Yesterday Miss Johnston’s and Mrs Wakefield’s Maths Setting class were learning how maths is used by sailors! Duncan Munro who is a Navigational Officer working in the Merchant Navy joined the class to tell them about his job with Seabourn Cruiseline and to teach them about compass points, bearings and degrees.

Oban High School Visit to HMS Blyth
Pupils of Oban High School were invited along to HMS Blyth, a Minesweeper with the Royal Navy which was in Oban for a few days. The Royal Navy gave the pupils a very informative tour of the ship and really enjoyed learning what life would be like as part of the crew on the HMS Blyth.
Chick-tastic P1 Assembly
Primary 1 pupils at Rosneath Primary School treated pupils, staff and families to a bright and wonderful assembly. The theme for their assembly was, of course, chicks! The children worked very hard to learn songs, poems and other speaking parts. To add a splash of colour the children wore yellow t-shirts and made chick masks. Two of our very own chicks, Joey and Chicky, even made an appearance at the assembly. Can you see how much they’ve grown?
Sensory Exploration @ Learning Centre, Rockfield
The pupils at the Learning Centre have explored a range of sensory materials and activities this term. These learning activities are a central part to learning within ASN and they are FUN!

Fairtrade Coffee Morning
On Friday the 6th of March we had a coffee morning to raise money for Fairtrade. All week, each class have been learning about Fairtrade so that we would know what Fairtrade is all about. P1/2 went down to the Co-op to hunt for Fairtrade products and P3/4 studied the journey of a banana. P5/6 wrote a persuasive piece text encouraging others for or against supporting Fairtrade and P6/7 made a Fairtrade cookbook. Every class also baked a cake using Fairtrade products.
Lismore Primary School Celebrity Cook Book
Lismore Primary School P5-P7 have just completed this term’s enterprise project holding a book launch for their Celebrity Cook Book with a Fairtrade Café on Friday 6th March. This is their report:
We decided to make and sell a recipe book to raise money for our Stramash Week at the end of May. The project started at the beginning of this term and we did it on Mondays and Fridays with Hazel, our classroom assistant.
BOAT BUILDING IN BOWMORE
As part of their Viking project the pupils of P2/3 were joined by parents, grandparents (and younger brothers) for the afternoon to build their own version of a traditional long ship.
St. Joseph’s Consult on the Local Hermitage Park Development
Representatives of the St Joseph’s Pupil Council and Eco Committee from P4, 5 & 6 went on a fact finding trip to the Victoria Halls last week.
Ambitious plans for the redevelopment of Hermitage Park were unveiled and the St Joseph’s pupils wanted to make sure that the interests of children just like them were heard.

World War 2 Day for Dalintober PS P7’s
P7 pupils of Dalintober PS rounded off their interdisciplinary learning task on World War 2 by dressing in clothes of the time and being pupils in the very strict Miss McCallum’s (Mrs Elise Glendinning) class, using slate boards and participating in a traditional street party. A group of pupils also discussed their learning experiences with Head Teacher, Miss Caroline Armour, and were able to talk articulately about their knowledge and understanding of their chosen theme. A great success!
Dalmally gets creative in the snow
Staff and pupils at Dalmally Primary School changed the recent bad weather into a learning opportunity. We challenged the children to create a “snow sculpture” (no snowmen allowed) using their ideas and imagination. They had to work well as a team, consulting and listening to each other whilst using snow and natural materials. In the end we had a snow angel, a castle, a volcano and an alien. The teachers took part too, although following a stewards inquiry were later disqualified, as you will note from the photo they did not entirely stick to the design brief!

Beach Schools
Clachan and Skipness Primary School have recently taken part in a six week block of Beach Schools with the Grab Trust. They carried out a beach clean and had a treasure hunt. The children made mobiles using different types of shells which they learned to identify. They also listened to a brilliant story-teller and made pictures on the beach. They really enjoyed building shelters, making fires, having hot chocolate made in a kelly kettle and toasting marshmallows!
Road Safety Calendar Competition
We are extremely pleased that 2 of our 4 pupils got recognition for the entries into the annual Road Safety Calendar Competition.
Connor Coombes won 1st place in his P4 category and Abi MacCorquodale received a Highly Commended in her P5 year group. June Graham, A&B Road Safety Officer popped in to hand over their pictures with certificates and a £25 voucher for Connor to spend at Amazon. Well done to both of you

Dalintober PS Allotment wins ACHA ‘Garden In Boom 2014’ Competition
Dalintober Primary School pupils and staff were delighted to hear that they had been awarded first prize in Argyll Community Housing Association’s ‘Garden In Bloom 2014’ competition, for a second year running. Members of the Mid Argyll & Kintyre Area Committee scored allotments independently and Dalintober’s allotment was judged the best. Members of the Eco-Group, staff and parent and partners have all helped to maintain the allotment, growing a wide range of fruit and vegetables which has been used in school meals and for ‘Green Days’. Dalintober PS would especially like to thank Chris Holden and Judy Martin for all their assistance.
A Very Special Visitor…..
Primary 1 pupils at Rosneath Primary school couldn’t believe their eyes when a very special visitor arrived in their classroom…it was Ziggy!! The boys and girls have been learning about road safety and how to stay safe at night when out and about in their local area. The children were very excited to meet Ziggy and share their learning with him

St Andrew’s Primary School’s Third Green Flag!
St Andrew’s Eco Committee met with Paula Love, the Eco Schools Assessor, and informed her of all the hard work put in by the pupils, staff, parents and community members to maintain the Eco School status. After an initial meeting to discuss what has been happening in our school, from weekly litter picking duties to organised days like UNICEF’s Day of Change, the Eco Committee sang our Eco Code; complete with the newly choreographed actions.

Kirn Primary Presents Cheque to EnviroKirn
Pupils at Kirn Primary presented Mrs. Marion Morrison of EnviroKirn with a cheque for £60. This money was raised by pupils at Kirn on their recent “Green Day”.
Kirn’s Eco Committee is made up of pupils from P2 to P7, who meet regularly to think of ways to raise awareness of environmental and community projects which are ongoing in and around Kirn.
North Bute Primary Beach Clean
All of the pupils of North Bute Primary School were out at their local beach to clean it up and make their local community a litter free place to be. Beachwatch Bute got us organised and with some parent help, the pupils made a huge difference to the sea shore. We spotted local biodiversity whilst we cleaned, and yes, we did whistle while we worked!
St. Mun’s Primary Scoop Prestigious Eden Award!
St. Mun’s Primary School were awarded the prestigious Rolls-Royce Science Prize Eden Award, at the 10 year Anniversary Award Ceremony, held on 10th November at London’s Science Museum. The Rolls-Royce Science Prize is an annual awards programme that helps teachers implement science teaching ideas in their schools and colleges. The Prize recognises and rewards excellence in Science teaching across the full spectrum of teaching, from special education needs to high ability pupils. It also promotes innovative and sustainable strategies for teaching science which addresses a specific need in the schools or colleges and at the same time contributes to teachers’ continuing professional development. Scottish Cup winner Kara Called Up for West of Scotland.
Kara Chalmers an S2 pupil from DGS has been chosen to play for the West of Scotland U15 girls football team. Kara, who is a member of the U13s Celtic side that achieved Scottish Cup success earlier this month, has been playing football for three years and was delighted with the call up to the West of Scotland squad. Kara who plays right midfield for ‘The Hoops’ was surprised when her dad received an email informing him of Kara’s inclusion in the squad – a squad that is mainly made of girls from the greater Glasgow area and who are a year older than Kara.
Kara stated: “I skimmed over the email and at first thought I had not been included in the West of Scotland squad. I was then exstatic when my dad pointed out that infact I was part of the squad! I’m just ready to get playing!”
