P1a’s pancakes, trains and 80’s

Another busy week in P1a. We made and tasted pancakes with Mrs Woolsley, Mrs Anderson and Mrs Stapleton. It was a lot of fun, and we thought they tasted better than the ones in the shops.

In IDL we further explored transport by looking at the history of trains. We loved learning about the locomotive, steam engines and how they work, and the bullet train. We then designed our own train. Don’t they look fantastic!

In literacy this week we met our first trigraph – igh, we learnt that this goes in the middle of words like might, bright etc This is a very tricky one for us so we will need lots of practice. We also learnt the other way to make this sound -y, as in cry, fly etc this is also quite tricky! Our common words were said and come, they were ones we have been seeing in our reading books so are quite familiar with them. Look at the words we built using scrabble tiles…this is another good way to practise word building at home! It also reminds us of what the capital letters look like.

In numeracy we continued our work with the subtraction fact families. We are starting to get a really good grasp on this concept, but quite a few of us are not readily recognising the addition and subtraction signs, we are getting tricked when there are different signs! Lost more practise needed. In Money this week we read a lovely book called The Great Pet Sale. Here is a cute clip of a grandad reading it to his grandchild.

We then did our own pet sale where everyone brought in a toy pet, we made price tags and then we had to count out the right coins to buy our pet. It was a lot of fun…we think some of us will be trying this at home!

On Thursday we had a great time for 80’s day! We thought it was the best lunchtime ever as we got music in the dining hall and in the playground! Mrs Gordon also taught us a couple of dances from Fame, we were so good we could maybe stand in for the p6/7’s! Look at our fabulous costumes and the amazing 80’s show and tell items. We really enjoyed learning about the 80’s!

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a.

P4A Blog

On Monday we were excited to have our first session of hockey with Fraser from Falkirk & Linlithgow Hockey Club. We learned how to hold a hockey  stick and that we use the flat side of the stick to hit the ball. Mrs Donald was very impressed by how well we managed to keep the ball under control when taking part in relay races and corners games.
In numeracy we have continued to work on our 6 and 9 times tables. We were able to discuss lots of different strategies to help us with this. Mrs Doyle showed us a clever trick using our fingers to work out the 9 times table. Ask us to show you!
In our Emotions Works lessons we have been thinking about the green behaviour cog. This cog helps us think about how we display our different emotions using our voice, body and actions. We linked our learning about the first four cogs together to complete an emotions storyboard.
In Science we have been learning about the water cycle with Mrs Begarnie. We showed our understanding of a water drop’s journey by either writing a story or creating a piece of artwork.
Thursday was 80s day which we loved! Everyone’s outfits were amazing and we got a chance to really show them off at the fashion show. We learnt what life was like in the 80s, everything from cars, toys, music, inventions and important events such as Live Aid. We also took part in a Jane Fonda workout in the hall!
As mentioned last week, we have started constructing our 3D Viking longhouses. After careful planning, we are choosing our materials wisely and really enjoying the challenge. Take a sneak peak at some of our work…

Finally, this was our last week with Mrs Donald and Mrs Fleming. We are looking forward to having Mrs Rutter as our new teacher from Monday onwards.

We have been busy this week in literacy, planning our comic strips. We have chosen our favourite infant  books to summarise and read to primary 1.  As next Thursday is World Book day, we have written invitations to invite Primary 1 up to our classroom , which we are going to transform into a cozy reading area.

We are helping to develop play in our school grounds and are training up to help teachers in infants lead mental health and yoga  activities outside. We are evaluating the activities with Mrs Tulloch and will be adapting them to suit our grounds and pupils.

Thursday was 80’s day!  Our costumes were brilliant. We all looked amazing and really got into the groove with a dancing parade round the gym hall. There were quite a few enthusiastic teachers.  In class we danced the “macareena”.

We played 80’s games in the playground helped by Primary 7 and did a ” Jane Fonda ” type work out in the hall led by the sport’s captains.

We played 80’s music while we worked. For maths, we played musical chairs before then tackling a  chair problem for rabbit and hedgehog. We also did problem solving on Tuesday, ” Pooch Police”,  where we had to recognise and explain patterns and relationships. Here is the extension challenge for anyone who would like to try it. Using the the numbers 1,3, and 5 make three digit numbers to make 999 . We will put the solution at the end of the blog.

Primary 6 continue to work hard on Fame. The dress rehearsal went well at the Academy and now we have a better idea about the spacing, layout, exits etc.  Photographs are being taken on Monday and then we will have a full dress reheasal at the Academy on Tuesday. I know we are all looking forward to the show next week and look forward to showing you our efforts.

We continued making our Sphero assault courses. We are hoping to programme them next week to complete the courses. We will need to reassess some of the moves as there are tight corners and some uneven surfaces to travel across.

Solution 153 +315=999       and   351+135=999

Have a good weekend.

P7a, FAME, Skiing and singing

This week has been a very busy week, with rehearsals for Fame happening every day and our technical rehearsal at Linlithgow Academy on Wednesday.

On Tuesday we had our third skiing lesson, everyone is having great fun and the weather has been beautiful.

In numeracy we have been using our skills in real life contexts, this has helped us make connections between, and through, our learning. We have also been honing our mental skills using our knowledge of doubles and near doubles.

80’s day saw us exploring life during the 1980’s, inventions, toys, cars and historical events. Our sports leaders led a Jane Fonda type workout and we took part in a fashion parade- we did look amazing (even if we do say so ourselves!)

We are looking forward to our performances of Fame next week and hope to see you all there.

Happy Weekend 🙂

Pop!

We have been busy this week learning in Literacy, Maths, Science and Art. One of our favourite activities this week was creating our own Pop Art pictures. If you read on you will see our amazing work!

In Literacy we have looked at magic ‘e’ and some of us have been revising our common words. We have been learning ‘o-e’ and the sound that this makes in words. We watched Geraldine the Giraffe who helped us at first with the ‘o-e’ sound. We were even able to think of our own words and make them using our magnetic boards. We have played different games this week to help us practise them such as board games and class Pictionary. Some of us played Snap with our common words which was really fun. This is helping us to recognise our common words. We even had the chance to write our common words on the board to see what letters were below and above the line. In our writing we did explanation writing about our favourite toy. We watched a clip called ‘Spot’s Favourite Toy’ which we enjoyed watching. We then had to think about our favourite toy and drew these in our jotters. We also created our own title for our writing. The next day we wrote about our favourite toy. We had to make sure that we were explaining why it was our favourite toy so we had to include different reasons. Using joining words such as because helped us to do this. We did really well checking over our work and looking back at our success criteria.

In Numeracy and Mathematics we have been looking more closely at the link between subtraction and addition. As well as this we have been revising our subtraction topic. We have looked over the different words for subtraction, bridging 10, missing numbers and subtracting using teen numbers. We liked playing the ladder game where we were asked different questions and if we got the answer right we went into the trees. We got so many right that we ended up in the clouds!

In Science with Mrs Bergarnie we tried to identify mystery powders by looking at what happened to them when they were added to water. We predicted what might happen then carried out the experiment. We noticed that the flour went cloudy, the icing sugar dissolved and the baking powder went foamy.

This week in Art we were creating images using different materials (oil pastel and crayon). We looked at Pop Art, specifically the artist Andy Warhol. We discussed the use of colour and pattern used in these pictures. We noticed that his pictures repeat themselves and Pop out at you! We created our own Andy Warhol style pictures using different toys. We could choose from a tablet, robot or teddy bear. We used bright colours to make sure our pictures would be eye catching.

The whole school had an 80’s themed day on Thursday. We had a fashion show, played 80’s games, listened to 80’s music and we even learned about 80’s toys. We had lots of fun. Check out our 80’s gear!

We have also had fun with our Numicon tuff tray…

We hope you enjoy the weekend. See you soon!

Primary 6 – w/e 28th February 2020

This week has been a very busy week, with rehearsals for Fame happening every day and our technical rehearsal at Linlithgow Academy on Wednesday.

In literacy, we explored inference through a text about Theodore Roosevelt and the story of the ‘teddy bear’.

In maths we have begun to look at money and during 80’s day we looked at the cost of living in the 1980’s compared to today.

80’s day also saw us exploring life during the 1980’s, inventions, toys, cars and historical events.

We are looking forward to our performances of Fame next week.

Happy Weekend

Kind regards

We love 80s (P2B)

This week P2B went back in time to the 80s! On Thursday we had a whole school 80s day! We came to school in fancy dress, participated in an 80s fashion show and completed a Jane Fonda workout!

In class, we learned about toys in the 80s. We watched a video about toys in the 80s and then we designed our own 80s toys! We created new pound puppies, rubik’s cubes, care bears, glo worms and transformers. At the end of our lesson, we played some 80s video games such as Pac-Man and Space Invaders. Miss Harrison wasn’t very good at Pac-Man!

During PE on Thursday we played some 80s games. We played Stick in the Mud, Kerby (using marking spots), Wall-y and Please Mr Crocodile.

This week our new sound was ‘o-e’ and we were also revising our common words. We made ‘o-e’ words, played an ‘o-e’ spelling game, played ‘Snap’ to identify and read our common words and we made our common words on our magnetic boards. Some of us have been writing our common words during play.

In writing this week we learned to write an explanation. On Tuesday, we listened to a story called ‘Spot’s Favourite Toy’ and we discussed our own favourite toys. We drew pictures of our favourite toys and on Wednesday, we learned how to write an explanation. In our writing, we explained why our chosen toy was our favourite toy. We used joining words to link our ideas and we put our ideas in a clear order.

In our Short Read lesson we watched a video about how Lego is made. Using what we had learned from the video, we read a text and identified the silly words. We worked together to suggest a sensible word to replace the silly word.

This week we finished our work on subtraction. Using our knowledge of number bonds and different subtraction strategies, we completed two subtraction to 20 assessments. Our scores were so good that we are going to move on to learning about money next week! In Number Talks, we explored different number sentences and explained which strategy we used. For example, when solving 6+6 we used the strategy ‘Doubles’. When completing ‘9+7’ some of us used ‘Counting On’ or ‘Making a Friendly Number’. Miss Harrison has been very impressed with how well we can explain our addition and subtraction strategies.

In Expressive Arts this week, we explored the work of Andy Warhol. We looked at Pop Art and discussed the use of repeated images, repeated patterns and bright colours. Miss Harrison showed us some of his Toy Series paintings. Afterwards, we created our own Pop Art toy images.

In Science with Mrs Begarnie, we were investigating mystery powders by looking at what happened when the powder was added to water. The flour went cloudy, the icing sugar dissolved and the baking powder was foamy.

Thank you very much for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

P3B Kilted tatties!

We had a fantastic visit from one of our parents; Mrs Schofield, who is a kilt maker to trade.  She brought in samples of tartan and explained how the cloth was made into a kilt.  To demonstrate this she brought in a sample kilt and also a length of material, 5 meters long which was the amount needed to make a kilt for a child or a lady.  To make a kilt for a man you would need 7 meters.  It was so big that we all had to go outside the classroom into the corridor so we could lay it flat.  Mrs Schofield demonstrated how the kilt is folded to make pleats for the back of the kilt.  It is very important that the tartan is folded in the correct place so the pattern of the kilt looks correct.   We then went back in time to learn about the “great kilt” which was used by the highlanders.  It consisted of a large piece of material which was wrapped around the wearer and held in place with a belt and a clasp.  Mrs Schofield used Mr Ritchie as a model to demonstrate the different way the great kilt could be used to carry things, as a raincoat and a blanket.  The great kilt was made from wool so was very hard wearing, very warm and also waterproof as long as it did not get too wet.  We all really enjoyed our visit.

We have also been looking at the history of tartan and how it is woven on big looms.  Traditionally you can use up to eight different colours to make the design linked to the different Scottish clans.  Using this information we then designed our own tartan and have modelled the kilts in the classroom using our “kilted tatties”.  Our display looks as if the tatties are all dancing in their amazing tartan kilts!

In Science we have been looking at how glass is made.  We learned about the manufacturing process and the different things glass can be used for.  We then designed information posters to explain the process for display in the classroom.

In Maths we have started to look at subtraction using the column or “chimney” method.  We have learned that sometimes we need to exchange or borrow a 10 from the 10s place value column and add it to the units column to enable the number to be subtracted.  We have found it quite tricky but Mr Ritchie has given us a catchy saying to help us remember about knocking on the door of the “bank of tens and asking if we borrow any, and if we can we are not greedy as we only want to borrow one ten”.

We are continuing to read our class novel “Flash the Sheep Dog” by Kathleen Fidler and we have just learned that Tom has received his new sheep dog puppy called Flash.  We are all looking forward to hearing about what happens next!

Mr Ritchie and the tiggerrific P3B’s

Vikings are still present in P4B

We have had the usual busy time in P4B over the past 2 weeks with a nice little break in between. We are now busy preparing for our assembly which is a week today. We are looking forward to showing you what we have been learning. We have been finding out about Viking longships and also longhouses. We have designed our own longships and they are fantastic. Instructions have been written explaining what we needed and then step by step how we did it. We also did a comprehension exercise on longships. This week we learnt how to take notes from a video clip on longhouses. We all paid attention and listened very well. Next week we will be designing our own longhouses, so if you have any shoe boxes or that sort of shape box they will be gratefully received. We enjoyed creating Wanted posters for a naughty Viking. Some great portraits as well.
In Maths we have started learning about what change to give from £1, £2 and £5 and what coins and notes we would need for our change.
P.E has involved learning skills for playing volley ball which will continue for the next few weeks and next week we start on a block on hockey as well. At NYCOS we have been walking the beat and clapping the rhythm and are getting very good at it. We played a game with the rhythm cards and then a rhythm game. In the rhythm game we were split into 4 groups and a 4 beat rhythm was clapped and we had to work out how many people were needed to show the rhythm in rhythm people.
Have a lovely weekend everyone, albeit wet I think.
Love from P4B and Mrs.Burton

Phonics, fact families and fun in P1a!

What a busy couple of weeks in P1a. We enjoyed a lovely wee break in the middle, but have been learning lots of things…

Last week in phonics we were learning about ee and ea…this was so tricky, as there is no clear rule of when to use each one…we just need to learn them. Mrs Gordon was really impressed with how we did that. This week we had a revision week and did lots of work on remembering the digraphs that we have learnt so far…Mrs Gordon was very impressed with how much we remember…We really like this wee song which has a couple of extra digraphs that we haven’t done yet, but is really fun… especially the bit about R doing maths in the bath! Have a sing along with us!

In numeracy we have been working on the very tricky fact families, which show the links between addition and subtraction. We know that in a fact family the 3 numbers are linked. For example with 5, 3 and 2 we start with 2 addition facts : 3+2=5 and then the switcher 2+3=5, then we look at the subtraction facts (always starting with the largest number), 5-3=2 and 5-2+3. We will be continuing to work on this next week, but if you want to play a wee game at home try this…

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/number-facts/number-fact-families

Mrs Hocknull introduced us to some card games this week which is great for our numeracy, we were doing very well matching pairs.

In French we revised our colours and numbers to 20. Mrs Gordon cannot believe how well we are counting and pronouncing our French, c’est super!

In science with Mrs Begarnie we have been exploring light, which is very exciting…we get to close the curtains and try different things in the dark! Have a look at us exploring!

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a.
