News Alert – Primary One are Authors!

There has been alot of excitement in primary one because we are writing our own book! We have been thinking very carefully about all of the different things we have learnt over the past term and our teachers were really amazed! WE KNOW LOTS!!!!! First of all we made a flipchart on the computer and gave each subject a page of its own then we gave each page a title. Next, we looked at what facts the readers would want to know about all of the areas in the book – that was tricky because we know so much! After that we designed the title cards and illustrations for our book. We wrote a blurb which is very important beacuse it is how you know if you will like a book and tells you what it is about. We still have to make our contents page and our covers but we have a great title for our book and can’t wait to make them next week and publish it- we are sure that it will be a best seller!

In the Active Learning Zone we have been wowing our teachers with how good we are at reading and using the iPad. We have been using an app called QuickQuote and we have read stories all by ourself recorded them on one for our iPads. We hope to have them here for you to listen to soon because they are really good.

Quiz time.

This week started off in a very exciting way with the annual Interhouse Quiz on Monday afternoon.  Pupils were selected from every stage to represent the four houses Camperdown, Caird, Dudhope and Baxter.  All the team members were fantastic answering the quiz questions and the rest of the pupils were super supporters cheering on their house.  It was very close but in the end Dudhope won.  Hooray.

We have been doing more learning through the Baboon on the Moon and P1a1 had fun making some brilliant paintings of the Baboon.

We also learnt about the ‘oo’ sound.  We looked at the story of The Moon Jet on the Promethean board and completed some ‘oo’ activities.  We thought of lots of ‘oo’ words like tooth, pool, book, foot, look and zoo.

It has been a great week for listening to stories as we had a visit from Mrs McDonald on Wednesday.  She read us The Good Little Wolf which had a very surprising ending.

We also had visits from Primary 6  as we are working with them on the Picture  Book Award.  They visited us in our classrooms to read us stories and ask us lots of questions about what we thought of the stories and illustrations.  They are going to come and see us again next week to read us some more stories.  We are really looking forward to it.

One of our tasks in the Active Learning Zone has been adding 3 numbers together.  We used  planets to help us and wrote our sums on a whiteboard.  We love adding up!

Next week we will be learning how to make a book all about space.

Mars, The Moon and Floating Through Space!

What a busy time we have had in Primary One this week. We have been learning lots more about space and astronauts! We have been learning lots about the Moon and we read a story called The Man In The Moon ( A Day In The Life Of Bob) it is all about the man who looks after the moon and the adventures he has during his day. We filled out a fact file page all about the moon and we thought it was very funny that there are craters (where the aliens in the story like to hide) and ‘seas’ on the moon which don’t have any water in them!

We have also been learning all about the planet Mars. We used the Microsoft World Wide Telescope to get an amazing look at Mars and Rory thought it looked a bit like a potato! We discovered that there is a North Pole on Mars and Aiden wondered if it has its own Santa Clause and if it did how he would breathe. We loved using the thermal seeking camera to look at the planet because we could see where it was cold and were it was hot. We were amazed to discover a volcano called Olympic Mons which was HUGE! Emily told us that it must be very hot because it was lots of different colours of red. Next we made posters all about Mars using lots of facts… Do you know why  all the dust looks red on Mars?

We have been having lots of fun playing in our Space Stations which have docked in P1a1’s classroom and the Active Learning  Zone and we are really looking forward to see the spaceship which is due to land in P1a2 classroom on Monday.

In maths we are still learning all about time but we have found out that there are two different types of clock. One type of clock has a big hand and a little hand this is called an analogue clock. We also learned about digital clocks. We thought about where we have seen these clocks and looked around to see where we could find them. We saw some on our families alarm clocks, radios, mobile phones, microwaves and videos… can you think of any more places you have seen digital clocks? We have been playing lots of fun games to help us match the o’clock on the written, analogue and digital clocks.

We are all looking forward to our 100 day party on Monday!

Reading Partners, Earth and beyond…….

This week we have been learning all about the planet Earth.  We learnt that it is millions of years old and that when it is seen from space it looks blue, green and white.  We made a fact file sheet.

We watched the NASA Junior films which helped us to see and learn lots of exciting facts about space.

We enjoyed the story of Noah and the Space Ark and had great fun making slatter paintings of space.  We even drew our own planets with chalk and blended them to look just like the real ones.  P1a1 made spaceships with Mrs McLean and the are now zooming round the classroom flown by aliens!!! P1a2 are really looking forward to making them next week.

This week we met our Primary 7 reading partners. We read them our reading books and showed them all the sounds we knew from our sound boooks, then the Primary 7’s read us a story from our story box. It was lots of fun! Primary 7 were really impressed at how well we could read and we were really impressed with them when they read us a story. We are looking forward to reading with them again.

In maths we are still adding up and we have doing lots of work on the stories of 6 and 7.

Happy New Year – Back down to Earth …..

It has only been two weeks but we have been very busy.

On Thursday we told our teachers all about our holidays and we picked our favourite thing that happened and wrote it in our new writing jotters. We had to concentrate very hard to make sure that we remembered to use our best writing and fabulous finger spaces.

We also counted how many days we have been at school for and talked about the New Year date. We learned about New Year Resolutions and Miss Davies and Mrs Mackay asked us to think about what we hope to do this year. We all took a turn to tell them and they put it on the computer. We are going to print them to put into our Folios.

We learned that our new topic is going to be Space. To help us get some ideas we read the story of Winnie in Space where Winnie the witch goes into space with her cat, Wilbur. They had lots of adventures and even meet some naught alien space rabbits! After the story we used the computer to make a mind map. We had lots of great ideas about what we already knew, what we would like to learn about and what we would like the different areas of our classrooms to be. John was very clever at moving the mouse to help Mrs Mackay when P1a2 were thinking about their plan. We are so excited about our new Space project.
