Active Schools Co-Ordinator Lindsay Mitchell presented Strone Primary School pupils with a bag of sports equipment for having the highest percentage of pupils taking part in the Commonwealth Passports scheme last year, which rewarded pupils participating in extra-curricular sports activities both in and out of school.

Thursday 30th October was not a good night to visit St. Mun’s Primary with all manner of spooks and weird looking people lurking about….. not to worry though it was only the pupils of Primary 4-7 who had turned up for the Halloween Disco, which was organised and run by the Primary 7s as part of their Enterprise project.
The children enjoyed a night of dancing, games and fun while they feasted on snacks including cakes which had been iced by the pupils who attend the Cake Decorating, afterschool club. Mmm!

4 lucky children from Rosneath Primary were invited to Glasgow City Chambers last Thursday to a Game On Scotland Celebration Event. They had the opportunity to meet up with 80 other children from schools all over Scotland for a fun-filled day where they met Team Scotland/Team GB athletes from 4 different sports. All schools taking part had been awarded a Game On Scotland plaque and shared their challenges.
CAST is happy to announce that the following budding graphic novel creators have won prizes in the 2014 Argyll and Bute Writing Competition, supported by Scottish Book Trust. First prize is scooped by Ellie Grierson from Lochdonhead Primary, second place goes to Holli Wilson from Rhu Primary and third is awarded to Morvern Paisley from Clachan Primary. Following the Nano-Science workshop in September, Primary 3 and 4 pupils from Dunoon Primary School produced posters about Nano-Jelly. During the workshop, run by the Really Small Science Group from Strathclyde University, the pupils became ‘Really Small Scientists’ for the day and learned about the world of Nano-Science. They discovered how everyday items such as jelly and even their own bodies are made up of tiny nano-sized molecules.

One of Argyll and Bute’s instumental music tutors Stuart Liddell, from Inveraray, has been crowned the Glenfiddich Piping Champion. The event, now in its 41st year, is seen as piping’s “ultimate accolade”. The championship is only open to those who have achieved success in other solo piping competitions earlier in the year. Port Ellen Primary School have again been very successful at the National Mod, which this year was held in Inverness. The schools gaelic Choir, Coisir Bun-Sgoil Port Ilein, won the choral unison rural primary, choral Puirt-a-beul and choral 2 part harmony learner. Their was success for individuals also, with Rebecca coming first and Rowan coming second in the solo singing 7-8, Eva coming first in the solo singing 9-10 and Abbie coming first in the solo singing 11-12 girls and Asher in the boys category. This week we achieved our first Green Flag Award. The ECO committee and Mrs Davidson (who helped with the paperwork) worked very hard and would like to thank everybody who helped achieve this.
Barcaldine Primary School have won a total of 11 firsts, 11 seconds and 9 third prizes at two local horticultural shows at Benderloch and Connel, over the past weekends. They put on fine displays of vegetables, flowers, baking, arts and crafts. The pupils are delighted to be the first primary school to win the Duncan MacPherson Trophy for a selection of mixed vegetables. Many thanks to Marion Fisher for all her hard work gardening with us.
Today we were handing out commonwealth passport medals at Cardross Primary for pupils who completed lots of Commonwealth sports.
After many weeks of studying cycling and road safety theory and practical sessions in the playground and on the road, Primary 6 were finally ready to sit their cycling proficiency in June. We were all very proud of everyone who took part and passed with flying colours.
Rothesay Primary would like to thank the parents and staff who worked with the pupils enabling them to achieve success. The smiles in the photo say it all!
After months of sowing, weeding, transplanting, weeding, watering and weeding (!) Rothesay Primary were delighted to have some fine produce for the Rothesay Horticultural Society Show. We carefully choose our best fruit and veg and got them ready for the show bench. We entered two varieties of tomato, black grapes, peppers, yellow courgette, runner beans, peas, curly kale, pears, rhubarb, onions, carrots and a whopping marrow!
Each year the Trust for Sustainable Living organises a global essay competition, which this year invited schoolchildren to outline their ideas for sustainable living and the steps needed for societies to achieve them. This year 73 countries participated and essays were received from 1,094 children. We had several finalists from Port Ellen and in July Asher travelled down to Oxford to attend the international schools debate, which was attended by children from 23 countries.

Cardross primary were delighted to scoop the Christian aid trophies in both football and netball this year. Both teams faced stiff competition from Colgrain and their respective finals. The events were well organised and the pupils enjoyed taking part. Well done to all involved!
Max from Primary 2 earned a huge 283 points on his Commonwealth Passport and won tickets to a gymnastics event in Glasgow this summer. Max is pictured with other gold, silver and bronze medallists and Active School Co-ordinator, Callum Imray, who organised the event in South Kintyre schools.
When our P1-3 pupils at Strone Primary School attended the Scottish Book Trust Awards in Glasgow earlier this year, our school was entered into a competition to win an original illustration from one of the nominated books, and to our surprise and excitement we won! Here are some of our P1-4 class showing off the prize. The illustration is by Ben Cort, from the book Jumblebum by Chae Strathie, one of the pupils’ favourite reads.
South Kintyre primary schools’ annual Primary 7 relay took place yesterday at Campbeltown Grammar School Sports Day. Teams from Dalintober PS and Castlehill PS participated and Dalintober ‘A’ team were delighted to come first, with their ‘B’ team coming a very close third, behind Castlehill ‘A’.
Joint sports day at Minard
The children at Minard and Furnace Primaries enjoyed a lovely afternoon of sporting activities at Minard Primary school on Wednesday the 18th. Organised by our PE teacher, Mrs Floyd, the children were split into four teams and took part in a variety of events including ‘Jimmygymnastics’ ‘water archery’ and the space hopper relay!
On March 26th Small Isles Primary heard that the school had been nominated (as part of the Jura Lives project) for the Community Archive and Heritage Group Inspiration Award. On 12th June, it was announced at the annual conference of the Community Archive and Heritage Group that Jura Lives has been named Community Archives and Heritage Group Overall Winner 2014, and that Small Isles Primary’s Community Cafes received the ‘inspiration’ award.

Small Isles is proud to announce that our P7s successfully completed their cycling proficiency training on Thursday 19th June. It has taken two terms of regular training to get to this point, and to those of you who think that learning to ride a bike competently would be easy on Jura, we would say think again; a single track road has it’s own challenges, especially in tourist season. Well done P7s and a big thank you to Dorota, our instructor.
