We read a story and everyone fell asleep for 100 years!

This has been our first full week of part time P1 and we are all feeling pretty tired but not as tired as Sleeping Beauty! This week  we started our new topic of Sleeping Beauty. We read three stories and they all had the same title of Sleeping Beauty on the the cover but we noticed that the illustrator was different on each one and the story was a little different too. We discovered that the first story had a forest grow up around the castle, the next story had thorny bushes grow up all around the castle and the third story was very special because even though its title was  Sleeping Beauty, it had Biff, Chip, Kipper, their Dad and their friend Wilma in it! We had to put our ‘thinking hats’ on  and talked with our teachers about the similarities and differences- they were very impressed with us!

We are still counting our days at school every morning and some of us are getting very good at talking about the numbers that are before and after the number we are putting up. We were amazed to see that wewhen we counted our number on Friday morning we had been at school for 9 days! We checked it against our rabbit number line ( they bring us a carrot for every day we are at school) and it was right!! We are also getting very good at moving the hand on our classroom clock to show what activities we are working on. We like looking at it in the morning when we come in because it helps us to know what we are doing and we can talk about the exciting things we will be doing. Our teacher, Mrs Mackay, says it is helping us learn about time too even though there are no numbers on the clock but we are sure that we will find out more about that soon.

Ms Gauld. our Healthy Eating Assistant, came to visit our class this week. She told us how to wash our hands properly to stay healthy. We were very good at listening to her and giving her ideas of when and why we should we wash our hands. We decided that there were five times we must wash our hands;

  1. After we go to the toilet.
  2. Before we eat anything.
  3. After we have touched an animal, even our pets.
  4. After we cough or sneeze.
  5. After we have been playing outside.

After we made our list Ms Gauld introduced us to Handy. He was a Hand Washing Helper and he told us if our list was right- and it was! He showed us what to do and what we would need, just like Ms Gauld and he even taught us a hand washing song. After that we all had a practise and Ms Gauld and Mrs Mackay said we were good enough that we could get one Handys special stickers!

We have been learning even more sounds this week. This week we learnt p, i and n and in the active learning zone and the classroom we have been practising using them to make words, finding them in words and writing them. We are getting really good and we even took our sound books home as part of our homework this week so that we can teach our families the sounds, their actions and their songs. We have also been enjoying using the iPad to play games all about our sounds.

In the Active Learning Zone there have been lots of new areas to investigate and learn in. One of our favourites this week has been the science table. We have been investigating different objects and shiny things. We know what to do when we are there because Walt is there to tell us what we are learning.

All through the week we have all had a shot at playing a really fun game called PIPs. It helps our teachers see what we know and we all thought it was lots of fun! We had to do some counting, say what some sounds were, find some items in a picture and lots more fun things!

  • We are going to be in school fulltime from Monday 3rd September 2012

Our project is Sleeping Beauty.

This week we will be learning the Swahili  song Jambo so that we can sing it for our visitors next month.

What sport do pirates like? Arrrrrrrrrm wrestling!

This has been a very busy week so its just as well we have been learning all about co-ordinates or else we would have gotten lost! First of all we got another present from our friendly pirate, Pirate Pete. There was a big box with a letter and a visitor inside…. it was Pirate the Parrot. We listened to a story where he was part of the ships crew! We have learnt that he is a Scarlet Macaw and he will stay with us as long as we promised Pirate Pete that we would look after him. We were even more excited to hear that Pirate the Parrot would go and visit Pirate Pete at the weekend when we were at home with our families so we have left a window open so he can fly in and out… Pirate Pete’s letter also said that if Pirate the Parrot is happy in our class she might even bring some of her friends to visit us too!

We have been having ever such a fab time in the Active Learning Zone making lots of treasure maps. These have been really detailed and we have been building on what we have been doing by learning all about co-ordinates. We had a grid with lots of pirate pictures on it and we had to work out what grid they were in. We thought it was tricky but we all did really well. We have also been making our pictures of pirate ships on the Promethean Board and with the big bricks. We are really pleased with our work.

We are still learning all about subtraction and have been practising trying to work out missing number subtraction. It was very different from working out normal subtraction and some of us thought that it was a bit like trying to solve a problem.

We have been thinking about different ways to think! Mrs Munro introduced us to some thinking flowers. We recognised the triangle from the one that our teachers have on their walls and we discovered that the flowers were the same colour as the bands of the pyramid. Each of the colours meant we had to think in a different way… it was so much fun and we got fab answers when we thought about a story we had been reading. We can’t wait to use them again!

On Wednesday Tony the Minister came to see us. He told us a great story all about how God made the world and about what different people believe. It was really interesting and we are really looking forward to his next visit.

On Friday we got a a surprise when a story bag arrived in our class. It had lots of exciting things which made us think about what story they could be from. When the bag was empty we decided that the story was ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and that we would like to do a project about it. We also read  the story and the book was very special because it had dots in it which we could put a magic pen on and it told us the story in English and if we touched a different dot it read the story to us in Polish. It was lots of fun and we really liked listening to it in a different language!

We watched the NASA Junior films which helped us to see and learn lots of exciting facts about space.

We enjoyed the story of Noah and the Space Ark and had great fun making slatter paintings of space.  We even drew our own planets with chalk and blended them to look just like the real ones.  P1a1 made spaceships with Mrs McLean and the are now zooming round the classroom flown by aliens!!! P1a2 are really looking forward to making them next week.

This week we met our Primary 7 reading partners. We read them our reading books and showed them all the sounds we knew from our sound boooks, then the Primary 7’s read us a story from our story box. It was lots of fun! Primary 7 were really impressed at how well we could read and we were really impressed with them when they read us a story. We are looking forward to reading with them again.

Measuring Up At The End Of Term One

This week we have been investigating and learning all about measuring. We have been looking at things that are long and things that are short. We had to sort out pictures on the promeathan board by thinking about which group they belonged to and if they were long or short and tall or small. Next, we had to investigate in our classrooms and see which things we could sort into these groups. It was lots of fun. In the Active Learning Zone we have been busy learning all length too. We had to measure how tall we were on the height chart and then had to mark our height on it with a post it note to see who was the tallest and smallest. We also had lots of fun measure the height or length of different pictures using cubes.

We are very proud of ourselves that we have now learnt all of our initial Jolly Phonic sounds. We have really enjoyed learning the sounds, names and actions but our favourite way to learn them has been by singing the songs which go with them, We are really good at remembering them and we can use all the sounds which we know to write short words. We are looking forward to learning our Jolly Phonic blends after the holidays.

In ICT we have been busy making pictures of the different characters from Sleeping Beauty. We had to use the start menu and select the Textease Paint icon. Next, we had to change the size of brush we were using and then use the colours which match the character we were going to create. It was tricky to control the mouse but we all tried really hard and got some fabulous results!

We hope that you have all enjoyed reading about what we have been doing during our first term of Primary One and we will see you all in two weeks when we return from our holiday.

This week as part of our Sleeping Beauty project we have become Reading Detectives.  First we looked at a page on the Promethean board and used the highlighting tool to show words and sounds that we knew.  Next we all got a different page from one of the Sleeping Beauty books and using highlighters we coloured the words and sounds that we knew.  It was great fun and we were all super detectives!

In number work this week we finished looking at patterns and have been learning about missing numbers and number sequences.  We had lots of different activities to help us put numbers in order.  Every morning we use our number square to help us learn about numbers.

Ms Gauld came to visit us this week to show us how to stay healthy by washing our hands.  We watched a DVD with Handy who showed us when we should wash our hands and how to do it properly.  We all went to the toilets to wash our hands and we did such a good job that we all got a Handy sticker.  Watch out for our handwashing chart in our homework packets next week.

At gym we have been practising overarm and underarm throwing.  This week we had a giant target which we had to throw our fluff balls onto to get points for our team.  We also learnt a new game called clean the garden which was lots of fun.

We love to talk about what we can see in the pictures and Miss Davies and Mrs Mackay even have special puppets to help us remember who everyone is. Floppy is EVERYONES favourite.

We drew our favourite scenes from Sleeping Beauty and added speech bubbles to one of the characters in our picture. We stuck all our pictures in our floor book.

In numeracy we have been learning all about 2D shapes. We have been sorting, matching and drawing shapes. We liked to play the Feely Bag game where we could not see the shape but had to guess what it was by its features.

We also had our first school assembly and gym this week. We loved gym and were very good at balancing fluff balls using our bodies.

We made pictures of a castle with shapes, made a castle with a thorny hedge all around and have been playing in Sleeping Beauty’s bedroom. We also have a floor book all about our learning through Sleeping Beauty.

We have been talking about Eid. Manahil had a beautiful henna pattern on her arm to celebrate Eid.

We also put in an entry to the Dundee Flower Festival. We made birds with feathers. We won a third place!

Sleeping Beauty

  Hi everyone!

We have had a very busy week. Here is what we have been learning.

We have been learning new sounds p, i, and n. And we are beginning to see if we can blend these sounds together to make words. We are continuing to write on our sound sheets and send them home.

We have been learning about our Oxford Reading Tree characters that will be in our story books. We have heard stories about Kipper and Biff and Chip.

We have been listening to lots of Sleeping Beauty stories and have lots of different areas of learning which will help us learn about Sleeping Beauty. After we listened to all the stories we voted using Active Expressions. We had to think about which one was our favourtie.

We also have been listening to stories about princess too. We have a castle, puppets and Sleeping Beauty’s Bedroom in Mrs Munro’s Learning Zone and have been making crowns in the classroom.

We have also been watching a DVD about Sleeping Beauty made with shadow puppets. We were amazed with it and are going to vote about whether we like the book or the DVD the best. We have a big floor book and will start to put all the things we are learning about Sleeping Beauty into it.

In maths we have been counting, learning numbers and sorting. We used maths boxes. We used the frogs maths box and sang five speckled frogs and we used the Bad Tempered Ladybird box. We listened to the story and counted the ladybirds with spots.

We used the Promethean Board to sort bears and sorted buttons and other things into sets too.

A New Primary One

Welcome to all our new Primary One pupils!

You first week at Dens Road has been very busy and we cannot believe how quickly you have all settled. Let’s see what we have been learning about….

We were introduced to Walt and Wilf this week. Walt is the teacher’s friend and tells what to teach us. Wilf tells us what to do to succeed. They are both there to help us learn.

We have been learning new Jolly Phonics sounds s, a and t. We have been trying to write those sounds and think of words that begin with them. We have been using the promethean board to practise writing them too.

Our number work this week has been practising writing numbers and drawing how many. We are very good and lots of us can count and write lots of numbers. We will be counting how many days at school. We have been at school 3 days to far.

We have been learning about the rules in school and about trying very hard to be green. We have a wall with our names on it. If we follow all the school rules we stay on green and get special treats. We also have sticker charts too and get a special prize when we complete our sticker chart. We love getting stickers for our charts!

We will be learning about Sleeping Beauty and have started reading different stories about her. We will be doing lots of activities about Sleeping Beauty.

Please leave a comment and let us know what you thought about your first week at school.

Old School New School

This week we have been celebrating 100 years of Dens Road School. We had an assembly on Tuesday where we saw what it was like to be in school in 1911 when the school opened. We saw a classroom with slates and chalk and an abacus. And we saw a classroom like ours with Nintendo DS’ and interactive whiteboards. We like our classrooms. We did a mind map of what we would like to learn about schools. Check out the latest school blog which has extracts of the school log book 100 years ago. https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/dd/DensRoadSchool100Years/

We have been practising our Jolly Phonics sounds lots this week. We have been making 3 letter words in class. We play with the wedge and make words.

In our homework we have a new Blending Book so we can have lots of practise of blending our sounds together. The more we practise, the better we get!

In maths we are learning to add things together. We are really good at it already. We have used our Ladybird Maths Box to help us.

We also practise writing numbers on our whiteboards. We completed our first adding sheet in the class and Mrs Mackay and Miss Davies will be putting them into our Folio of Work for P1.
