The P1 and P3 class are learning all about lifeboats, lighthouses and the sea in their IDL project, The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. One of the many activities this week was visiting the Machrihanish Seabird Observatory and the Campbeltown Lifeboat Station. Last week we had a splendid afternoon in the company of Mr Hector Lamont, who was a lighthouse keeper at the Mull of Kintyre Lighthouse. Mr Lamont and his wife were stationed at the Mull of Kintyre Lighthouse about 6 miles from Southend School.

GO ROSNEATH!!!
We are very, very proud of our Cross Country runners. At the annual Cross Country Run for P6 and P7 pupils in Helensburgh this morning our little peninsula school sent 14 runners and gained 2 x 3rd places, 1 x 4th place, 1 x 5th place, 1 x 12th place and 1 x 13th place. What an achievement!! ALL our runners crossed that Finish Line to earn a well-deserved medal.
Comical Cars, Coffee and Cakes at Ashfield Primary
The pupils at Ashfield Primary School held a ‘Comical Cars, Coffee and Cakes’ event to raise money for Red Nose Day. Parents and friends were able to relax with a cuppa and some home baking while the children washed and polished their cars until they sparkled! The pupils ended up very soggy by the end of the afternoon but great fun was had by all and we managed to raise just over £200. Thank you to all who supported us and were brave enough to let the children wash your cars!
Rockfield Primary School “Design a Bag” Success!
Schools from the Oban area were invited by Tesco to enter a competition to design a bag to launch their new ‘Click and Collect’ service and Rockfield were lucky enough to have the winner in their school! Our winning designer got his logo printed onto reusable bags and every family in the school was given one for free. As well as this, he was also awarded a £25 gift card for himself to spend and a £250 cheque for the school. Well done!
Tarbert Academy, Rock up in red
Rock up in Red ~ healthy living event.
Local produce, Kintyre teamed up with NHS Highland as part of their Rocking Red Heart Road show to promote the health benefits of using good wholesome local food. Pupils from Tarbert Academy took advantage of this and all had a great time sampling food and listening to the Barrow Band play their songs about fresh fruit and vegetables.
Rockfield Primary School National Writing Competition
Some of our Primary 6 and 7 pupils were delighted to hear that they had been awarded prizes after taking part in a national writing competition. The children entered a writing competition organised by Scottish Ballet that was based on the story of Hansel and Gretel.
Lots of fantastic pieces of work were produced by the classes involved and lots of hard work and effort that was put into the pieces of writing so everyone was delighted when a letter arrived to the school to inform us that one of our pupils was a winner!

BBC visit Rockfield
The children in the Gaelic classes in Rockfield got a huge surprise last Monday when a crew from the BBC turned up at the school! The pupils had taken part in some filming for Gaelic television programme “Dè a nis?” earlier this year and were delighted to be told by the television presenters that out of 16 schools, the pupils from Rockfield were the fastest on space hoppers! Skipness News meets Campbeltown Courier
Skipness Pupils recently welcomed Campbeltown Courier’s reporter, Steven Flanagan, to help them prepare the latest edition of their newspaper. The Skipness News has been running since 1991 and has a large number of local and foreign readers. The pupils were given ‘top tips’ on how to improve their journalism skills. They were very grateful for Steven’s help and contributions.

Easdale Primary Pre 5 children raised a laugh this week. They were very busy making and icing cakes to sell in their Red Nose Cake Shop. The shopkeepers were a little scary as you can see from the photos. They raised a wonderful £24.
Barrow Band perform at Dalintober PS
Pupils at Dalintober PS were treated to a performance from ‘The Barrow Band’ today. The group promote healthy eating and were involved in an Open Day in the town’s Community Garden, but managed to find the time to fit in a visit to the school. Pupils loved their musical odes and we are sure plenty pupils went home singing about the positive effects of broccoli, kiwi fruit and carrots!

Parent Workshop Evening at Dalintober PS
A large number of parents of pupils at Dalintober Primary School attended Parent Workshops on two areas of the curriculum on Thursday 7th March. The workshops focussed on ‘Big Writing’ and ‘Active Maths’ and parents participated in activities and used resources that the pupils use in school. Miss Caroline Armour, Head Teacher, said, “We are delighted so many parents came along to participate in our Information Workshops.

Today at Kilmodan we are sporting our trainers on Commonwealth Day, as part of ‘Sport Your Trainers for Glasgow 2014’. This is part of a national campaign which asks people to wear their trainers as a symbolic gesture of support for Glasgow 2014. During our Commonwealth themed assembly we talked about the Commonwealth Games. There will be 71 nations and territories taking part in the games in July next year.

Book Week at Dalmally Primary School
Dalmally Primary celebrated world book day as part of a week-long series of activities relating to books. Children worked cooperatively to produce story books for younger children which they presented, designed new covers for traditional tales, and spent lots of time hearing different types of stories. We also had a book swap stall running for the week, giving us the chance to read new and different stories.

Sport Your Trainers Day at Dalintober PS
Sport Your Trainers 2013
Pupils and staff of Dalintober PS came to school ready for action in their trainers to support the Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014 campaign ‘Sport Your Trainers’. All classes participated in physical outdoor activities as part of their daily PE sessions.

Luing Big Brew
The children of Luing transformed their classroom into a cafe for a Big Brew. This is in connection to the Human Rights work that the children are taking forward and to support Fairtrade Fortnight. Linda Leggett, an island resident and Fairtrade Tradecraft stall holder, set up a stall in the classroom to offer the visitors an opportunity to make their purchases.
As ever, the islanders turned out in force to support not only the children but to show support for Fairtrade and a growing understanding of the human rights agenda.
World Book Day at St. Andrew’s Primary school
Pupils of St. Andrew’s Primary school celebrated World Book Day 2013 by dressing up as characters from their favourite books. They also brought in books they have read to swap with their classmates. This week’s homework task was to draw a picture of their favourite characters from a story, which were displayed on the whole-school World Book Day wall. A fun day was had by all!
Fairlyand
The children of Primary 2 in St Joseph’s Primary, Helensburgh really enjoyed their interdisciplinary topic on ‘Fairyland’. They met many fairyland characters and participated in a wealth of active learning experiences. The final outcome of the topic was open day for parents which was very successful. Parents participated in activities with their own children and wrote their positive comments in the visitors book.

3 Schools Samba!
Clachan,Glenbarr and Rhunahaorine Primary Schools are taking part in a six week samba session. We are all enjoying working with a talented local drummer, Mark MacSporran, who has been teaching us that WE LIKE TO EAT…. ICE CREAM !
