“P1/2 children at Taynuilt Primary have been learning all about dinosaurs. They decided to ask their parents and friends to come and see all their work so they opened up their classroom as a Dinosaur Museum. The children showed the visitors lots of models they had made, information and research gathered.

Fun in Fundraising at Barcaldine!
Barcaldine Primary School has been enjoying the opportunity to raise funds for two different charities as well as incorporating our cycling activities towards our Big Pedal competition.
Today we all dressed in yellow to raise money for Cancer Research. The money that we are donating will help the Marie Curie Nurses provide more free care to people with terminal illnesses in their own homes. Continue reading Fun in Fundraising at Barcaldine!
Barcaldine and Beavers!
Barcaldine Primary School was delighted to have Olwen Hemmings visit us from Knapdale this week.
We had a very interesting day, learning all about beavers. We got a chance to feel their fur, see a skull, have life-size images of beavers, learn about their diet and we even tried to be beavers and build our own dam!! We had an absolutely wonderful morning and thank Olly so much for coming to see us.
Barcaldine – Big Pedal 2013
Barcaldine Primary School are again participating in The Big Pedal 2013.
The Big Pedal is a giant inter-school virtual cycling competition running from 28th February until 20 March 2013. It works a bit like the Tour de France but in the UK we are following Sustrans cycle routes around Great Britain.
Second Green Flag for Dalintober PS
Dalintober Primary School received a second Green Flag from Eco-Schools Scotland for their work on sustainable education and making eco links within the community.
The school has been very lucky to have been granted an allotment site by ACHA in New Parliament Place and the Eco-Group and Committee have spent a lot of time and effort in working on the allotment and growing their own produce. This has been made even more enjoyable with the help of Mr Chris Holden and Mr Ryan Malone from Campbeltown Community Organic Garden.

Pupils at Lochnell Primary School were thrilled to receive a visit from Chris Thompson of Living Streets, who congratulated them on all the great work they had put in to their walk once a week campaign over the last two years. After informing them they had won an award for being school of the month, he set them the challenge of increasing the number of WOW (Walk once a Week) awards earned.

Barcaldine Primary School was very fortunate to have Sharon MacKechnie for the day on Monday 25th February.
We spent most of the day in Sutherland’s Grove completing a variety of challenges. Team work involved us leading our group through a chosen path. Castlehill Primary School Visit to Kintyre Recycling Ltd
Children from P5/6 recently visited Kintyre Recycling Ltd as part of their current Topic. They were shown what happens to the items that they collect in school to be recycled. They thoroughly enjoyed their tour of the plant and once back at school they worked in their cooperative groups to create models of the various recycling machines. These were then displayed in the classroom. Recycling is a large part of the Eco activities at Catlehill Primary School.
Taynuilt Nursery Eco Topic
Over the last 4 weeks Taynuilt Nursery have been looking at recycling both at home and in and around their Nursery. Kat the Grab lady visited with her friend Haggis the Crow to show the children how to reduce, reuse and recycle. They all made a composting bin for home and a bird table for their garden.

With the help of Barry Wilson, a resident on the Isle of Luing, the children have rededicated the tree in the garden in memory of the children and the teacher killed in Dunblane. The old sign had rotted away as it was staked into the soil at the base of the tree.

As part of the study on Scottish Castles, Luing primary went to Carnasserie Castle. The children had the castle to themselves so we had a magical day.
We investigated the castle and made sketches of what we found. We were able to use our own charcoal that we made in the fire pit at school.

Aspiring farmers at Toward Primary have recently been helping one of the local farmers scan his sheep to discover whether or not the sheep are in lamb and, if so, how many lambs they are going to have. They really enjoyed the experience and gained an insight into why farmers need to feed certain sheep at this time of year and why some get fed more than others according to how many lambs they are going to have. St Joseph’s P7 Trip to Ardlui
P7 of St Joseph’s Primary in Helensburgh arrived safely at Loch Lomond Outdoor Centre on Monday for their residential week of ‘outdoor learning’. After some refreshments, they were on course for a full day of activities. On offer for groups the first day was archery, hill walking and compass work. The children were enthralled by the hill-walking in particular as they were lead up the hills and passed by a waterfall, with one of the children describing the experience as ‘Epic’. Croftastic!
Tighnabruaich, Toward and Strachur Primary schools had an amazing day at Strachur Memorial Hall taking part in a Crofting Connections day.
There were various activities such as felting, quilting and willow and paper weaving. We enjoyed tasting fish and sea food and learning about the salmon’s life-cycle. We found out how to ‘waulk’ the cloth, card wool, use drop spindles, weave, and learned lots of sheep and wool facts. Continue reading crofting connections Strachur
Free fruit trees for Minard Primary
The children from Minard Primary School were delighted to receive an email this morning announcing their successful application for free orchard trees for their Garden of Tranquility. Stephen Mozier, Development Officer for ‘Grounds for Learning’ said they had had a huge response to their offer and only 100 schools in Scotland had been successful. Everyone is looking forward to receiving the apple and plum trees next month and feel they will be a fantastic feature for the garden.
Gruffalo Woodland Adventure leads to a John Muir Trust Award
The Primary Learning Centre pupils of Rockfield Primary, Oban have enjoyed learning outdoors over the last three months in partnership with the Stramash team. We based our activities around the woodland characters from the children’s classic story “The Gruffalo” by Julia Donaldson.

Mud Kitchen installed at Tighnabruaich Primary!
The Early Level class has been enjoying its newly installed Mud Kitchen. It is fitted with all mod cons (sink, microwave, pots & pans etc.) and using only the very finest ingredients the children have been busy making spicy soup and apple & mud cake. Best fun is going to the local supermarket (the nearby unfinished path) to collect the basic ingredient.
P1 parents visited last week and are off to look out more fixtures and fittings.
Today’s great excitement was the frozen mud and investigating the beautiful patterns it made.

Kilchrenan Walks Through The Past
Kilchrenan Primary have been exploring their Victorian heritage. With the help of Tara from Dunollie House, they have found out about a time when their village was bigger and more important than Oban, and how Oban only had one, very poor, inn for visitors. They discovered, in Dunollie House, a great resource for studying this, and many periods on local and Scottish history.
