Stickman writing, Numicon addition and Nativity practice in P1B

In Literacy this week we learned the sound j and v:

j – down the Jack in a box’s body, curl. Dot for the head.

v – down the vulture’s wing, up the wing

J is quite tricky because we can get it muddled with i and form the curl the wrong way. Remember that the j has a tail that goes past the line. We also learned two new common words – put, was.

On Wednesday we did a super piece of writing on the story Stickman. We imagined what we would use Stickman for if we found him. We are getting very good at sounding out words and remembering to use a finger space after each word. Here is some of our super writing:

In Numeracy we worked on addition pairs to 6, 7 and 8. We are getting very good at forming numbers the correct way round and writing addition sums correctly. We also worked on addition using numicon:

Admin for next week (it’s a busy one!):

If you haven’t already got your tickets for the Nativity, please return the ticket letter slip on Monday, dojo me if you need another ticket letter.

Costumes in a labelled bag to be handed in by Tuesday – please refer to the Nativity information Sheet – not all children need to hand costume in.  All children know their parts.

Tuesday – Nativity rehearsal at the church. We will be leaving as soon as we have done the register and ordered lunches. Please send children with a waterproof coat and a small bag to carry their water and a snack in. We will be back in time for school lunches so no need for a packed lunch.

Thursday – Christmas jumper day and Christmas lunch

Friday – Christmas Fayre 9am-12

Happy weekend (26 sleeps until Christmas!),

P1a’s weekly news

This week in literacy we have been learning 3 ways to make the c sound (c, k and ck). We did really well working out which was which and we realised that ck will mostly be at the end of words. We found the formation of the k quite tricky as we use the version with a curl on the k. Our new tricky words were he and me and we often see those in our reading books.

In numeracy we continued our number bonds for 4, 5 and 6. We were working out all the different ways we can make 4, 5 and 6. We found a pattern, to know how many ways you add 1 to the number, eg to make 4 there are 5 ways, to make 5 there are 6 ways. We also enjoyed using the switcher to make the numbers eg 4+2=6 and 2+4=6. We were also exploring different ways to show addition using chalk, numicon and playdough.

Our Nativity is coming along very nicely and the children have been working very hard on this. We have assigned all parts today, and don’t think we need anything from home for the P1 costumes. We have also been making our crafts for the Christmas Fayre, both of these things are secret for now…

In French we learnt more colours – now we know bleu, blanc, rouge, vert, orange, violet and jaune.

We had great fun this morning during our BEAR (Be excited about reading) event. We closed the blinds, switched off the lights and read our books using torches.

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a.

Lots of new sounds, number facts and a BEAR event in P1B

In Phonics this week we have been very busy – we leaned l, c, k and ck!

l – stretch down the long leg

c – curl around the caterpillar

k – down the kangaroo’s body, tail and leg

We learned that c, c and ck all make the same sound. It can be tricky to remember when to use each one. We learned some words that begin with c and k and we know that ck usually comes at the end of a word. Mrs Bell was very impressed with how quickly we picked this up!

We have almost finished our handwriting booklets, each of us has a few pages left to complete so these have been sent home today to work through at home at your own pace – these do not need to be returned to school. Please don’t do the k page – it’s not the correct formation and will confuse us!

In Numeracy we learned addition facts to 4, 5 and 6. It helps us with our mental maths if we know these off by heart. For example, 3 and 3 make 6. There are lots of fun ways to practise these at home, you could shout out a number and ask us to clap or jump the number pair to make the amount. For example when practising number facts to 4 – you shout out 1, we clap or jump 3 times.

In French we have been learning colours. We learned the colours of the French flag and enjoyed playing games around the classroom to practise these. Here’s a simple song to help us to learn the colours:

We have been busy little elves making our Christmas crafts for the Christmas Fayre this week… we can’t tell you any more than that just now, it’s a surprise!

We had a lovely time at our BEAR event today, reading our favourite books by torchlight:

Some photos of free play fun:

We read one of MS’s favourite stories this week, she very confidently told us (and Mrs Hocknull) about each of the animals:

LR was delighted to win the ‘guess the name of the doggy’ competition! Meet Marshmellow:

Happy weekend!

Stick Man, hibernation and vowels in P1a

Another busy week has passed in P1a. We are loving our hedgehog focus and this week investigated hibernation further. We learnt about all different types of animals that hibernate, and where they hibernate. Ask us what we know, you will be impressed…

We also made hibernation puppets and used them to act out animals going into hibernation and then waking up in the spring. Some of us them became hedgehogs, snakes and frogs and pretended to hibernate.

Mrs Hocknall read Stick Man to the infant department the other day and it is going to be the focus for our corridor displays and play area. We had a lot of fun making our own stick men yesterday and using the Chatterpix app to take a photo of them and make them talk! What fun!

In literacy this week we learnt about the 5 vowels (a,e,i,o,u). We learnt that we need these sounds in all words and they will mostly appear in the middle. We played vowel bingo. It was really tricky to always hear the middle sound, but we are trying really hard. We really loved this song and may like to practise it at home to help us remember them.

We also learnt 2 new common words, he and me. We are now able to find lots of our common words in our reading books.

This week we wrote our first sentence… it was really exciting. Mrs Gordon was really impressed with how many of us remembered the 3 important things for a sentence – a capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop.

In numeracy we continued our addition journey and started to investigate the different ways to make 2, 3 and 4. We are managing very well with the language and symbols of addition. We also continued looking at time by looking at the seasons, and what things happen in certain seasons.

In French Camembear taught us bleu, blanc and rouge just like the French flag the tricolor. We also learnt violet since we were wearing purple today for our dress down.

Happy weekend from Mrs Gordon and P1a

Vowels, hibernation and Nativity practice in P1B

In Literacy this week we learned about the vowel sounds – a e i o u. Here is a catchy song that helps us to remember them…

We can find the vowel sound in a word and we can select the correct vowel to make a word. We also know that if you change the vowel sound sometimes it makes a new word – dug, dig, dog. This is something you could play about with at home with magnetic letters or the sound cards in the homework bags.

In Writing we learned how to write a sentence. We know that a sentence needs 3 very important things – a capital letter at the beginning, finger spaces and a full stop. Mrs Bell was very impressed as we all managed to write a sentence in our jotters. We need to remember to use a finger space after every word but we will be getting lots of opportunities to practise this.

In Numeracy we continued our work on addition – number bonds to make 2, 3 and 4. We are getting more confident at writing sums using the + sign and the = sign. We love this adding with a pirate song:

This week we finished our hedgehogs (Mrs Bell is very relieved these got home in one piece!) We also learned about hibernation – which animals hibernate and where they hibernate. Ask us and see if we remember any. Ethan taught Mrs Bell that queen bees hibernate underground. Never too old to learn something new! We also went outside and investigated good places to hibernate in the school grounds. We decided up a tree would be your best option as everywhere else would be too noisy!

Our Nativity Practices are now in full swing. As we are P1s we don’t have speaking parts (it will be our turn in P2). We are learning the songs and we’re looking forward to learning the dance moves… this year’s Nativity has a slight Strictly Come Dancing feel to it!

Next Wednesday afternoon we are going to begin making our Christmas crafts to sell at the Christmas Fayre. Any willing helpers are always welcome 🙂

Have a lovely weekend,

Love P1b and Mrs Bell x

P1a’s Weekly News

This week in P1a we have really enjoyed sharing strategies within our Number Talks. We love using the hand signals to show our thinking time, number of strategies and when we agree. In numeracy we have been learning about addition and how it means how many altogether. We also used our addition knowledge to add one more without going back to zero and counting everything again. Mrs Gordon was very impressed when we managed to share some addition strategies during our number talks on Wednesday when we had some parents join us for our open morning. Lots of us have really enjoyed learning how to write number sentences using + and = symbols, and adding together playdough apples, cuddly toys and numicon.

On Wednesday afternoon the second group of children went to the firepit with Mrs Malcolm from the nursery. They loved learning about the fire and toasting marshmallows…Mrs Malcolm said we may make hot chocolate on the fire next…

We continued our hedgehog focus by singing a hedgehog song and learning facts about them. Mrs Gordon even learnt that their babies are called hoglets (she didn’t know that fact before). We also started to make our own clay hedgehogs which we will get to take home. We found it was much harder to mould clay than it is playdough.

In literacy we learnt 2 more new sounds u and b. We are finding b very tricky and keep mixing it up with d. We need to keep practising so we can tell them apart. We also learnt 2 new tricky words the and to. Each tricky word has an action to help us try and remember them. We also used our knowledge of sounds so far to write about fireworks. We drew a picture of fireworks with oil pastels and then wrote what they look like and sound like. Next week we are going to try and write our first sentence…very exciting!

Happy weekend from Mrs Gordon and P1a

Photographs, fireworks and hoglets in P1B!

Lots of smart children and beautiful hairstyles in P1B this week, we can’t wait to see our school photos! On Thursday we had some visitors from Norway who came to see what we get up to at Springfield Primary – they loved seeing how kind and respectful we are  towards each other and we enjoyed showing them how we learn.

In Phonics we have been learning the sounds u and b:

u – down and under the umbrella, up to the top then draw the puddle

b – down the laces to the heel, around the toes

Some of us are forgetting to go back up and around the toes when we make b, this is important or else it looks like the number 6.

We also learned some more common words – the, to. Common words are words that we can’t sound out, we just need to learn them by sight (sometimes they are called sight words for this reason).

In Numeracy we learned about addition using the add sign and the equals sign. We also learned how to add 1 more. We loved sharing our learning with you at our Number Talks open morning!

On Wednesday we did some fantastic writing about what fireworks look and sound like. We are getting very good at having a go at writing words by sounding them out. MS wrote the words red, blue and peach all by herself, well done!

In Art we used clay and sticks to make our own hoglets (baby hedgehogs), we’re all desperate to bring these home to show you, we just need to glue on the  eyes and they will be ready!

During Free play (and at home it seems!) we are enjoying writing our own books and reading them to the class. BP wrote a super book about a hedgehog!

Next week we are focusing on vowels as we have learned them all now, so there won’t be new sounds in the homework bags, just a couple of new common words.

Have a great weekend!

P1a Halloween, hedgehogs and hot marshmallows…

We had a great week in Primary 1. We enjoyed our Halloween activities. In class we read some Halloween stories and even did some Halloween maths. We had a lovely Halloween party on Thursday with some stories, dancing and games. We especially loved wrapping up the mummies…Today we played a pumpkin drive game with our P3 friends, we had to work as a team to draw a pumpkin when we rolled the dice, eg a 2 was the eyes.

In numeracy we started our new topic… addition. We learnt that addition is how many altogether. We had lots of opportunities to add things together and share strategies…including adding real people and teddies…Maybe we could practice at home with some objects around the house. In time we learnt the months of the year. It was really fun jumping up when Mrs Gordon said our birthday month. We are now trying hard to remember the order of the months.

In literacy we learnt the sounds g and f and the tricky word I. Tricky or common words are words that we can’t sound out, we just need to learn them. For each word we have an action.

This week some of us were lucky enough to go to the nursery garden and learn about using the firepit. We had yummy marshmallows…The others will go next week.

We started talking about hedgehogs and hibernation. Mrs Gordon was very impressed with how much we already know. We also made some amazing hedgehogs with the leaves we gathered last week.

Happy weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a

Halloween in P1B!

What a fun week we’ve had in P1b!

In Phonics we learned the sounds f and g.

f – down the stem of the flower and draw the leaves

g – around the girl’s face, down her hair and give her a curl

These are both quite tricky to form – we need to remember to give the f a straight line for the stem or else it looks like a ‘s’ with leaves! For g we need to remember to sit the girl’s face on the line and draw her hair going down below the line.

We also had a go at building CVC words with the sounds we have learned so far. We were super confident with this!

In Numeracy we began learning about addition – adding together two groups to find out how many altogether. We can do this by counting all of the objects. Another strategy we can use is to keep the first number in our head and count on, eg 5 + 3  Keep 5 in your head and count on 3 more, 6 7

In Maths we have been learning more about time – Months of the Year. We enjoyed singing the Months of the year song and jumping up on our birthday month. You could try this at home!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5enDRrWyXaw

We really impressed Mrs Bell with our work on ordering the months of the year:

On Thursday afternoon we had a spooktastic time at the Halloween Party. We enjoyed listening to Mr Wells read a spooky story, dancing and playing the toilet roll mummy game!

Take a look at FD’s fantastic writing that she did at home and brought in to show me:

Thank you to Maili for helping us to build our Fairyland Castle:

And well done to AK who is teaching us Polish, this week we learned how to say hello:

Next week we will be reading more hedgehog stories and having a go at making our own hedgehogs out of clay. Any parent helpers available to help with this please let me know 🙂

Have a lovely weekend,

Love P1B and Mrs Bell x

P1a’s autumn extravaganza

We were very excited to return to school this week and bring with us signs of autumn that we had found. We put them all in a tuff tray so that we could play with them. P made a magnificent sculpture with her dad, we made this our centrepiece. We also went our gathering leaves and looking for signs of autumn so that we can make some art next week. This term our IDL/book focus (alongside our continuing Fairyland focus) will be hedgehogs. We will be exploring hibernation and stories about hedgehogs, we will also attempt to make some hedgehogs…

In literacy we learnt 2 new sounds d and o. We are finding d quite tricky to write, but we do find it funny to remember the rhyme for writing it… round the dinosaur’s bottom up his tall neck and down to his toes. We are going to keep practising lots.

In maths this week we focused on more and less, then one more and one less. The language of mathematics can be tricky and some people were finding it difficult to remember which was more and which was less. Again lots of practise at home please eg what is 1 more than 6, what is 1 less than 9 etc. We also looked at a new topic – time. Our focus was on knowing the days of the week, being able to order and recognise them. Most of us were managing this very well and we love to sing our days of the week song each day, ask us to sing it to you!

In French we learnt please and thank you. S’il te plait and merci. Everyone managed to ask Camembear for an object and thank him politely.

In IDL we learnt about the components of a castle ready to make our own one in the classroom next week. We then drew our designs and had great fun drawing dungeons, turrets, portcullis and moats…we especially loved talking about the baddies as you can see from our comments here…

Don’t forget to have a look at our learners journey online as Mrs Gordon has uploaded photos and comments to show our progress, of which we are very proud!

Bon weekend, Mrs Gordon and P1a
