary One and we will see you all in two weeks when we return from our holiday.

  • P1a2 have gym on Thursday afternoon.
  • Remember to return your permission slips and money for our trip to the DCA Film Festival.
  • Book bags will be issued on  Friday. Please read the book with your child over the weekend and return it to school on Monday morning.

We have our Film Festival trip to DCA on Thursday.

On the day your child has gym, please ensure they have no jewellery and long hair should be tied up.

After the holidays we will be learning about The Gruffalo.

Patterns all around

We have been very busy looking at patterns this week and have had great fun copying patterns and making up ones of our own.  We love making patterns with the beads and giving our teachers pattern necklaces to wear.

   

This week we have been in the ICT Suite and have been using Textease Paint to create pictures of the thorny hedge that grew up around the castle whilst Sleeping Beauty slept for 100 years.

  

In Mrs Munro’s Learning Zone we have been looking for lots of phonics fairies, when we find them we have to write their sounds on a sheet.  We feel very important walking round with our clipboards.

We had a visitor this week to tell us all about how to look after our teeth.  We had two boxes and had to sort food that is good for our teeth and food that is bad for our teeth.  We had a go at brushing the big teeth on the  model of a mouth and a very funny dog! Next week we are going to start brushing our teeth in school.

Autumn is coming

We have all had a good week this week. We have learned lots of new Jolly Phonics sounds and we are practising them every day.
We have been reading our Oxford Reading Tree books. P1a1 have been reading The Lost Teddy and P1a2 have been reading At School. We have enjoyed using the Promethean Board to look at our stories using the Magic Page.
In Maths we have trying to remember what our numbers up to ten look like, trying to write them and to count up to ten things. We made ten green bottles at our Making Table and will be playing with them next week.
We have been talking about harvest and Autumn. We have been playing with conkers, leaves and fir cones and talking about the changes we will see outside. We have been investigating Autumn things through the microscope. We made finger print trees in art and during our ICT lesson we drew a tree in Textease paint and used the stamper tool to add leaves.

ICT

Hello everyone!

We have had a busy learning our new sounds, g, l and o. We have been continuing to practise all our sounds. Playing with making their shapes with play dough, singing our Jolly Phonics songs on the karaoke machine and writing our sounds on the whiteboards and pens at the writing table.

In maths we have been learning about making patterns. We have used beads to make patterns with two colours and practising these at our numeracy table during activities. We have made pictures with sticky paper and have used colours and shapes to make the patterns.  We remember to use the digital camera to take photographs when we have completed a pattern.

We have been creating brilliant models at the bricks. We have used our imagination and created buildings, mosques and castles. Next week we will be using the bricks to build a town for our railway.

This was our first week in the ICT suite. We used a program called Textease Paint. We have been talking about ourselves in school and drew pictures of our faces. We thought about the colour of our eyes and our hair. Look out for a letter home next week as at Dens Road we have the Softease Community at Home licence and you will receive the download URL and password for use of Textease at home.
