Halloween, The Gruffalo, Pumpkins and Apples!

What a fun and busy week we have had in Primary 1. On Monday we celebrated Halloween with lots of spooky activities in our classroom and the Active Learning Zone. In the afternoon we had a Halloween party with games and challenges.

We ducked for apples and with the left over ones we decided to measure how long we were in apples. We even got to measure Mrs McDonald our Head Teacher and found out that she is 2 apples longer than Mrs Mackay.

After measuring with apples we did a taste test to see if we liked red, green or red and green apples best. We enjoyed tasting the apples and recorded our results on a pictogram.

A pumpkin patch grew in our classrooms this week and we used tape measures to measure their circumference. It was a little bit tricky to measure the very big and very small ones but we worked with our learning partner. We recorded our results on our pumpkin measuring record sheets. We are going to have a go at measuring the circumference of lots of different things in the classroom.

We have been learning all about the Gruffalo. This week we watched the DVD of the Gruffalo and we loved it. We reread the story and then compared it to the film. We used Activexpressions to vote for our favourite. Primary 1a1 preferred the film to the book but Primary 1a2 liked the book and the film exactly the same.

Primary One got a postcard from our fish from last year saying that they were having such fun on holiday that they decided to stay on the sunny lake they were visiting. They have sent three of their friends who had heard how good we were at looking after fish to stay with us and we are very excited to have new class pets to look after. We voted on their names and finally settled on Rex, Buster and Fish.

We have been very busy in ICT this week too and have been learning how to use PIVOT. It is lots of fun and there have been lots of giggles while we make our Pivot Man do whatever we want him to. We even managed to get him to change colour and do lots of funny movements and dances.

We are all looking forward to Bonfire Night and enjoyed making bonfire and firework pictures this week. We will remember to stay safe on Bonfire Night.

Week Starting 7th November 2011

  • P1a2 have no gym  this week due to In Service days.
  • There will be no book bags this week due to In Service days.

On the day your child has gym, please ensure they have no jewellery and long hair should be tied up.

Next week we will be learning about money the different coins we use.

REMEMBER TO HAVE FUN AND STAY SAFE ON BONFIRE NIGHT.

Sleeping Beauty

  Hi everyone!

We have had a very busy week. Here is what we have been learning.

We have been learning new sounds p, i, and n. And we are beginning to see if we can blend these sounds together to make words. We are continuing to write on our sound sheets and send them home.

We have been learning about our Oxford Reading Tree characters that will be in our story books. We have heard stories about Kipper and Biff and Chip.

We have been listening to lots of Sleeping Beauty stories and have lots of different areas of learning which will help us learn about Sleeping Beauty. After we listened to all the stories we voted using Active Expressions. We had to think about which one was our favourtie.

We also have been listening to stories about princess too. We have a castle, puppets and Sleeping Beauty’s Bedroom in Mrs Munro’s Learning Zone and have been making crowns in the classroom.

We have also been watching a DVD about Sleeping Beauty made with shadow puppets. We were amazed with it and are going to vote about whether we like the book or the DVD the best. We have a big floor book and will start to put all the things we are learning about Sleeping Beauty into it.

In maths we have been counting, learning numbers and sorting. We used maths boxes. We used the frogs maths box and sang five speckled frogs and we used the Bad Tempered Ladybird box. We listened to the story and counted the ladybirds with spots.

We used the Promethean Board to sort bears and sorted buttons and other things into sets too.

Please leave us a comment as we look at our blog every week to see comments, how many people have viewed it and what countries have viewed it.

Scottish Week

In the Classes

This week we have had a Scottish Week. All our learning has been through lots of things to do with Scotland.

We used the Active Expressions to show our teachers what we know about Scotland. We had to remember what the Scottish flag looked like and Nessie!

At the easels we have been painting Highland Cows.
We have been using Nessie the Loch Ness Monster to help us add.

For our homework we drew of picutre of Nessie too.
We got a story about Heather going on a Nessie Hunt and we had to remember what happened in the story and stick our pictures in the correct order.
We had art and painted tartan using cardboard strips to paint the stripes.
We made Highland cows by sticking.

We listened to stories about Hamish the Highland Cow.

On Thursday afternoon we had Highland Games when we played Hurl the Haggis, Leap the Burn, Pass the Hat, Flip the Claymore and many more! We all watched and some of our classmates were part of the team. We had a great time as we had to cheer on our House.

Our Scottish display.

In the Active Learning Zone

We have been continuing to learn about old toys and new toys. We have been having a great time and getting active on the PS2 playing with the eye toy and eye toy sports. We play Football Fever in pairs.

The Gruffalo – Characters

We have been studying the Gruffalo even more. We have looked at all the things that make him a good character. We looked at the book and remembered his purple prickles, terrible teeth in his terrible jaw and his black tongue. We has to make our own character and had to think of lots of things it would need. Look at our pictures of our drawings.

We have been practising our Jolly Phonics sounds and trying to blend them together to read and write three letter words. We have been looking at our Oxford Reading Tree books and trying to perdict what will happen next in our stories.

In maths we have been continuing to look at pictograms. We made pictograms of fruit and we knew which fruit was the most popular. We also have been working with size. We looked at the characters from our Gruffalo story and thought about which was the tallest, shortest and narrowest. We used the Active Expressions to help us record our answers. We had to think about how the characters made us feel and we also had to choose our most favourite character in the story. Here are the results from our voting.

We have been learning songs for our Chirstmas Show, The Sleepy Shepherd. We have been using our super singing voices. Watch out for more information coming soon.

Please remember to leave a comment. The children have been so excited to read your comments about their learning.

Last week of first term

A great start to school for our P1s. They have settled into school really well, can follow instructions and have been learning about our school rules. It’s good to be green. They have all been successful learners. They confidently take part in all school life.

Both classes have been looking at our Oxford Reading Tree stories again in the last week and have been learning all about Mum, Dad, Kipper, Biff, Chip and Floppy. They have loved the stories At School and The Lost Teddy.

We have been learning more Jolly Phonics sounds and so far have learned 25! We keep practising these sounds all the time so we can remember them and use them when we start to read and write.

We used the microscope to look closely at conkers and fir cones and took pictures of them. We have made lots of art work eg. paper art trees and paintings of trees to help us remember about the signs of Autumn.

During play we have practised writing our numbers. We have continued to make patterns and look for shapes in the world around us.

Lastly, on the last day of term, we used Active Expressions for the first time. We used these to see how well we had remembered our numbers and shapes this term.

Thank you to all P1s and parents and carers for a fantastic first term. Your support is greatly appreciated.
