Here’s what we’ve been up to in P7b this week…

Literacy and English

Our key focus this week has been our class talks, on an aspect of World War II that particularly interests us. We carefully selected and summarised our personal projects, contributing a number of relevant ideas, information and knowledge when engaging confidently with our audience. Our presentations were clear, expressive, organised and delivered in a logical order with an introduction, main part and conclusion. Cue cards and brief notes were used to prevent us from ‘reading’ our talk and we used signposts to give a basic structure. We are continuing to enhance our communication and ability to engage others through appropriate use of eye contact, body language, emphasis, pace and tone. The props and resources we used were thought-provoking, and we allowed opportunities for the audience to interact during our presentations. There was a marked improvement in our use of higher order questioning which promoted further discussion and interaction at the conclusion of our talks. Mr. Logan was blown away by the standard of our presentations, and was thrilled to see such a vast improvement in our confidence levels.

Numeracy and Mathematics

We have been continuing to investigate the order of operations, using the BODMAS acronym to remind ourselves of this. Having consolidated our learning of the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), we are now applying this learning further when tackling varied expressions and equations. We have introduced how brackets can change the emphasis when carrying out calculations and have demonstrated our understanding of this concept through verbalising our ways of thinking and strategies utilised. Next week we will continue to work on this with Mrs. Doran whilst beginning to study weight and measure with Mr. Logan.

Health and Wellbeing

On Monday we welcomed Michelle into class from West Lothian’s Drug and Alcohol Service. She is their Young People’s Tobacco Prevention Worker and discussed the negative impacts that smoking and tobacco can have on our health. We shared some of our prior knowledge on the subject and were given the opportunity to further develop our understanding of this topic. P7b were shocked by the facts, statistics and information she shared in our first workshop but understand the impact that these substances can have on our health. We have a greater knowledge of the ways that culture, the media and peer groups can influence our own decisions and risk-taking behaviour, and we are learning to manage this. Did you know there are 4,000-5,000 chemicals and toxins in a single cigarette? And, smoking 20 cigarettes per day costs people around £3,000 per year? As a result, we have all pledged to give up one thing we can’t live without for a week and replace it with a healthy alternative. We will report back to Michelle with our progress next Monday. Will the Xboxes, PS4s, sweets and fizzy juice make way for outdoor play, water and fruit? We shall see…

Numeracy and Mathematics

This week we have continued to consolidate our learning of the four operations by using written methodology for long division. The children have been using two standard written methods for this, showing their working at all times to evidencing their thinking and strategies used. Following on from this, Mrs. Doran introduced us to the order of operations on Thursday using the BODMAS acronym (brackets, of, divide, multiply, add, subtract) where we were able to apply our previous learning to solve problems.

Literacy and English

The atmosphere was tense in class on Wednesday as we came to the end of our class novel, ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’. We were both shocked and saddened by the way in which the story concluded, and strongly agreed that no other human being should ever be discriminated against for their race, religion or skin colour. At Springfield, we try to promote our core value of respect and celebrate the diverse world that we live in. In grammar last week, we consolidated our learning of using a thesaurus to find synonyms and up-level pieces of written text. Most groups have come to the end of their group novel and have now selected a text of their choice to study between now and the end of term. The children can read this at their own pace, and will be posing literal, inferential and evaluative questions based on these using our Yammer discussion groups. Please ensure they take some time at home to read this each week, with the target being to complete it by the end of term. Class talks start next week, and I am greatly looking forward to the children’s presentations on an aspect of World War II.

World War II

I am hugely impressed with the level of creativity shown in making P7b’s Anderson and Morrison shelters over the last three weeks for homework. These are now proudly displayed in our classroom for everyone to see, showcasing the children’s hard work to present such wonderful, and realistic models. Please have a look at them in the photos below, I’m sure you’ll agree that they’re fantastic! We also extended our knowledge of rationing this week; taking brief notes in our own words as we watched some archive footage from the Imperial War Museum and organised this information to identify key points for a ‘Rationing Fact File’.

Health and Wellbeing

Our taster sessions for rugby and golf continued this week as we further develop our skills in both activities. We have two more weeks of golf lessons to follow and one week of rugby. Thank you to our coaches Ross and Dougie from Linlithgow Rugby Club, and Jane and Stewart from the SG Foundation for providing this opportunity. In P.E, we carried out our fitness circuits and have been enjoying playing rounders now that the better weather has arrived. Here’s hoping for some more fun in the sun next week. On Thursday we heard from Aileen who visited us from Stramash to deliver a presentation about our residential visit to Oban in a couple of weeks. We can’t wait to go now! Finally, a huge well done to both our footballers and cheerleaders who represented the school magnificently today at the George Allan tournament at Linlithgow Rose’s ground. What a talented group of children we have in P7b, you fill me with pride boys and girls.

Golf Galore

Over 35 of our P7 pupils enjoyed their second session of golf at Kingsfield Golf Range today, provided by the Stephen Gallacher Foundation. The boys and girls who attended were working on their chipping this week, using wedges and lofted clubs. We started off with a game of ‘Rory Says’, which followed the same rules as ‘Simon Says’, to get warmed-up before splitting off into teams of 3 for a competition. Each player had to hit towards a small square target 15 yards away, with the aim being to land the ball inside this zone. If we were successful, we had to place one of the golf balls behind us on the noughts and crosses board to earn points for our team. It was great fun, and a huge thanks again to Jane and Stewart our coaches for all their hard work in planning and delivering these sessions!

Football News

It was a successful weekend for SF and P7b and NP in P7a, as they both competed in the local derby match between a Linlithgow schools select and Bo’ness schools select. Linlithgow came out victorious and you can see the boys pictured below with the trophy. SF and NP are just two of our talented footballers we have at Springfield Primary School, who’ll also be representing us in the George Allan tournament this Sunday 20th May at Prestonfield. Kick off is at 9.00am if any of our pupils, parents, carers and families would like to come along and cheer the boys and girls on!

Well done you two! A great achievement and one you should both be extremely proud of!

Numeracy

This week in Numeracy we have been:

  • Rounding whole numbers to the nearest 1000, 10 000 and 100 000
  • Rounding decimal fractions to the nearest whole number, to one decimal place and two decimal places
  • Multiplying whole numbers by two digit numbers
  • Multiplying decimal fractions to two decimal places by a single digit
  • Solving word problems using written methods for all four functions

Literacy

This week in Literacy we have been:

  • Making relevant notes using our own words to prepare a presentation on ways in which people remained safe during air raids and bombings in WWII
  • Presenting our findings to our peers using appropriate vocabulary, eye contact, body language, emphasis, pace and tone of voice
  • Responding to a range of questions, including literal, inferential
    and evaluative questions based on WWII air raids
  • Writing a Lion King recount which describes our own experiences as well as our thoughts and feelings about the success of the performance

Learning Across the Curriculum

This week we have also been:

  • Continuing to develop our physical fitness through our circuit activities
  • Attending golf sessions with the Stephen Gallagher Foundation at Kingsfield Golf Range
  • Participating in rugby taster sessions delivered by Linlithgow Rugby Club
  • Extending our knowledge of a range of career opportunities through attendance at the Careers Fayre on Tuesday evening
  • Working collaboratively with our Pupil Voice Committees during session 4 to further develop work carried out across school

FORE!

Today 36 of our P7 pupils attended the first of four golf sessions with the Stephen Gallagher Foundation at Kingsfield Golf Range. The coaches Stewart and Jane introduced them to iron shots using the GASP strategy for approaching the ball before hitting it; Grip, Aim, Stance and Posture. The children ensured their left hand was at the top of the club with their thumb pointing down. They then placed their right hand over the left to cover their left thumb. As they stood over the ball, their toes and tummy pointed where they wanted the ball to go and they ensured their feet were shoulder width apart. Finally, they bent their knees slightly and ensured their bottom was sticking out slightly!

The children were given time to practise their swing by aiming towards a net before taking part in a competition to finish the lesson. Points were given for accuracy, height and length. We’re very excited for next week when we will be driving the ball! Look at the photos of us in action below…

  • Established the difference between a pattern (shapes) and a sequence (numbers)
  • Explained and used rules to extend well known number sequences including square numbers, triangular numbers and Fibonacci sequences
  • Applied knowledge of multiples, factors and square numbers to generate and continue number sequences
  • Challenged peers to solve our own pattern and sequence problems

Literacy

  • Completed our personal projects on an aspect of WWII and received our feedback
  • Beginning to summarise our personal projects ahead of our class talks
  • Carried out research on the blitz in Scotland and how this affected those in Glasgow and the surrounding areas
  • Used the Literacy Box for comprehension challenges and consolidated our learning of grammatical rules and punctuation
  • Began reading and exploring the themes within our new WWII related class novel, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

  • Completed a fitness circuit with various activities and exercises
  • Recorded and tracked our progress using score sheets at each of the 8 stations
  • Football team trained in preparation for this year’s George Allan tournament on Sunday 20th May, 7-a-side games with a formation/shaping focus
  • Netball girls participated in their final league meeting of the year, finishing 3rd in the cluster league standings
  • MF and LC successfully led our Cheerleading after school club for their younger peers ahead of their showcase event

Skills for Learning, Life and Work

  • We welcomed Mr. Vereker into class to speak about his job in rope access
  • Mr. Matheson also visited us to speak about his job as Software Writer
  • Putting together our list of professionals and local businesses ahead of our P7 Careers Fayre on 1st May at 6pm

Lion King

  • Final preparations and rehearsals taking place for our Lion King performances at Linlithgow Academy next Tuesday and Wednesday evenings
  • All tickets now sold out for the Tuesday evening and a very limited number remaining for Wednesday

Numeracy and Mathematics

Capacity – ‘the maximum amount something can contain’
Volume  – ‘the space that an object or substance occupies’

We’ve been reminding ourselves of the difference between these terms this week and building on our learning from last week. On Monday and Tuesday we rotated round a carousel of activities; estimating volume, measuring volume, converting between different units of measurement and ordering volumes by size. Robbie proved to be the most accurate estimator of volume as he found 500ml and 750ml of water exactly. On Wednesday we all became baristas as we made some mocktails. We had to carefully follow each recipe to ensure we included exactly the right amount of each coloured juice. Having made the mocktails from the menu, we concocted our own and named it! We found there to be a number of factors that could influence the accuracy of our measurements, and we improved as we progressed through the recipes.

Next week we will be consolidating our learning of written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Health and Wellbeing

Our brains were put to the test again this week in football. We worked with a partner to carry out some mirrored dribbling exercises. One person had a football whilst their partner was the leader. As the leader moved, the other person had to mimic this, e.g. they move forwards = move back, to their right = move left. We then switched the roles and the person dribbling became the leader. Mr. Logan noticed we were getting the hang of this, so our footballs were exchanged for tennis balls with a focus on using the sole of the foot to manipulate a smaller object. We finished with some 2v2 attacking and defending situations and will progress to 2v1 attacking scenarios next week. Have a look at SF and RWi below as they demonstrate mirrored dribbling with a tennis ball.

In Health and Wellbeing, we also finished with our series of lessons focusing on internet safety. This week’s lesson was called ‘Codebreaker’ and we were tasked with trying to create strong passwords. Firstly, we were given two random children and some basic details about them. From the clues provided we had to make reasoned guesses as to what their passwords would be. The fact that we were able to do so highlighted the importance of using random combinations of upper case letters, lower case letters, numbers and symbols to create passwords which are difficult to predict. We have a greater understanding of how to protect our online accounts and data, and it was interesting how many people said they would be changing some passwords when they got home.

Fairtrade

Mr. Logan was delighted to see that everyone had made the effort to dress down in something wacky in support of Fairtrade on Friday. The costumes and outfits were brilliant, and made it very tricky to choose 5 winners. MF was given 5th place for her banana costume effort and AS was 4th in her Hawaiian gear. HR scooped 3rd place for his random assortment of dressing gown, school tie, sunglasses and cap whilst AE-C was second with too many hair baubles to count! Our class winner was RD who took bright colours and wackiness to a whole new level. Well done everyone! Great effort for a great cause!

World War II

We began our studies of World War II this week to much excitement from the class. Hearing the radio broadcast from Neville Chamberlain declaring war on Germany really made us think about the emotions people would have felt at this time in 1939. Having listened to this, we carried out some research on the Allies and Axis, countries within these factions and who their leaders were. It was noted that in 1940, Great Britain changed Prime Minister to Winston Churchill whilst Russia, or the Soviet Union, changed allegiances after a surprise invasion. We finished the week by sketching World War II leaders with Mrs. Doran. This was tricky as we were only given half of the leaders picture and had to sketch what we thought the other half would look like. You’ll see these displayed in class soon, so come and have a look!
