Primary 6B

This week we have explored Wonder in more depth and looked at how Auggie feels when he hears others talking about him. This has provoked a thoughtful and meaningful discussion about how we treat others. This will link into our Assembly next week, where we will explore bullying in more depth.

We have also finished our work on 3D shapes, creating and labelling our own skeleton 3D shapes.

P2/3 and the sparrows

In Literacy this week we have been learning about adjectives (describing words). We started out Big Writing adventure and helped Emily learn about the nocturnal animals that visit her garden. We wrote fantastic sentences using adjectives to describe the animals.

In reading we read ‘The Secret of the Kelpie’ and we discussed how the story of the Kelpies was created, by passing it down through the generations. We are so excited for our trip to The Kelpies next Tuesday!

In Maths this week we continued to work on addition with 3 single digits and we started to learn the 3 times tables. We figured out that we already knew lots of them! We found some cool songs to help us to learn them.

On Thursday, we joined P2 to practise our balance and mindfulness, completing a Moana themed yoga workout in the hall. Miss Prince was very impressed with our concentration and balance!

We discovered that birds are living outside our classroom window. We did some research and found out that they are called sparrows. CC found out that they don’t like loud noises so we made a sign to remind people to be quiet. We also made bird feeders out of string and cheerios to encourage the sparrows to visit us! We’ll keep you posted on how this goes next week.

We are growing in confidence during our show and tell sessions, using a clear voice and making eye contact with the audience.

DG was our star of the week for improvement in his pencil control, super work!

Love P2/3, Miss Prince and the sparrows x

Week Commencing 6th November 2017

On Monday we learned our new spelling sounds and practiced them by completing various activities at our “active” spelling stations. In Maths we finished off our work on symmetry by cutting out and folding shapes to find out if the shape was symmetrical.  In the afternoon we completed our board games all about “Maui” by making up question cards and writing a set of rules on how to play the different games.

We have also been learning about nouns, verbs and adjectives during literacy time. They have been self-assessing their writing to ensure that they try to include many different adjectives to make their stories more engaging for the reader.

The class had great fun on Wednesday when they created their own mythical creatures after being inspired by the story The Secret of the Kelpies. The class were so enthusiastic about their creations they have asked to write their own imaginative stories based on their creatures.

On Thursday the class discussed the importance of Remembrance Day and the significance of the poppy. They also explored the poem The Inquisitive Child and had some super ideas as to the meaning behind this poem.

On Friday we work hard to develop our mental maths strategies by completing our “BIG Maths” challenge.

Primary 2B

We  started the week with a visit from Mrs.Koduri and Sahasra coming to talk to the Primary 2’s about Hinduism. The children found it very interesting and asked lots of valid questions that they had already prepared.

We have now given out the parts for the Nativity which caused great excitement and have started to practice in the hall. The children are doing really well with the singing.

The children wrote brilliant descriptions of their imaginary dinosaurs, as well as drawing pictures of them. This was in connection with the class novel “Christmasaurus”. We are waiting for our dinosaur to hatch!!

For our Scottish book study we are looking at the “Katie Morag” stories, as well as setting etc. The children enjoyed drawing maps of “The Isle of Struay”.

Primary 6 worked with  Primary 2B on common French vocabulary and the children really learnt a lot and could say what their names were in French.

We did Cosmic yoga with P2/3 using the theme of the film “Moana” and really enjoyed it, concentrating very hard.

Wonderful Writing

This week we all found out our parts for the Nativity. The room was full of cheers and excitement. It was a very special moment and we are all taking our roles very seriously! P2A have been singing their hearts out this week.

Miss Mudd was blown away by our fantastic writing this week. We wrote a diary entry pretending to be Sophie from the BFG. We looked at examples of other diaries and Miss Mudd showed us a WAGOLL (What A Good One Looks Like). We came up with a great word bank and did lots of discussion about our feelings. Mr Wells and Miss Baillie couldn’t believe that Primary 2 had written the pieces we showed them. They had used such fantastic description and so many wow words. Miss Mudd was SO proud. We then watched some of the original film version of the BFG and compared this to the book.

In Phonics we have been focusing on sentence writing this week. We have been using our digraphs in sentences and sounding out with our phoneme fingers.

In Maths we have continued our work on addition. Miss Mudd introduced the problem solving mats and we had to work in groups to convince the rest of the class we had the right answer. We had to show the strategy we used, draw a picture, use concrete materials and write a number story. We were also learning how to add on 9 this week. We had to add on ten then take one away. We then applied this strategy to bigger numbers and used a number line to help us.

We started our new topic of Katie Morag. We explored the Isle of Struay which is based on the Isle of Coll. Katie took us on an interactive tour of the island. We then created our own maps of the island and used Lego to build some of the key landmarks.

On Friday we learnt about Remembrance day and we did our minute silence. We wrote acrostic poems to tell people why we wear poppies and we watched the story of the poppy. We showed respect to the soldiers who fought for us to keep us safe.

Have a lovely weeked

Weighing and Wee Granny’s Magic Bag (P1A)

This week we have been learning to use + and =. Miss Harrison hid lots of + and = symbols around the classroom and we went on a maths hunt to find them! We have been using these symbols in our adding sums. We have also been learning how to add 1 and 2 more.

On Thursday, we were learning to describe and compare weights. We drew pictures of heavy and light objects, compared weights, sorted items according to their weight and weighed items using scales and cubes. We had to weigh some of our shoes and one shoe weighed 77 cubes!

This week our new sounds were ‘g’ and ‘f’. We played ‘g’ bingo, made our own gloves, made ‘f’ fish and made ‘f’ words on our magnetic boards. We have been working hard with writing our letters, using our sounds to make words and some of us are even writing a sentence! We have also been using our sounds to read words in our reading books.

This week we started our Scottish Book Focus. We listened to the story, ‘Wee Granny’s Magic Bag’. We really liked when Granny pulled out the deckchairs, the telephone box, the oven and Bert the donkey from her magic bag. On Tuesday morning as part of our ‘Big Write’, we talked about and drew or wrote our favourite parts. We made recipes for cupcakes in our role play area (just like Granny’s), painted big cupcakes, drew pictures of the things that came out of Granny’s bag and used pictures and props to retell the story.

Thank you for reading our blog post. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

P1A and Miss Harrison 🙂

P5

Last week, we were very busy practising for our assembly and making props! For Halloween, we made Frankenstein and Mummy styled egg boxes.  We created dangly monsters.  We did a Big Maths Beat that Challenge. We worked on alliteration for Halloween words.

This week, we have completed a bird survey outside in the school grounds. We designed a bird feeder.  We worked with a partner to create bird leaflets/fact files on the netbooks.

P5 have made rockets with Mrs Tulloch. P5b have tested their rockets. Lewis’ rocket went the furthest- from the P1 door onto the pitch! P5a are going to do their investigation next week.

We took up the challenge of the Sumdog competition. We had Finlay complete all his questions- Fabulous! We have been finding out about 3D shapes in and around school. P5a have made some 3D shapes from resources outside in the environment. We have looked the nets of 3D shapes.

We have continued working on alliteration and did some work on The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark linking in with Bonfire night. We welcomed our parents into our class to see our writing.

P5 organised the collection of the shoe boxes. We had several  parents help us to sort them out. On Thursday, 125 boxes were sent on their way! A BIG THANK YOU to everyone!

P5 🙂

P7b Achievements

I am delighted to share two P7b sporting achievements today. Firstly, Danielle recently competed in an ice skating competition at Murrayfield Ice Rink and managed to come in 3rd place winning bronze. Well done Danielle, what a fantastic achievement. Keep practising and I’m sure there will be some silvers and golds on the way!

Secondly, a huge well done to Sam who last night was selected to be ball boy at Andy Murray’s Live Event at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow. Sam was positioned at the net during Murray’s match versus Roger Federer and was lucky enough to get both of their autographs at the end. You’ll also see from the picture below that Sam is wearing Federer’s headband that he wore for the match. If you want to watch the highlights from this and see him in action, you can find them here:

P5 Refugees Assembly

Thank you so much to P5 and Mrs Law for their excellent assembly which shared the plight of refugees around the world. It made us all think how lucky we are to live in peace and harmony in our country.

Numeracy

Last week in Numeracy and Mathematics we came to a conclusion with our work using decimal numbers. Whilst establishing the link to both fractions and percentages, we have been adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimal numbers through the use of written methods. We understand that ahead of our transition to S1 it is of great importance to show our working and verbalise the strategies we are using when completing written calculations or developing our mental arithmetic. Even if we don’t find the correct answer, we will gain credit for the steps we have taken in getting there. As it was Halloween on Tuesday, our problem solving this week was titled ‘Murder at the Movies’. We had to apply our knowledge of decimals in order to cross off names from the suspects list before eventually finding the culprit. Next week we will be further developing our knowledge of decimal numbers as we move on to look at money. This will be good practise ahead of our Christmas Fayre enterprise work where we will need to use money to purchase resources, work to a budget and hopefully calculate eventual gross and net profits.

Literacy

In spelling we are continuing to challenge ourselves with tricky spelling rules and patterns. Mr. Logan has been thoroughly impressed with the scores in our spelling test each Friday and the ability to demonstrate our understanding of these words’ definitions in our ambitious, up-leveled sentences. On Thursday we used mind maps as a tool for planning our Poppy Factory visit recount writing. This allowed us to note down key points and phrases that would aid the flow and structure of our work. These pieces of writing will be continued next week where we also have our Big Write event to look forward to. In this time we will be writing some rainforest tanka poems. Our guided reading timetables have been altered as we move onto new group novels, and we ended this week by entering discussion groups on Yammer. This online space within Glow was used to answer a range comprehension type questions posed by Mr. Logan and discuss our novels in greater detail with our peers.

Health and Wellbeing

In P.E, we have been practising ahead of our Linlithgow cluster Sportshall Athletics festival next Wednesday. The events we have been working on are speed bounce, chest push, standing long jump, vertical jump, javelin and relay races. If we are successful at the cluster event, we will move forward to West Lothian finals and Mr. Logan believes we have every chance of doing so judging by the level of performance he has seen. The Sports Committee had their second meeting of the session on Friday and pupils worked hard to design a new logo that will be displayed on any Sports Committee work around school. We will be voting for our winning design at our next meeting in December. Finally, Sam had some fantastic news to share this week as he has been selected to ball boy in Andy Murray’s Live Event next Tuesday. Murray will be facing Roger Federer amongst other matches at the SSE Hydro and you can tune in on Eurosport from 7pm for a chance to see Sam in action!
