P5A Week ending 18.5.18

On Wednesday , “National Numeracy Day”, we had a visit from Mr Turtle who is a structural engineer. He did a lesson on structures and how to make them stronger after his daughter had told him about our visit to the Queensferry Crossing Bridge. This activity involved measuring to the nearest millimetre. We had to be very accurate in our measuring. We used a strip of paper, which represented an I beam, and measured, cut and glued balsa wood to the top and bottom on both sides. We predicted and then tested what would happen when you added weights to the middle. It took 100gm before the paper bent at both ends. So next we added strips of balsa to either end to make it stronger and then retested. This time it took 200gm and it bent in the middle. So we added balsa to the middle and retested. This time it took 400gm. This time it bent between the wood strengthening it so we glued wood between the middle and end. It took 700gm. Then we all tested our own and Finlay, Angus and Daniel won, as their I beam was able to take 1500gm. It was a great afternoon putting real measuring into practise. Thank you very much Mr Turtle.

Testing our I beams.

In maths we are learning about capacity and volume and in number we have completed our fractions focus and started work on decimal. We are looking at the relationship between them.

In literacy we have been learning about the difference between possessive s and plural s. In pairs we worked to find out the difference and now it is much clearer. We will continue with this on Monday. Within our literacy circle groups we are starting to familiarise ourselves with the different roles and there was super dialogue about the different main characters.

We started the Big Writing Adventure and were looking at what makes a superhero. Now we are using interesting vocabulary to develop our own characters.

Half the class went to the triathlon on Thursday. The pupils were a credit to the school and performed very well at the different sports. The weather was perfect and it ended with a potted highland games. Mr Logan is going to post the photographs taken.

The rest of the class continued with Scratch and helped Mr Ritchie’s class. They  designed posters for Transition Linlithgow with regard to the use of plastics.

11.5.18 Primary 5A

Hello, we hope everyone had fun over the long weekend.

P5A at the canal basin after our safety talk

This week we went on the canal and learned about how to keep safe on water. It was really interesting and fun. We had turns at saving someone from drowning ( on the boat! ).

In science, we investigated how to make white from the colours of the rainbow. It also gave us an opportunity to make electrical circuits. We rainbow  coloured our discs and then put them onto the motor. When they spun it made white. No one predicted that!

Logan’s birthday and he made white

In maths we continued with fractions, improper and mixed numbers. We will continue this next week and it may involve biscuits!

There was lots of great discussion about our group novels and our discussion directors did very well leading the groups.

We finished our session of basketball with very fast, competitive games . Lots of baskets were scored and there was great passing as well.

Mrs Bain was pleased with our rhythm and percussion playing in music.

For IDL we looked at ordnance survey symbols and features of different Scottish landscapes. We will be painting modern beach scenes next week.

4.5.18 Primary 5A

This week in P5A, we have started our literacy circle activities. We were well prepared and able to take on the different roles. The directors made very good teachers, leading the groups. To help with our reading and research we focused on identifying the main idea.  At writing, having looked at different samples of text we were able to workout where the new paragraphs come. This will help when writing stories.

In number we have continued  to find fractions of amounts and use real life examples. This makes much more sense to us now.  We have been finding perimeters of shapes with Mrs Gordon and doing more number talks. She loves our strategies.

As part of our expressive arts and IDL we are comparing a classical artist, Edwin Landseer’s ” The Monarch of the Glen”  (1851), with modern Scottish artist, Scott Naismith’s different beach scenes.

We painted our own version of Scottish mountains from photographs and then positioned a stag in the foreground. Next week we will use pastels to create beach scenes.

At science we discussed light and shadows and whether materials were translucent, opaque or transparent. We took part in different activities which involved making shadows smaller, larger and from different angles. We revisited how a solar eclipse occurs from our Space topic in term 1.

For IDL we studied the different landscapes in Scotland and also studied map symbols. We looked at the  universal colour code and then designed our own ordnance  survey symbols.

What great matches we had at basketball this week. The passing was super and there was great dribbling and shooting. Mr Logan said the class worked really well during his football lesson.

27.4.18 5A Blog

We started our literacy circle this week and everybody was very pleased with their choice of book. There was lots of discussion about the cover, illustrations and our initial feelings about the story line and characters. Mrs Tulloch had a job trying to get us to stop talking. Everyone has a role for next week and we look forward to listening to how everyone in the group manages their literacy circle task.

We were using dictionaries to help when up leveling our writing. For comprehension, we focused on reading for information and this should help us prepare for our class talks.

In maths, we focused on equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions. This was quite tricky and  we need to practise the method we have been using in class. Next week we will be finding fractions of an amount.  Mrs Gordon was pleased with our work on area and we will continue with perimeter.

We started our new IDL geography trail about Scotland and used a map to show: what we know, what we would like to find out and how we are going to do it.

At PE, we practiced our drills at basketball and had some very fast games. Lots of double dribbles though!

Mrs Bain gave us instruments and we were practicing keeping different rhythms.

Mr Logan continued with our internet safety and we completed our posters.

We continued with Scratch and have been showing our work, cartoon and movies to  rest of the class. They are fab.

Week ending 13.4.18 5A

Hello and welcome back to everyone after our Easter holidays.

This week,  in number  we have started division sums by 1 digit. It has been quite challenging but with practice we are making good progress.

During our reading,  we talked about  literacy circle and chose from a wide  selection of novels.  We should be ready to start this in 2 weeks.

We copied our Babbington Plots onto aged paper ( which smelt of coffee). We wrote thank you letters to Mr Woodhouse, Elaine at the Queensferry Crossing and the Linlithgow Primary Palace guides.

In science we have started our new topic of light and had great fun investigating light sources and reflectors under cover. We took photos but all you can see is us under the sheets!

At last we got into the PE hall and were able to shoot at basketball – Harlem Globe Trotters look out.

We had music with Mrs Bain this week twice and really enjoyed the different activities.

Primary 5A 22.3.18

Last week we visited Linlithgow Palace and were shown round by Linlithgow Primary Palace guide who were really interesting. We also had time to sketch different parts of the Palace.

Before our Bridges visit on Monday, Hector Woodhouse came and spoke to us about his work on the Forth Road Bridge almost 60 years ago. It was fascinating and we could have asked him questions for ages after the bell. The talk really helped prepare us for our visit to the new Queensferry Crossing. Also in preparation, we  made paper bridges. Arran and Shaymaa’s bridge managed to carry 600+ bricks.

Walking the Forth Road Bridge
Learning about the safety

We really enjoyed our visit and learned about the different kinds and bridges, their construction and safety.

Have a lovely Easter holiday!

Embroidery Group

Some pupils from primary 5 -7 are working with ladies from the Embroiders’ Guild to make ” The World ‘s Longest Embroidery for Schools..”

We had to come up with ideas for 8 different panels and then we sketched them out.

We chose :

Linlithgow Palace and Loch

The Burgh Beautiful flower train at the station

The High Street and well

Linlithgow Rose Football  Club

The Lion King

Inclusion at Springfield

The Canal

Sports at Springfield

School badge

St Michael’s Church

9.3.18 5A

Well done for all the great activities you did during our snow days.

This week we learned how to multiply by 2 digits to 2 digits. We are continuing to work on our multiplication tables and we were getting quite fast playing Buzz. We also started work on analogue time, minutes past, minutes to , am and pm. We found digital time easier.

Although we missed the RBS coming in to work with us for our “Party Plan”, next week we are going ahead with it and some P7 pupils will be helping us.

Fairtrade Fortnight

We were learning more about Fairtrade and we completed our footballs for the competition at Linlithgow primary tonight. We played the banana game in class.

For science we continued investigating separation this time by evaporation. We separated a solution of salt water by heating the solution over a candle. There were great salt crystals at the end.

For literacy we completes our grids for comparing life in the Palace with life as a lowlander and we are now ready for our visit to Linlithgow Palace on Monday morning. We drew pencil portraits of the important people in Mary Queen of Scots Life.

Science site

Hi folks this is a really good site for topical science which we use in school.

Kind regards

P5A Work from home

Please either save your work to dojo, print it out or email me it and we can share all your activities in class. I look forward to seeing the most imaginative snow structure. Let’s see who has the most imaginative work. I’m sure we could do our spelling in the snow!

jean.tulloch@westlothian.org.uk

Unfortunately we will miss Book Day too. If you had already made a costume please take a photo dressed up and we can do a competition with your photos in class.

In preparation for our bridges visit, do have a look at different types of bridges as we will be making them in class.

We have been discussing the importance of science vocabulary so if you would like to make a poster about forces , separation, bridge building etc that would be great.

Enjoy the time off but please keep practicing your multiplication tables!
