Skye’s Big Haircut!
Last Friday the pupils and staff of Dunoon Primary School came to school with crazy hairstyles for ‘Mad Hair Day’! The school was supporting Skye, a P6 pupil who recently had her lovely long hair cut off to donate to the charity the Little Princess Trust. The Trust provides real-hair wigs to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland that have sadly lost their own hair through cancer treatment.
Pupils who wanted to join in brought a donation for the charity and on the day the school managed to raise a total of £146.14!

DPS Commonwealth Concert
Dunoon Primary hosted a spectacular Commonwealth Grand Concert on Tuesday 24th June. The Concert began with a parade of all the countries and the choir then sang ‘Heres to our Commonwealth’. P1 – P7 then followed with a selection of songs relating to their chosen Commonwealth Country.
Dancing their socks off!
Lochgilphead Primary 2 and Primary 3/2 classes have been dancing their socks off! As part of their topic this term these classes joined up to learn about different styles of dance. Children learned basic moves for merengue, hip hop and waltz then choreographed their own dance sequence. As a culmination of the topic the children put on a dance show for parents, families and friends. It was an enormous success and the children and audience loved every minute of it. Bowling Club Visit
Pupils from Garelochhead Primary School enjoyed a visit to Garelochhead Bowling Club recently.
The Primary 2 class went along to the club as part of their interdisciplinary learning on the Commonwealth Games. Club members Mr Kjorstad and Mr Leishman taught them about the rules, the object of the game and the equipment that you need to play.
Safety at Sea
As we are learning about the Sea this term, Achaleven Primary took up the kind offer from the volunteers at RNLI Oban Lifeboat to visit and learn all about the work they do. We had great fun trying on all the safety gear and seeing all the equipment that is on board the boat. Following on from this trip we have decided that we want to help raise money for RNLI next year. Thank you to the volunteers who took the time to show us around. Thanks also to Alba Sailing for lending us life jackets for our trip.
Stramash visit Barcaldine Primary
Stramash visited us again last week however this time we got to stay in our own playground. We were joined by Achaleven primary School pupils and Rob from Stramash delivered a PE session with all the children. We certainly had a beautiful day for it and we actually had to take shelter because it was so hot.
St. Joseph’s children always happy to help!
The children and parents of St Joseph’s were delighted to lend a hand to Helensburgh Rotary Club’s Aquabox Appeal last term. This year the children were not asked to bring in small toiletry items etc. as in previous years but to collect money to assist in buying an Aquabox which was already full of essential items for those people in third world countries. St Joseph’s gladly embraced the request and held a non-uniform day solely for the purpose of raising funds for the appeal.

Dalintober Pre-5 ‘Big Toddle’ for Barnardo’s
The boys and girls of Dalintober PS Pre-5 Unit recently took part in a ‘Big Toddle’ for Barnardo’s – raising a fantastic total of £1010.
Barcaldine do Onesie Day
Barcaldine Primary School participated in the Sunday Mail’s Centenary Fund Onesie Day fundraising event. The children all came into school wearing their onsies!! We had a variety of animals like a bear, frog, rabbit and cheetah as well as angry bird and batman. The children raised £50 on the day. The Centenary Fund raises money for 17 different charities and their target this year was to reach 1 million pounds.
Bunessan War Memorial
The P5,6,7 class in Bunessan Primary have worked hard to raise money to refurbish the War Memorial which stands just outside their playground. The children have been completely overwhelmed by the support they received for this project and last week stage one of the refurbishment was completed when Oban Memorials were able to clean the stone and repaint the letters. Ross Kirsop kindly donated the scaffolding and the Fire Brigade made sure that there was enough water for the pressure washer.
Roots of Empathy at Dunoon Primary
This session, Primary 3 have been involved in an exciting new initiative called Roots of Empathy. Throughout the year there have been weekly visits from the instructor Ailsa Dominic, Early Years & Family Support Worker and every three weeks a visit from a mother and baby, Kym and Harris Byron.

Victorians in Rothesay
P5/6 have been studying the Victorians this term and we have found that Rothesay was very much developed by the Victorians. We worked with Paul Duffy from Brandanii Archaeology and Heritage to explore the town. We studied maps from as early as the 1350s to see the changes in Rothesay. Champions Campbeltown Pupils Visit Dalintober PS
Campbeltown Pupils’ Manager Norman Thomson visited Dalintober Primary last week with two of his squad members, John McCallum and Stuart Crossan, to take part in a Q & A and coaching session with the school football players and referees. They also brought along the League Trophy they recently secured and their medals. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the visit and we look forward to welcoming them back for future coaching sessions. Playground Art At St. Mun’s
P.6. pupils have been using their art creativity skills to enhance the school fencing with old inner tubes woven into the mesh to make fun images. Bicycle inner tubes are a waste product which can be difficult to dispose of, so recycling is a great solution.
The pupils have also been working in groups across the school and have lots of ideas about what to do next. So watch this space for next session! They are ‘tyred’ out after all this effort and are all looking forward to a great break!
Generation Science visit Barcaldine Primary
The children of Barcaldine Primary School recently had the Generation Science team visit them to do a workshop. The Marvellous Magnets workshop was thoroughly enjoyed by all the children. We were transported into the mysterious world of magnets and we had fun being the scientist and being able to learn about magnetic attraction and repulsion as well and fields and poles. We explored how magnetic forces have an effect on our world like the magnetic Poles and the Northern lights.
Strone Primary win illustration prize!
When our P1-3 pupils at Strone Primary School attended the Scottish Book Trust Awards in Glasgow earlier this year, our school was entered into a competition to win an original illustration from one of the nominated books, and to our surprise and excitement we won! Here are some of our P1-4 class showing off the prize. The illustration is by Ben Cort, from the book Jumblebum by Chae Strathie, one of the pupils’ favourite reads.
Barcaldine Primary and Stramash
Last week the children from Barcaldine Primary School had two excursions with Stramash. On Tuesday the children enjoyed a hiking adventure and went along to Ben Lora in Benderloch. The weather wasn’t kind to us but we managed to reach the viewpoint without too much mud on our wellies. On Thursday we were taken along to Loch Creran where we went canoeing. The children had a ball and we even found a starfish! Thanks very much to Stramash for two amazing days.
Dalintober PS Win Inter-Schools Relay
South Kintyre primary schools’ annual Primary 7 relay took place yesterday at Campbeltown Grammar School Sports Day. Teams from Dalintober PS and Castlehill PS participated and Dalintober ‘A’ team were delighted to come first, with their ‘B’ team coming a very close third, behind Castlehill ‘A’.
Dunoon Primary P7s Leavers Dance
P7s at Dunoon Primary have been very busy in the last few weeks planning and organising their “Summer” themed Leavers Dance. Working in small committees the children took everything into consideration: invites, advertising, decorations, music, food and photography.
